Just left SKY, and this appeared to be the best option for me. With Slingmedia included, it just makes it a superb device.
Got it yesterday, and works well so far!!

Hi all,
I have a brief review of the Echostar HDS-600RS if anyone is interested.
I’ve had mine for a while now & it hasn’t let me down once. The HD picture is superb, with upscaled SD pictures not too far behind. The design of both the box & the remote are real Marmite items, you either love or hate them, I love them but I did have a customer dismiss the Echostar purely on looks which is a shame.
I love the very clear menu structure, which has a app’s section containing the Slingloaded function, it will be interesting to see if & what other app’s become available, one function that I do like is when a recording clash occours this receiver will seach the schedules & offer alternative showing times that avoid the clash. The jewel in the Echostars crown is of course the Slingloaded function, which has also worked without any problems, the Slingloaded function enables you watch & control your Echostar Freesat channels & recordings on a smartphone, a computer or even another tv anywhere in the world (with a Slingcatcher), in my opinion this is a killer function which even beats Sky’s go service with its UK only limitations.
One function you cannot access remotely is the bbc i-player due to licencing restrictions, you just have to remember to set up a recording in the first place.
Its worth mentioning that the Slingplayer app for smartphones costs £20 which some will object to, but I think its worth everypenny, the Android version can be put on as many devices as you own, the pc / mac Slingplayer & browser based viewing options are provided free of charge. As this is a Freesat product there are no subscriptions or other ongoing costs . The recent price drop has brought it down to below the price of a 500gig Humax which represents very good value for money.

Now on sale at Blockbuster. A pity it looks like a cut off pyramid. That would really put me off buying one and if they are savvy they will junk that design fast and put it in a normal shaped box.
Richard CrichtonQuote

The design is fair less intrusive than you would think. Aside from the side detailing it fits perfectly in my TV unit. Far more so than my PS3.
Wish I could turn off the button backlight in the menus. Also wish the USB was useful for more than Firmware updates, seems a waist to proudly show it on the front, for what is a service port.
Maybe some sort of photo or music player or let me download a recording?

Hi Richard / Chris,
I would be interested to know how much they cost at Blockbusters if anyone would be so kind !
They are unlikely to change the design, as all slingbox retail products are similar even the slinglink turbo home network plugs, I have to agree with Chris that when its in my stack it looks great. I’m hoping they will start offering app’s to go in the app’s menu which will make better use of the usb socket, things such as full media player with the facility to “sling” stream your media libary etc would be pretty good ! The more unique features they offer, the more units they will sell. I’m still Impressed with the box & very happy with it.

The new price point for this product in January is meant to be £199, which is why retailers like Blockbuster (and independents like Satbuyer) are now selling for that amount; however, the best deal must surely be Amazon, who are selling for an extremely low £179.99 at the moment:

Must be a mistake!

Hi admin,
Thats less than trade price, Its a very good price for the end user, as there is no longer any margin on these, I will have to do what I do with the basic boxes,I.E. pick them up from a retailer on the way to the job & give the customer the receipt so that the retailer is responsable for warrenty claims, its bad enough not being able to make enough to cover costs on freesat products but having to answer warrenty claims on something that you didn’t even make a profit on is a step too far !
Its a good thing for the customer & the platform & for that I’m happy, but not for those installing the products unless they drop the trade price enough to allow a profit margin, as no one can afford to work for nothing !

The price is certainly lower than I had expected it to go, but it isn’t less than trade to the likes of Amazon buying in such large quantities. Infact, the price is achievable for a few retailers now, but with zero margin which like you say, makes it a pointless sale if you are then responsible for warranty claims too.

the Echostar HDS-600RS Freesat+HD Digital Box information above says, it can record ONE channel, while you watch another ? IS THAT REALLY ALL it can do, apart from a few boxes claiming they can record up to three channels at a time, most do at least claim they are capable of recording TWO channels, while watching a third.
Only recording one channel would be a deal breaker for me, regardless of saving some money over the Humax.
I assume that must be a mistake in the information!
CurlyBQuote
January 4th, 2012 at 4:51 pm
It is the official information from Echostar, but what it should actually say is that you can record one channel whilst watching/recording another; with two cables from the dish of course. Accessing a third channel wouldn’t be covered by the manufacturer because of the number of clauses to this such as only accessing a third channel providing it matches up with another channel from the same band etc.
But in answer to your question, it can of course record two channels at once.

