About the Goodmans GFSDTR500HD Freesat+ Digital Receiver

The Goodmans GFSDTR500HD Freesat+ High Definition Receiver is a Freesat PVR twin tuner 500GB hard drive receiver from Goodmans, part of the Harvard Group, for use on the Freesat satellite television platform.

The GFSDTR500HB receiver allows up to 125 hours HD and 312 hours SD recording time from the 500GB hard drive (depending on broadcast format), is a twin tuner allowing you to record one channel whilst watching another (two cables from your satellite dish required).

Note – Don’t forget that you’ll need a twin/quad LNB and two cables from your satellite dish to make full use of the twin tuners; with just a single cable from your satellite dish, you can still use but with limitations on recording, see our article on operating a PVR with one input.

I have just (Feb 2010) bought one of these at an extraordinarily good price from very.co.uk (Littlewoods). The asking price was £219, but I was offered a 10% discount code for it being my first order, then I used another code for free delivery! The final price including delivery was £197.10… and it arrived in less than 48 hours.

I’m very pleased with it – intuitive and simple to use and quick to boot. I especially like the Genre tabs on the EPG. Lots of capacity and good quality.

I am very dissappointed with this box. All the listings on the EPG say “no info available” so you cant browse it to see what to record. When i go to record a second programm it says i cant as im already recording two channels WHICH IM NOT. Its VERY noisy and crashes a lot… ALSO got mine from littlewoods and at £200 quid i expect it to work…

Got mine for 185.00 from dixons.com, free delivery. Bit noisy, but runs fine. Good value and happy with it. Will think about a humax for another room though as it’s not perfect.

I am thinking of ditching my SKY+ box and getting one of these. Does anyone know if you can do “series link” recording with this? (i.e. set it up so it will automatically record all programms in a series?)…nowhere does it say that it will do this but the Humax and Sagem boxes all state that they do…this will be a “buy no buy decision” for me…so if anyone can let me know I would be most grateful…thanks

I’ve been chasing the suppliers (Tesco and Maplin) to put pressure on Harvard to write an OTA software update.

Harvard are soooooooo hard to get hold of!

Will record series, just go into epg or library have a look at info if green S icon. when in Library press green button. done.

had a few problems with mine when first set up seems to be settling down. if epg lost record will not happen or records something completely different???

Re comment above about recording BBC HD. This fault developed after changes to the satellite channels. I spoke to Goodmans who are very aware of the problem but when the new OTA software will be available they didn’t know.

As it all worked fine before the changes it is unfair to blame them for a problem caused by someone else.

Having had two Humax freeview boxes with similar problems caused by transmitter changes there isn’t a lot of point getting upset about it.

I have had my Goodmans for about 6 months now and have no criticisms – for the money it is great.

of course you can blame Goodmans they wont do a software update. i issued a a a small claims court order against them in November within 2 weeks they refunded me without going to court !!!! They just want to keep it Quiet

When the Beeb changed their method of transmission back in June it stopped working on timer although you can still record if it you are around and can set it ‘live’. Before that it worked perfectly.

I spoke to Goodmans in the summer who acknowledged there is a problem and that it had been ‘escalated’ to head office.

I have been expecting an over air software update but so far nothing has shown up. Bearing in mind that the Harvard group who own Goodmans had a major issue with a previous update a few years ago I wonder if they are nervous about making any changes on the basis of if it ain’t (completely) broke, don’t try and fix it!

I know that the 320gb Goodmans freesat box has the series link function.;o)

Definitely has series link. Unlike Hummy boxes it is a 2 stage process. You choose the program first and then go into your recording list to add the link.

Works fine once you know how.

Does anyone else have this issue? Bought a Goodmans GFSDTR500HD box just over a year ago. It will now not record anything preset or live, and you can no longer pause live tv. Have checked all the connections and can’t see any problems there.

I would try a ‘first time installation’ from the settings menu and see if that clears your problem.
