Copied this from a forum i found.
--------------------
My email to five regarding them and freesat and the reply i received, seems like they have no plans for freesat.
Hi, I have two simple question, I hope you can answer and im sure your being asked this all the time.

[from me - five]

Will five, five us and five life be launching Free To Air and be available on the BBC/ITV Freesat service from launch?

Will five HD be launching anytime soon and be on Freesat?

[from five - me]

Thank you for your recent enquiry.

The BBC and ITV’s decision to broadcast in the clear from a different satellite is not something that Five can copy. The satellite coverage now used by the BBC can still reach parts of mainland Europe, and the Republic of Ireland. The terms of our copyright licenses effectively prohibit broadcasting outside the United Kingdom. When we acquire broadcast rights for programmes and films, these are specifically for the UK territory.

This is why Five pays BSkyB to encrypt and broadcast our channel via digital satellite.

To renegotiate our copyright licenses to include non-UK territories, thus allowing us to broadcast in the clear, would involve a significant increase in costs; as we do not sell advertising in non-UK territories, it would not make commercial sense and we would end up investing in broadcast rights that we could not generate revenue from.

We are aware that both BBC and ITV have been broadcasting unencrypted, although this has not been without difficulties; there have reportedly been legal complications arising from such an arrangement. Regardless of this, it is not necessarily fair to compare either BBC or ITV with other UK networks, as they produce and own most of their programmes; also, their size and perceived corporate strength will affect their ability to negotiate for what they want.

There are no current plans to launch a high definition service. However, we shall log your interest in seeing such a service in our Viewer Enquiries Report for the attention of all relevant personnel here at Five.

If there is anything further we can help you with, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you for your interest in Five.

Yours sincerely

Margaret

Hi again
Has anyone got a SAGEM 250gig HDD TV recorder? I bought it to go with my Bush Freesat, but I don't think that you can record onto it via SCART. I've tried a SCART to RF converter, but it doesn't send a signal strong enough for the Sagem to detect it on the channel search. Beware..... I'm just going out to buy an upscaling DVD Reccorder. Have a great Xmas.

I am not to bothered about HD to be honest. People seem to forget Freesat is a FTA service and isn't meant to try to lure people from Sky it is an alternative for people who do not yet have sat-tv. So nobody should be expecting so called premium channels to be joining Freesat , although it would be welcome. I wouldn't waste my money anymore on Sky for their pay channels as the contents on thoses channels are repeated over and over and therefore a complete waste of money

Try the monthly magazine "What Satellite". Should be on sale within the next week or so from the better newsagents.

Five came up on my Goodmans HD with no problems, but then if I flick through channels it tends to lose sound & I have to unplug & replug to get it back; I think these machines have a mind of their own!

p.s.
Does anybody know where you can get a list of the frequencies etc. of the non-freesat stations, as my Bush doesn't search automatically after the full install.
I'm sure that I did it when I first set the box up. Thanks

Hi all
Just discovered this site. Thanks for all the tips (being a newcomer).
Just received CH5 on my Bush HD receiver, but had to do a full install.
Was a bit scary as we are in Southern Spain, and the signal was showing
only 44%. I thought I was going to be in big trouble when the wife got home
to no channels! Picture great by the way, and the Prog Guide works.
I will try disconnecting from themains as suggested, to see if the Auto
Update works.
