  1. Afraid thats the way it is on the Echostar, don’t recall needing around 12 button presses though? Menu/Settings/Tuning/Viewing Mode- freesat/non-freesat. There’s not a lot in non-freesat, Sly News/Titty tv etc and some Asian/African tv. It is a pain having to manually add each Transponder/Frequency right enough, I reckon Echostar’s main thought was to provide a decent PVR with SlingLoaded capabilities, which it does very well IMO.

Any one else had this problem or no a solution?

I would simply contact Echostar via their website(support) and explain. Take it your box is still within its warranty/guarantee period? It could be any number of things- fuse in the plug, a power surge or a power supply problem within the box?

  4. Thanks Roger,

The unit itself is dead as tried the same lead on other things and no problem with that so I contacted Echostar but no reply yet.

However, as I bought through Amazon I contacted them and they have agreed a refund. Unfortunately they don’t have the box in stock so looks like Humax Fox Sat!

  5. Good news on your refund Joe, just a wee word of caution about the Humax Foxsat hdr, the box is coming to the end of its “shelf life”. I have one, but prefer the Echostar personally, its faster and picture quality is better in my opinion. Humax is a good box but their customer service is poor. Good luck

  6. Has anyone else lost ch119 ITV Granada HD? I use a Borders postcode and the past week this channel is “not available”, i’ve turned my Echostar off at the Mains for 30secs and switched back on to no avail. Maybe need to “factory reset”? although i don’t want to lose my Recording Schedule

  7. my box is 60% full and all of a sudden it started not recording anything – it would claim it was recording but nothing was actually recorded.

I went to menu > settings > TV Library settings > Library setup > check for disc errors

it took about 1/2 a hour and there was no errors reported but more importantly since then it has started recording again – cant say if it will work for others but it worked for me.

  8. ITV Player is now available on the Echostar, at channel 903. Just tried it out, and picture quality appears to be quite poor compared to BBC iPlayer.

  9. Hi WolfieB,

You beat me to it, I just did a factory reset & found itv player working, I’m well happy about, there’s life in the old dog yet !

I had heared nothing through the normal channels about this, normally I get notifications from Echostar.
I’m still holding out hope for a g2 box from Echostar or some apps for the app section & like ive said in the past I wouldn’t mind paying for a Slingplayer app for example .

  10. Saw an announcement on myechostar.com about it. Requires software update 123R, though.

Never really used ITV Player all that much – can’t stand watching the same advert over and over again – and shan’t be doing so if what I’ve seen so far is as good as the picture quality is going to get.

  11. Hi WolfieB

Hopefully the picture quality will improve over time, not much can be done about the adverts as they are after all ITV’s bread & butter!
I’m just glad that a decent reciever like this is still being developed and added to by the manufacturer, which is a rare thing these days.

I’ve not had any missing recordings here, my box is setup to do at least 4 progs a day .

  14. A few Maplin stores have a few Echostar HDS600RS available for £149.99.
None of my local Maplins (Shropshire) have any in stock, but have arranged for one to be couriered from another store for £10.00.
Still only £159.00, so a bargain.

  15. Hi Guys,

I noticed that the ITV Player appears to have changed on the Echostar, rebranded ITV logos but I’m not sure if there are any other changes / improvements ! The picture quality was around sd quality but its hard to tell if its improved as the pic quality does change with the program viewed.

Not seen you on here in a while Mark; what product are you installing now with the Echostar being discontinued? Have you tried the graded version yet?

  17. Hi Admin,

I fit Humax (first gen) as I still find these very reliable, Recently I done some dish & setup install where customers have bought bush pvrs & while these are not my first choice, (for £60 more a humax can be had !) I’m not seeing the issues that those boxes were having 18 months or so ago..

I’m not supplying the graded Echostars as a supplier offered me them for £4 less trade than they are sold retail, I’m not prepared to have to offer a years g’tee on a receiver that I made £4 on, its just not the way to stay in business !

