About the Manhattan Plaza HDR-S Freesat+HD Digital Box

Behold the new Manhattan Plaza HDR-S, simple, modern, uncluttered; we like it a lot!

This will be the design for the 320GB Manhattan Plaza HDR-S Freesat+HD Receiver due for launch in May. We very much like the simplistic look of it, black panel with 5 buttons on the top lip (rewind, stop, play/pause, fastforward, record).

Some of the key features include:

– Whisper Quiet – Unlike most TV recorders the Plaza HDR-S is whisper quiet in operation due to its fanless design and use of the latest hard disk technology from Western Digital. The AV-class hard disk uses a Fluid Dynamic Bearing motor to reduce noise and increase reliability whilst IntelliSeek™ optimises seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise and vibration.
– The Plaza HDR-S keeps things organised for you by automatically grouping your recordings by series.
– Freesat On Demand TV with BBC iPlayer & ITV Player
– Favourites function simplified and improved from HD-S. There’s only a single list (which makes setting up favourites easier) and you can now filter the EPG to just show your favourites by pressing the STAR button in the EPG.
– Whilst watching TV you can press the STAR button to change to your next favourites channel, however if you bring the banner up first it will just cycle the banner thru your favourite channels, allowing you to easily see what is on your favourite channels without leaving live TV.
– Auto scan of non-freesat channels as on Plaza HD-S. These can be added to your favourites list and accessed via the STAR button on the remote (though not in the EPG, which is freesat-only).
– You can set programmes to record, to be reminded about, or both.
– When not in use the Plaza HDR-S’ advanced power management automatically puts it into an ultra low-power standby mode that consumes less than 1W of power.
– Ultra compact – it’s actually shorter and less deep than the Plaza HD-S and only 2cm wider.

Bought one.worst box I have ever had.does not record properly, thinks its already recording two channels when its not.also fails to live pause.
The remote needs to be aimed directly at the Box to work, and feels rubbish.
My old Goodman’s free sat box is much better.
Don’t waste your money on this buy a humax.

    Hi dj dex,

I’d like to get to the bottom of your problems as we’ve tested the PVR functionality extensively and can’t reproduce what you report.

If the box is in Live Pause Mode and you are recording another channel, then the receiver is in fact recording two channels as Live Pause Mode uses one of the tuners to make a recording. I wonder if that’s what’s happening for you?

When you say it “fails to live pause”, can you provide more feedback on this?

Regarding the remote control, I’m sorry you don’t like it. The DTG do test remote control response, and it should work equally well as with any other approved receiver… certainly in the DTG report it has been verified to work at a variety of angles and distances.

I’m keen for you to be happy with your box. After you answer my questions it would be best if you contact our technical department directly via phone or our website so we can help diagnose and resolve the problem. For privacy reasons this site does not reveal either of our email addresses otherwise I’d contact you directly.

    All the best,

    Alex

Have had the Manhattan Plaza HDR-S from SatBuyer for a couple of weeks now and have not had an entirely trouble free time with it. The main problem seems to be that scheduled recording appear to be failing if you are watching a previously recorded programme from the Library. This has happened at lest twice now. I have also had a problem with live pause when the unit didn’t seem to respond on one occasion. I will contact SatBuyer in the morning.

i have a photo of the live pause failed screen.
this happens from time to time, but not all the time.
it happens when nothing is recording at all.
it now looks like matthew is having same sort of problems.
i think i will keep plodding on and buy the new humax free time box later in the year.

    A review for anyone interested

This is my first Freesat box of any type so I can’t make any comparisons, that said on its own merits this is a good piece of kit. It a very unobtrusive box – small, light and silent with the sole light a subtle shade of red/blue (depending on mode), the set up was painless and quick with the integration of the non Freesat channels onto the favourites list very easy (having them all on the one list is definitely a plus point). Picture and sound are first class, the PVR aspect has so far been glitch free. Selection of programmes for recording is simple and locating them in the library quick and painless. I only have a single input so can’t comment how well it works when recording and watching a different channel.

The remote is small and very light but has not posed any handling issues for me. The direction “sensitively” is greater than that of a SKY remote but its good enough not to harm usability. 320 GBs capacity will possibly be an issue for some but I’m not one for archiving every episode of long running series so 200 SD/80 HD hours storage is fine for me.

So what would I like? So far the only thing is the ability to not just speed up FF/Rev but also to slow same down by increments rather than crashing back to real time in one go which can cause some playback bumps for a few seconds.

    8/10 from this user.

That’s a bit harsh, most manufacturers launch products they think are suitable but in Manhattan’s case, they have listened to feedback and taken a huge step of introducing a new remote…not many other brands would do that.

The new remote has bigger buttons and the touch is much better. The old remote feels like it has wobble in the buttons and don’t always pick up by the receiver.

Maybe drop Manhattan an email, they might be able to offer a subsidised deal to you on the new remote.

All stock after the very initial production has the new remote, and much of the initial production had it swapped into the box, so there should only be a very small amount (< 1000) of the old remotes out there, and we are willing to replace them all if customers want.