Mark Aberfan. Please explain this slingbox thing, if I am going on a journey to a strange land what do I need to take with me to watch freesat on a TV at my journeys end. Also if Mrs Graham and the kids I left at home want to watch the BBC and I in my B&B in France want to watch Channel 5 the Gadget Show is this possible.
If this is not possible then I believe I would have to keep my Humax PVR and get an LNB with more outlets than the 4 I already use for the maine box and the 2 none PVR boxes in the kids bedrooms. Is this correct?
grahamQuote
January 6th, 2012 at 9:46 pm
You seem to expect a lot from a box Graham!
Maybe it’s possible to watch 2 things at the same time.
Perhaps Mark (post number 3) can help?
I have one of these on order from Amazon at the knock-down price £179.99.

I’ve just picked up one from Maplins.
They were available for £199.99 but I used an on-line voucher, knocking another £7 off that price. Fetched it myself within half an hour.
Every Maplins store apparantly had two for sale to see how they went and they have virtually sold out very quickly and I was told they’d like more but they are not sure if they will get them.
Mine was from Stafford but only the Shrewsbury and Coventry shops seem to have them now in the entire W Midlands/North area.
I haven’t twigged everything yet but it’s very simple to set up and easy to use.
The picture quality is superb.
Recommended.

The Echostar can only control the receiver as a whole, so if you change it when away, it will change on the receiver too. You’ll need the Echostar setup and linked to the broadband connection at home, then create a login account with Sling to access via your laptop on the move, or with an ipad etc, though the app is around £20.

Hi Graham,
Sorry for the delay answering you,
To add to admins reply, If you dont want to interfere with the viewing at home its best to add the Echostar to your existing system. The most outputs you can get from a sky dish is eight unless you go the multiswitch route. Also viewing is also possible on mobile phones, my wife has a android Sony with HDMI out & I have a HTC windows mobile phone, both work well with the Echostar the apps cost £20 a piece but are well worth it !

Got one before christmas, but only got to set it up in early Jan [missed out on the price reduction at amazon
].
Anyhow, set it up, and it downloaded a software update and installed it.
Initial use seemed fine, but I have hit a few horrible snags and need advice.
1- once set it to record and it seemed to get confused and it continued to record for hours past the end of the program. I could not get it to stop recording the program. In the end I had to pull the plug to get it to stop.
2- when connecting it to broadband it has frozen once or twice when viewing over the network thankfully, I was at home when this happened.
3- a few times the remote becomes unresponsive, i.e. it won’t change channel or anything else. Pressing the buttons on the front has no effect either. Again the only solution is to pull the plug.
4- after pulling the plug the last time, the ‘Guide’ now only shows all channels, it doesn’t show the sub divisions like entertainment and films.
firmware version: 1.1.20
product signature 12
hardware version 1.0.0
remote viewing No
Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi Tom,
That info is correct & you have the same software as I have, I presume you put a NI postcode in at point of install.
The best advice I can give if you are satisfied that a reboot wont help is to do a factory reset & re install. From your slingbox info it tells me that the box was unable to configure your modem for remote viewing, so pay particular attention to that part of the install, make a note if you get any error messages.

Hi Mark,
well that fixed my series link problem
I have to agree the tweaks and improvements are really nice. Auto Grouping of recordings is nice as I had set quite a few of the same series manually.
I am glad as well that they are fixing the bread and butter of the box first rather than adding fluff like Apps (I have iPlayer in so many places already) and media playback via USB. If that stuff isn’t fully baked I would rather have what we got which is far better.
I like the Daily Schedule too.

I’m glad you’re sorted, I agree with you its very important to have a solid reliable box & a manufacturer that takes care of its customers & products, Humax set a fantastic example & Echostar have shown that Humax have a serious competitor , now with Manhattan in the game Freesat have three superb companies making some great kit at very good prices.
I would loves some apps for my Echostar (paid & free) that can be accessed remotely via the sling function. Echostar/Slingmedia have a reputation for inovation, so I have high hope this box will get even better.

