    Hi all,

I have a brief review of the Echostar HDS-600RS if anyone is interested.

I’ve had mine for a while now & it hasn’t let me down once. The HD picture is superb, with upscaled SD pictures not too far behind. The design of both the box & the remote are real Marmite items, you either love or hate them, I love them but I did have a customer dismiss the Echostar purely on looks which is a shame.
I love the very clear menu structure, which has a app’s section containing the Slingloaded function, it will be interesting to see if & what other app’s become available, one function that I do like is when a recording clash occours this receiver will seach the schedules & offer alternative showing times that avoid the clash. The jewel in the Echostars crown is of course the Slingloaded function, which has also worked without any problems, the Slingloaded function enables you watch & control your Echostar Freesat channels & recordings on a smartphone, a computer or even another tv anywhere in the world (with a Slingcatcher), in my opinion this is a killer function which even beats Sky’s go service with its UK only limitations.
One function you cannot access remotely is the bbc i-player due to licencing restrictions, you just have to remember to set up a recording in the first place.
Its worth mentioning that the Slingplayer app for smartphones costs £20 which some will object to, but I think its worth everypenny, the Android version can be put on as many devices as you own, the pc / mac Slingplayer & browser based viewing options are provided free of charge. As this is a Freesat product there are no subscriptions or other ongoing costs . The recent price drop has brought it down to below the price of a 500gig Humax which represents very good value for money.

Now on sale at Blockbuster. A pity it looks like a cut off pyramid. That would really put me off buying one and if they are savvy they will junk that design fast and put it in a normal shaped box.

The design is fair less intrusive than you would think. Aside from the side detailing it fits perfectly in my TV unit. Far more so than my PS3.

Wish I could turn off the button backlight in the menus. Also wish the USB was useful for more than Firmware updates, seems a waist to proudly show it on the front, for what is a service port.

Maybe some sort of photo or music player or let me download a recording?

    Hi Richard / Chris,

I would be interested to know how much they cost at Blockbusters if anyone would be so kind !
They are unlikely to change the design, as all slingbox retail products are similar even the slinglink turbo home network plugs, I have to agree with Chris that when its in my stack it looks great. I’m hoping they will start offering app’s to go in the app’s menu which will make better use of the usb socket, things such as full media player with the facility to “sling” stream your media libary etc would be pretty good ! The more unique features they offer, the more units they will sell. I’m still Impressed with the box & very happy with it.

The new price point for this product in January is meant to be £199, which is why retailers like Blockbuster (and independents like Satbuyer) are now selling for that amount; however, the best deal must surely be Amazon, who are selling for an extremely low £179.99 at the moment:

Thats less than trade price, Its a very good price for the end user, as there is no longer any margin on these, I will have to do what I do with the basic boxes,I.E. pick them up from a retailer on the way to the job & give the customer the receipt so that the retailer is responsable for warrenty claims, its bad enough not being able to make enough to cover costs on freesat products but having to answer warrenty claims on something that you didn’t even make a profit on is a step too far !
Its a good thing for the customer & the platform & for that I’m happy, but not for those installing the products unless they drop the trade price enough to allow a profit margin, as no one can afford to work for nothing !

The price is certainly lower than I had expected it to go, but it isn’t less than trade to the likes of Amazon buying in such large quantities. Infact, the price is achievable for a few retailers now, but with zero margin which like you say, makes it a pointless sale if you are then responsible for warranty claims too.

the Echostar HDS-600RS Freesat+HD Digital Box information above says, it can record ONE channel, while you watch another ? IS THAT REALLY ALL it can do, apart from a few boxes claiming they can record up to three channels at a time, most do at least claim they are capable of recording TWO channels, while watching a third.
Only recording one channel would be a deal breaker for me, regardless of saving some money over the Humax.

I assume that must be a mistake in the information!

It is the official information from Echostar, but what it should actually say is that you can record one channel whilst watching/recording another; with two cables from the dish of course. Accessing a third channel wouldn’t be covered by the manufacturer because of the number of clauses to this such as only accessing a third channel providing it matches up with another channel from the same band etc.

But in answer to your question, it can of course record two channels at once.

