Join Freesat

Jul 24 2008

According to Wotsat (What Satellite & Digital TV), an announcement of when channel FIVE will join Freesat is ‘imminent’.

Emma Scott, Freesat MD, told Wotsat that channel Five have settled issues with rights holders and will set a launch date shortly.

“Five are coming on this year and we are hoping for an announcement shortly. They would have liked to have been there at the launch, but it was not possible because of rights issues.”

Fiver and Five US are still not expected to be available on Freesat anytime soon. We were led to beleive this was due to available space on the tighter Astra2D beam, but Wotsat suggest its due to new terms with programme makers.

Thank you Wotsat for the information.

if Five HD appears on Freesat, does this mean that it will also be available on Sky HD. ITV HD is currently not available on Sky HD.

What’s happened to this “imminent” announcement from FIVE then? More than 3 months later and still nothing. Come on FIVE, get a move on, the year is nearly over!

Well, its now May 09, we have just had Freesat installed and still no sign of Channel 5 HD, only BBD and ITV via the red button. What’s the point of giving false information and us all sitting in anticipation of something that isn’t going to be ‘imminent’. Has Channel 5 made up its mind yet if its going to be this year? Where is the competition with SKY Free to Air if UK channel providers can’t get their act together.

Not sure any information was given to suggest that Five HD would be coming? Plus we have since dropped in to recession, many broadcasters are holding back on investment into new technology.

Well yes that could be a good reason for not rolling it out. However, I do know that there is a 3 month waiting list for SKY customers to change to HD from SD, so that highlights that the customers are still there willing to pay for the extra quality. Do yo have any idea when Channel 4 or Channel 5 might transmit in HD via Freesat?