Can I ask mark a question please
I have just bought the Echostar based on the discussions so far
Amazon were laser fast ordered fri arrived mon and I needed 4 port sat dish so got aerial chap in to fit new dish
But…. Great signal strength and great hd pic.. Better than old humax.. But the rest of the channels flick and strobe… Pic but can’t watch for long
What do we do?
Tried to adjust the resolution format down from best and it won’t move!
Assume that’s the problem?
The remote is fiddly v fiddly and slow to move up and down the menus
Also tricky to read as small print!
So not that pleased or impressed if that helps…!
Local shop and tv man said.. Just go for humax as just works
Also they have a rf socket whatever that means and so you can send recorded programmes all over house

I think the only way to watch rec. programs on a 2nd tv is to use the scart output and connect it to a R F modulator, and do away tith the 2nd freesat box, if so would sky magic eyes work ?. Hi Jonathan,
It sounds like you have a faulty box or its not set up right, re others comments its true humax make very good boxes, I doubt if anyone here would argue with that, if you need a box with a modulated output then your need to find one that has it or buy a triax trilink or other more basic modulators., going back to your box check all settings / cables etc but if that dosent cure it you either need someone to check it for you or if you a confident that everything is set up right but you still have problems the box needs to be returned because what you describe is not normal or acceptable, Its hard to advise further as I have not come across any boxes with the fault you describe.
Sorry for the delay in replying to you, I’ve been a bit busy & didn’t spot your post.

Hi folks, just had an Echostar 600 delivered yesterday, cost £179.99+£5 p+p from Satbuyer. Excellent prompt service by them. Anyway, the Echostar was so easy to set up and the latest Software Update(121R) is now available via satellite download, the box did it automatically, took about 5mins. I previously had a Humax Foxsat HDR which i was delighted with until the HDD failed and wiped every recording etc thereby rendering the box useless except as a twin tuner with no Record, Pause live tv functions. So took a chance on Echostar and although its early days, seems to be a good choice. Only gripes would be the Remote Control Handset- tiny buttons and its a weird shape. Non-Freesat Mode- i cant seem to access it? Really it is no big deal since most of the channels in “non” mode are rubbish. Should mention that SatBuyer also give you a 2 year Warranty on the Echostar, my Humax lasted barely 2 years.

Just an update for anyone interested in the Echostar 600, no problems at all with the box, the latest software update seems to have solved any problems that people who purchased an early version of this PVR may have encountered. Echostar appear to be serious about their foray into the Freesat market. My previous post,i made a negative comment about the Remote Control handset but i take it all back, its seriously quick and intuitive, the menu’s are fast and all in all i cannot fault this PVR @ under £180. A bargain and a serious rival to the Humax Foxsat HDR. Cheers

Sean, i bought the Echostar mainly as a Freesat recorder, but i cant see any problems for you using the sling function from Ireland. You could try e-mailing or phoning Echostar directly. http://www.myechostar.com is the website, they are pretty helpful. Good luck

The box works fine in Ireland and is a brilliant piece of kit. Downside the ipad app is a little on the expensive side to say the least in excess of €20 but I have been overseas and it works fine but quality of picture is not great but that is due to the restrtictions of my internet bandwidth. Where i found it ideal was that when overseas I noted a number of programmes I wished to record and was able to access and set up box to record them. This was ideal as when I returned they were there available to view. Note that its a freesat box and you will not be able to access RTE or other stations from ROI.

Can you do the Input/Output loop to watch/record 2 channels without the extra cable from the dish? Like you can with the Humax HDR.

Just a warning for anyone shopping at Maplins:
Check the seal on the box, if its broken do not accept it!
They are selling both new & ‘graded’ boxes but seem to be trying to pass off the graded stock as new.
This happened to me & to a friend who went to a different branch.

Not convinced Echostar will have a G2 spec receiver.

That would be a shame for fans of the Slingloaded box & freesat as a platform, as it provides the only answer to Skys Go service & not having geographical restrictions that are on the pay tv service its superior in my opinion.