Mark Aberfan. Please explain this slingbox thing, if I am going on a journey to a strange land what do I need to take with me to watch freesat on a TV at my journeys end. Also if Mrs Graham and the kids I left at home want to watch the BBC and I in my B&B in France want to watch Channel 5 the Gadget Show is this possible.
If this is not possible then I believe I would have to keep my Humax PVR and get an LNB with more outlets than the 4 I already use for the maine box and the 2 none PVR boxes in the kids bedrooms. Is this correct?

They were available for £199.99 but I used an on-line voucher, knocking another £7 off that price. Fetched it myself within half an hour.
Every Maplins store apparantly had two for sale to see how they went and they have virtually sold out very quickly and I was told they’d like more but they are not sure if they will get them.
Mine was from Stafford but only the Shrewsbury and Coventry shops seem to have them now in the entire W Midlands/North area.
I haven’t twigged everything yet but it’s very simple to set up and easy to use.
    The picture quality is superb.

The Echostar can only control the receiver as a whole, so if you change it when away, it will change on the receiver too. You’ll need the Echostar setup and linked to the broadband connection at home, then create a login account with Sling to access via your laptop on the move, or with an ipad etc, though the app is around £20.

Sorry for the delay answering you,

To add to admins reply, If you dont want to interfere with the viewing at home its best to add the Echostar to your existing system. The most outputs you can get from a sky dish is eight unless you go the multiswitch route. Also viewing is also possible on mobile phones, my wife has a android Sony with HDMI out & I have a HTC windows mobile phone, both work well with the Echostar the apps cost £20 a piece but are well worth it !

Got one before christmas, but only got to set it up in early Jan [missed out on the price reduction at amazon :-(].
Anyhow, set it up, and it downloaded a software update and installed it.

Initial use seemed fine, but I have hit a few horrible snags and need advice.
1- once set it to record and it seemed to get confused and it continued to record for hours past the end of the program. I could not get it to stop recording the program. In the end I had to pull the plug to get it to stop.
2- when connecting it to broadband it has frozen once or twice when viewing over the network thankfully, I was at home when this happened.
3- a few times the remote becomes unresponsive, i.e. it won’t change channel or anything else. Pressing the buttons on the front has no effect either. Again the only solution is to pull the plug.
4- after pulling the plug the last time, the ‘Guide’ now only shows all channels, it doesn’t show the sub divisions like entertainment and films.

    firmware version: 1.1.20
    product signature 12
    hardware version 1.0.0
    remote viewing No

    Any suggestions appreciated.

The best advice I can give if you are satisfied that a reboot wont help is to do a factory reset & re install. From your slingbox info it tells me that the box was unable to configure your modem for remote viewing, so pay particular attention to that part of the install, make a note if you get any error messages.

So far I’ve had no problems with the upgrade & I’m particularly happy with what they have upgraded, they have added functions (diseq etc ) that customers have asked for, so it looks like they are listening to what the customers want.

I am glad as well that they are fixing the bread and butter of the box first rather than adding fluff like Apps (I have iPlayer in so many places already) and media playback via USB. If that stuff isn’t fully baked I would rather have what we got which is far better.

I would loves some apps for my Echostar (paid & free) that can be accessed remotely via the sling function. Echostar/Slingmedia have a reputation for inovation, so I have high hope this box will get even better.

I think the only way to watch rec. programs on a 2nd tv is to use the scart output and connect it to a R F modulator, and do away tith the 2nd freesat box, if so would sky magic eyes work ?. It’s all confusing but great fun.

    Hi Jonathan,

It sounds like you have a faulty box or its not set up right, re others comments its true humax make very good boxes, I doubt if anyone here would argue with that, if you need a box with a modulated output then your need to find one that has it or buy a triax trilink or other more basic modulators., going back to your box check all settings / cables etc but if that dosent cure it you either need someone to check it for you or if you a confident that everything is set up right but you still have problems the box needs to be returned because what you describe is not normal or acceptable, Its hard to advise further as I have not come across any boxes with the fault you describe.

Hi folks, just had an Echostar 600 delivered yesterday, cost £179.99+£5 p+p from Satbuyer. Excellent prompt service by them. Anyway, the Echostar was so easy to set up and the latest Software Update(121R) is now available via satellite download, the box did it automatically, took about 5mins. I previously had a Humax Foxsat HDR which i was delighted with until the HDD failed and wiped every recording etc thereby rendering the box useless except as a twin tuner with no Record, Pause live tv functions. So took a chance on Echostar and although its early days, seems to be a good choice. Only gripes would be the Remote Control Handset- tiny buttons and its a weird shape. Non-Freesat Mode- i cant seem to access it? Really it is no big deal since most of the channels in “non” mode are rubbish. Should mention that SatBuyer also give you a 2 year Warranty on the Echostar, my Humax lasted barely 2 years.