I have been keeping a eye on this site, but there hasn’t been much to comment on lately, apart from the delayed freetime services, and at the time I was pretty angry, so I thought I’d hold back from posting because it wouldn’t have been very nice to say the least !
I could of easily promoted this service to my customers to then be made to look like a liar due to the broken promises, thankfully I’m not very trusting of what freesat say, mainly due to the itv player delays & never arriving on some gen 1 equipment.

The gen 1 Humax was discontinued months ago, where are you finding stock, or are you just selling graded units?

Try satbuyer, they have the Echostar graded in stock and might be able to do a trade deal for you!

  19. Hi admin

My supplier had about 8 new ones left last week, so I will have to look for something else, but I hesitate to sell gen 2 untill they are fully functioning.
Ive kept away from graded so far but iff there is little choice then I may have to look into them or just do the dish install and fit and let the customer source their own receiver, its not like i would miss out on any profit on the receiver and I dond mind missing out on receiver g’tee greif.
If the manufacturers and distributors want to cut the independents out of the chain there is little I can do about it but I wont work for nothing providing service on their kit.

Agreed, and that is why so many won’t deal with Humax, as they seem to be bias towards their own in-house retail division.

  21. So the Echostar 600 is being discontinued? Never knew this, had ours almost 1 year now and like it. Hope Echostar will continue to support any problems that may (hopefully not) occur in future. Cheers for the info Mark/Admin

  22. Just found this thread via Google. Was all set to buy one, but was suspicious of the lack of ‘new’ stock availability. So sent an email to Echostar on Friday and just got this reply:

“We have stopped manufacturing of this product but will continue to support it. If you are still interested in purchasing this product you can find it on the Amazon Marketplace and from one of our distributors – Turbosat
    (01795 429666).
There isn’t a replacement product imminent but we do have an alternative product that might be of interest; a Freeview DVR…”

So, I won’t be buying one after all. Not quite sure what to get instead. The Humax boxes don’t seem to be very reliable, looking at punter reviews.

  23. I am considering buying the Echostar HDS-600RS, however am concerned now discontinued.

If so, does this mean that there will be no further firmware updates or future additions to it’s services? (for example how it recently received ITVplayer)

  24. I have an EchoStar HDS-600RS for the past year and a half and it replaced a Humax Foxsat that I found too buggy at the time. I hope that EchoStar produce a Freetime box soon as I would definitely stick with EchoStar without hesitation. It has been the best box I have had.

I contacted EchoStar with regards to future firmware updates, and this is their reply:

Currently we do not plan a new release of software for the device but this might change depending on what is needed

  26. Echostar and Freesat are still trying to resolve differences after Freesat wouldn’t allow Echostar to launch the same ‘slim’ version PVR as they did on Freeview. It was at a time when Freesat were stopping the G1 units and having manufacturers sign up to the G1 spec to ensure consistency across the range. Echostar have considered a freetime unit but with moving most of their facilities away from the UK, maybe they no longer see a financial advantage to doing so. We hope they change their mind and can launch a new product to take on Humax.

  27. Big Warning About 124R Update

    Echostar state – ITV on demand will no longer work – { which may explain why they have not made it public }

    Manual Software Update to 124R

You can manually update the HDS-600RS by following the steps below:

    Copy the update file 124R_usb_download.str { 16 MB’s }

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/i9cqz9xvrw5cbm7/124R_usb_download.str

    to an empty USB memory stick. { formatted to FAT32 }

Insert the USB memory stick into either the front or rear USB ports –

The screen will display a message confirming that the USB memory stick has been detected and shows the version number of the software update.

The HDS-600RS will reset and the front panel then displays “Loading…” followed by “Please wait”.

The updating process may take up to 5 minutes. When it is complete, the HDS-600RS will automatically restart.

Now as to what problems it solves I am not sure but its worth a gamble as I doubt there will be a new update any time this year.

  29. Hello there, I have a Echostar HDS 600RS which works fine in all respects, other than I can’t get iplayer to work. It says that there is no internet connection, however it works fine in slingshot. I can’t access it from the red button or 901. I also don’t seem to have access to ITV player on 903.The firmware revision is 123R. Many thanks. Lachie.