I suspect this was due to the latest Software Update (121R) as there is a few features that are no longer available.
I have it confirmed by Echostar that manual schedule was removed by the latest update although they did not explain why .
I recently bought one and the instruction book that came with the unit has now been updated
http://www.myechostar.com/Support/Downloads.aspx
click user guide – you will see the guide has been adjusted.
Cant say if they have any plans to bring back the features all I know is they for whatever reason were disabled. { well at least on brand new machines }

Hi brian, yeah setting a manual recording is no longer available, reading some other forums a few Echostar owners are unhappy about that. I’ve never had the need to use manual record on any PVR to be honest, series linking or one-off prog recording have always served me fine. Since my post you refer to, i’ve added non-freesat channels no problem though. I’m still real happy with the 600HDS as a PVR, its very easy to use and hasn’t let me down recording-wise either. Thanks for your reply

Hi Roger – well done over non-freesat channels.
well on Friday I had set up a series link to record
Above Suspicion ITV3 Friday 27th April 21:00 to 22:35
Above Suspicion ITV3 Friday 27th April 22:35 to 23:35
if I had manual recording I would have set it up for 21:00 to 23.50 which does the same thing but with no risk of missing anything.
The machine only recorded the first episode and no sign of the second which does not give me confidence for the future.
At least with manual record I am in full control and dont have to depend on a chip.
I just cant work out why they removed manual recording as its the most basic feature a Customer should expect – Had I been aware in advance it had been removed I would not have bought the echostar.

Hi Guys,
I may have found the reason for the lack of news about Echostar Freesat, it looks like they have been busy getting a new Freeview + hd ready for launch,
see here,
http://www.myechostar.co.uk/Products/ConnectedDevices/HDT-610R.aspx
At least we now Know that they are not pulling out of the UK market as some have suggested. Hopefully once the new Freeview box has launched we will get some updates / apps for the hds 600rs or even news of a G2 box.
I have to say their new Freesat HD+ box is very impressive looking.

Hi there Brian, yeah it seems strange for Echostar to have removed the manual record function, perhaps they have been a wee bit too presumptious, thinking that people would settle for series linking. You should e-mail them your frustration, pretty responsive company. More people that let them know, the better, the option may well return? I have been recording The Bridge on sat nights via series link no problem though, hasn’t missed anything. Good luck.
Hi Mark, Echostars new Freeview pvr looks amazing, how can it be so slim? Looks so good that i even entered their free draw to win one! Wonder how much it will retail for though. Not sure i’d splash out on one as i have tv with built-in Freeview and other budget stb’s around the house. Freesat is number 1 for viewing here. All the best

I love my Echostar box and I like the fact that if I try to record an HD programme on BBC1 or ITV1, the box tells me its available in HD and allows me to record it in HD from a dialog box.
However, it does not do the same for Channel 4 HD or BBC HD, and I understand it should.
Does anybody else have this problem?

Yeah, ch4 doesn’t seem to offer the record in HD option for me either, all in all its a great PVR though, i also like the “trailer booking” option too, when a new programme/series is advertised on bbc1 the small box appears on screen saying “book me?”

This is getting to be a right pain in the arse as its happened to me twice before.
All of a sudden the remote will not Communicate with the unit.
Sometimes these designers try to be too clever by half.
Here is a simple solution { although it should not be necessary in the first place }
Re-pairing the remote & HDS-600RS: WITHOUT re-setting everything
- Point the remote at the unit
- Press & hold down the “right” and “OK” key for Five seconds
- LED { on remote control } will flash twice
- Unit should now respond to the remote

Have read elsewhere that other Remotes in use can interfere/disrupt the Echostar one. Thanks for your solution Brian.

Having changed from the Goodmans box to the Echostar under warranty period I have to say that it is a vastly superior machine. Mind when I bought the Goodmans the Echostar was more than £100 more I got it for £10 more a couple of months back.
I don’t use any of the sling stuff as it is in our holiday home with no wired broadband, but as a competent box, easy to use (once you get used to a few little foibles), I cannot knock it.

Re – roger mellie ‘ Have read elsewhere that other Remotes in use can interfere/disrupt the Echostar one. Thanks for your solution Brian. ‘
Its not my Solution – I found it though a message board a few days before I bought it – a far as I recall a Customer contacted Echostar and they sent back the instructions.
I have yet to work out why the remote { or unit } goes into the land of nod as I try to keep remotes apart but every so often all of a sudden ‘ it appears ‘ the remote is not working but it is – either the remote is not sending the correct signal or the box is not picking it up – either way the above instructions has sorted it out.
its so easy to sort it out but if you don’t know the two keys to hold down it could end up driving a person up the wall.