Echostar appear to be serious about their foray into the Freesat market. My previous post,i made a negative comment about the Remote Control handset but i take it all back, its seriously quick and intuitive, the menu’s are fast and all in all i cannot fault this PVR @ under £180. A bargain and a serious rival to the Humax Foxsat HDR. Cheers

Downside the ipad app is a little on the expensive side to say the least in excess of €20 but I have been overseas and it works fine but quality of picture is not great but that is due to the restrtictions of my internet bandwidth. Where i found it ideal was that when overseas I noted a number of programmes I wished to record and was able to access and set up box to record them. This was ideal as when I returned they were there available to view. Note that its a freesat box and you will not be able to access RTE or other stations from ROI.

I suspect this was due to the latest Software Update (121R) as there is a few features that are no longer available.

You should e-mail them your frustration, pretty responsive company. More people that let them know, the better, the option may well return? I have yet to work out why the remote { or unit } goes into the land of nod as I try to keep remotes apart but every so often all of a sudden ‘ it appears ‘ the remote is not working but it is – either the remote is not sending the correct signal or the box is not picking it up – either way the above instructions has sorted it out.

Software is up to date (121R), done a factory reset but it still only records the first programme and non of the others that follow but if you go into the guide to try and record the next episode it says that it is already set to record but it never records.

Have emailed Echostar but still waiting for a response.

Thankfully I’ve only had it a few days and not yet cancelled the Sky subscription so if Echostar can’t resolve it back to the shop it goes for a refund….. Pity as I travel a lot for work and the built in Slingbox functionality was the reason I chose it over others. It’ll be back to the separate PVR and separate Slingbox.

My biggest gripe with the box is with the audio delay. I have my box plugged into some external speakers as I’m using a PC monitor for picture with no in-built audio. When using the analogue audio output the sound on some channels is delayed (normally SD channels) – when I correct it using the audio delay adjsutment some other channels are then out of sync.

When the box is switched off and on again the sync seems to change again. Through hdmi there is never a problem.

Series Link Recording Issue on HDS-600RS – 21st June 2012

We are aware of the issue some customers are experiencing with series recording on the HDS-600RS and we are currently testing a software update that will address these issues. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and we hope to have the updated software tested and approved for download in the coming days. In the meantime we suggest that you delete any previously set series link recordings and book each event individually.

The issue was caused by a change to the way in which signals are broadcast and therefore beyond our control.

Yes, in non-freesat mode. No problem

I got a HDS-600RS last March but haven’t been able to find an easy way to access non-freesat mode (without going into menu and changing settings etc.) around 12 button presses to get into non-freesat mode and another 12 button presses to get back to Freesat mode, not a realistic option. Is there an easier way?

  101. roger mellie Says:

Afraid thats the way it is on the Echostar, don’t recall needing around 12 button presses though? Menu/Settings/Tuning/Viewing Mode- freesat/non-freesat. There’s not a lot in non-freesat, Sly News/Titty tv etc and some Asian/African tv. It is a pain having to manually add each Transponder/Frequency right enough, I reckon Echostar’s main thought was to provide a decent PVR with SlingLoaded capabilities, which it does very well IMO.

I would simply contact Echostar via their website(support) and explain. Take it your box is still within its warranty/guarantee period? It could be any number of things- fuse in the plug, a power surge or a power supply problem within the box?

    Thanks Roger,

The unit itself is dead as tried the same lead on other things and no problem with that so I contacted Echostar but no reply yet.

However, as I bought through Amazon I contacted them and they have agreed a refund. Unfortunately they don’t have the box in stock so looks like Humax Fox Sat!

Good news on your refund Joe, just a wee word of caution about the Humax Foxsat hdr, the box is coming to the end of its “shelf life”. I have one, but prefer the Echostar personally, its faster and picture quality is better in my opinion. Humax is a good box but their customer service is poor. Good luck

my box is 60% full and all of a sudden it started not recording anything – it would claim it was recording but nothing was actually recorded.

