The BBC HD advert was on television for the first time last night. It has a very small mention (in text) of Freesat at the end. Advert was captured and placed on youtube here.
News reports are starting to appear on all channels following the press conference today. The best explained example is from BBC’s own BBC News channel. You can see the video on youtube here.

The new Freesat website is predictably information-free in many ways. It doesn’t explain the difference between “HD Ready” and “Full HD” or “1080 HD” for those who don’t understand and will be likely to be seduced by “bargin HD ready sets in high street shops.
And, most of al it doesn’t say anything about the sound system. Please tell me it is going to be Dolby Digital!

The BBC website is calling it Free-to-View – but I thought FTV required a card… Shame the BBC can’t seem to get the terminology right about their own venture!

Saw the BBC news.
Very much undersold Freesat in my opinion and even finished with a quote (very roughly paraphrased from memory “Sky questions whether or not the BBC should be spending license payers money on yet another service”.
What! Talk about undersell your own service.
No big announcements, no big sell, no launch party or fireworks, just a very quiet mention in a corner of the news..
Where was the bit about there isn’t enough room to broadcast more than a couple of HD channels on Freeview so we needed Freesat in order to go HD?
Where was the big sell vs Sky?
Where was the comparison that the service offers HD for free whereas Sky’s a pay only service?
Where was the Freesat is the future of digital tv quote?
Why no party and excited people?
Anyone would think the BBC don’t want it to succeed!

Sound is Dolby Digital but whether it’s 5.1 or not will depend on the programme transmitter. 1080i/7120p is the highest available HD transmitted definition so whether a TV is HD ready or FULL HD will not make much difference to a freesat picture

It seems crazy to be paying about 250 pounds just to get a few extra channels which look awful and two hd channels, one of which only broadcasts for a few hours a day and the other hasn’t even come out yet!

Yeah. it has been a quiet start. But, I do suspect it will catch on pretty quickly and the UK can finally be educated about satellite TV and realise Satellite TV and Sky are not the same thing at all! In fact Sky are restricting broadcasters by their contracts and entrapment into a ‘Sky only’ audience. Good luck BSkyB, you might need it in a few years.
I’ts one of the best things to happend to broadcasting for ages, freedom.

No mention on the 10 o’clock news. Softest launch of anything I’ve ever come acrosss! Do you think that Sky have slipped them a fiver to keep it a bit quiet?

No point coming out all guns blazing, they need to wait for the whole Freesat thing to bed in and iron out the faults. Then they can really start the campaign push. If people are disappointed early on then they will tell their friends etc etc. That could be very damaging for the brand. Word of mouth is very powerful.

Yeah . . I think BSkyB have survived on the beer swilling, couch potatoe, unemployed, council tennent paying for subscription on benefits. The mentality and quality of their programming to match . . .
Is that a bit harsh? . . I’m not feeling guilty . .