I went to menu > settings > TV Library settings > Library setup > check for disc errors

it took about 1/2 a hour and there was no errors reported but more importantly since then it has started recording again – cant say if it will work for others but it worked for me.

I had heared nothing through the normal channels about this, normally I get notifications from Echostar.
I’m still holding out hope for a g2 box from Echostar or some apps for the app section & like ive said in the past I wouldn’t mind paying for a Slingplayer app for example .

Never really used ITV Player all that much – can’t stand watching the same advert over and over again – and shan’t be doing so if what I’ve seen so far is as good as the picture quality is going to get.

Hopefully the picture quality will improve over time, not much can be done about the adverts as they are after all ITV’s bread & butter!

    Hi Admin,

I fit Humax (first gen) as I still find these very reliable, Recently I done some dish & setup install where customers have bought bush pvrs & while these are not my first choice, (for £60 more a humax can be had !) I’m not seeing the issues that those boxes were having 18 months or so ago..

I’m not supplying the graded Echostars as a supplier offered me them for £4 less trade than they are sold retail, I’m not prepared to have to offer a years g’tee on a receiver that I made £4 on, its just not the way to stay in business !

I have been keeping a eye on this site, but there hasn’t been much to comment on lately, apart from the delayed freetime services, and at the time I was pretty angry, so I thought I’d hold back from posting because it wouldn’t have been very nice to say the least !
I could of easily promoted this service to my customers to then be made to look like a liar due to the broken promises, thankfully I’m not very trusting of what freesat say, mainly due to the itv player delays & never arriving on some gen 1 equipment.

The gen 1 Humax was discontinued months ago, where are you finding stock, or are you just selling graded units?

Try satbuyer, they have the Echostar graded in stock and might be able to do a trade deal for you!

    Hi admin

My supplier had about 8 new ones left last week, so I will have to look for something else, but I hesitate to sell gen 2 untill they are fully functioning.
Ive kept away from graded so far but iff there is little choice then I may have to look into them or just do the dish install and fit and let the customer source their own receiver, its not like i would miss out on any profit on the receiver and I dond mind missing out on receiver g’tee greif.
If the manufacturers and distributors want to cut the independents out of the chain there is little I can do about it but I wont work for nothing providing service on their kit.

Agreed, and that is why so many won’t deal with Humax, as they seem to be bias towards their own in-house retail division.

Just found this thread via Google. Was all set to buy one, but was suspicious of the lack of ‘new’ stock availability. So sent an email to Echostar on Friday and just got this reply:

“We have stopped manufacturing of this product but will continue to support it. If you are still interested in purchasing this product you can find it on the Amazon Marketplace and from one of our distributors – Turbosat
    (01795 429666).
There isn’t a replacement product imminent but we do have an alternative product that might be of interest; a Freeview DVR…”

So, I won’t be buying one after all. Not quite sure what to get instead. The Humax boxes don’t seem to be very reliable, looking at punter reviews.

Echostar and Freesat are still trying to resolve differences after Freesat wouldn’t allow Echostar to launch the same ‘slim’ version PVR as they did on Freeview. It was at a time when Freesat were stopping the G1 units and having manufacturers sign up to the G1 spec to ensure consistency across the range. Echostar have considered a freetime unit but with moving most of their facilities away from the UK, maybe they no longer see a financial advantage to doing so. We hope they change their mind and can launch a new product to take on Humax.

    Big Warning About 124R Update

    Echostar state – ITV on demand will no longer work – { which may explain why they have not made it public }

    Manual Software Update to 124R

You can manually update the HDS-600RS by following the steps below:

    Copy the update file 124R_usb_download.str { 16 MB’s }

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/i9cqz9xvrw5cbm7/124R_usb_download.str

    to an empty USB memory stick. { formatted to FAT32 }

Insert the USB memory stick into either the front or rear USB ports –

The screen will display a message confirming that the USB memory stick has been detected and shows the version number of the software update.

The HDS-600RS will reset and the front panel then displays “Loading…” followed by “Please wait”.

The updating process may take up to 5 minutes. When it is complete, the HDS-600RS will automatically restart.

Now as to what problems it solves I am not sure but its worth a gamble as I doubt there will be a new update any time this year.