Having done my research before deciding to buy the HDR-S, it was clear to me that that the Manhattan Team are ‘customer orientated.’ Customer feedback is far more honest than having a ‘focus group,’ which may give the answers that members of the group feel the company wants to hear. Real world experience helps all of us when discussing issues that affect us.
I had a problem with my box. I phoned the technical Team. I told them what wasn’t happening. They listened. I then followed their instructions. Problem solved there and then. Nuff said.

REVIEW- FANTASTIC VALUE GREAT PIECE OF KIT.

I have just taken delivery of the Manhattan HDR S from TESCO throu it’s online sales division TESCO DIRECT. From the moment picking up this device yesterday It has worked like a dream.
It looks like all the previous concerns have been taken into account as delivered with new remote came as standard, a HDMI cable that works great and a clear and simple info booklet that shows clear steps How to Setup this amazing box. I called SKY yesterday and cancelled my record only subscription on my SKY + Box as won’t be needing this again! There was no problem in switching over to the services the MP HDR-S has to offer which currently includes freesat and non- freesat channels, BBC IPLAYER and ITV Player- the issue of not having this player immediately available in Scotland is overcome simply by using an English or Scottish Borders postcode and it appears in the on-demand section on the main menu- simple!
The Recording facility is equal or better than the SKY+ box and easily accessible throu the Library button which neatly lists, as well as groups, multiple recordings of episodes and has access a to neat recording schedule so you know at a glance what you are yet to record. The MP HDR s also has instant record features so you don’t have to miss anything you really want to see, but it also has the option to preplanned two channel recording. It also operates as quiet as a mouse!
I am aware that there  is a software update available to sync HD sound modulation (volume)  with TV internal electronics but really it’s hardly noticeable ! At the moment all is well: easy programme menus, great daily planner, records like a dream, HD is great picture quality with various resolution options available. You can be that i’m in love with my Manhattan Plaza HDR-S.
The only item I await to find out about is the recently announced new service from Google is that “will YouTube work on the MP HDR S”?
Great kit for the price **********

Also is this still a buggy box even with the all the released firmware updates? reading some of the other comments, could the reported freezing problems not be caused by internal components over heating due to the boxes lack of fan?

It will be interesting to see if many people have had problems during the recent hot weather.

Having had one for a while its certainly not trouble free, ive had the software update and thier customer service was great.
However it isnt consistant, sometimes it thinks its already recording two things and it isnt and sometimes it does not record at all, it misses parts of the programme eg end and beginning but to alter the add on front and back ive no doubt would realy confuse it .Came down one morning and it got totaly confused and had been recording all night since 8pm the previous day(sky box did this too) again reboot..
It stutters after you take it off pause and some times the legend wont go , so you have to press pause and play then it clears.
In the Schedule it continues to search for programmes in a series that it has already recorded plus it records all of say Holby on all regions at different times when you have asked it to do yorks and lincs , suddenly you get a repeat on say Scotland ..unless you choose the HD version .
It forgets its self by telling you there has been a error and to reformat the disc , i just turn it all off at the mains and its back, mind you the Sky plus box did this.
The remote is so very directional and the buttons more than useless in thier sensitivity, i have small hands even for a woman and the buttons are so very close together .

Bottom line is yes i guess for its price its Ok , but id never repeat the experience. Its frustrateing to say the least and im grateful i dont watch a lot of telly, tho the upscaleing and clarity of both sound and vision is far far superoir to a Sky box , which i think is a Samsung?

I bought a Humax freesat HDR1000S , took the software upgrade on the day it came and ive had no problems, the remote is a dream and the box does not put a foot wrong, picture quality is streets and houses above both Sky and the Manhatton box and the sound does not bounce up and down on HD to normal TV like it has in the past with the Sky or Manhatton.

Hi you might want to update the firmware which addresses the recording issue.
Apparently you need to do a reset to factory default settings for the update to take effect but this can be done without losing any recordings. You might want to ask Alex at Manhattan about this.

    Hi,

I apologise for anyone having trouble with the receiver, but please visit our website (www.manhattan-tv.com) so that we can assist you. We have just released a major update that overhauls the core code and recording code. Because it is such a big overhaul, it requires resetting to factory default, which is why we can’t put it out as an automatic download, as we can’t be resetting people’s boxes automatically.

We’ve done lengthy field tests with a number of customers before making this release and it has resolved all their issues, so I’m confident that for anyone having trouble it will do the same. Part of the problem with solving these types of bugs is being able to reproduce them as every setup is different, but thanks to the assistance of our customers we have been able to do so.

    Thanks!

Please check your tuner connections.’
Surely if there was something wrong with the connections I’d have problems watching programmes conventionally? Am I doing something stupid?

Hi all, I bought one of these boxes from Amazon on 3rd of September & promptly returned it on the 9th. It would not control the tv sound it froze & on start up I got the GREEN SCREEN effect. The tv I have is a brand new TOSHIBA ( this is my third TOSHIBA as I have had no problems with them) so I am afraid Manhattan is without doubt off the list.

I am having same problems. Recording two channels when recording only one. (and not on live pause.) Unexplained internal error, fails to record. Happens frequently. It even contined to record a Lewis episode for 11 hours, (used over half of memory) Box is just over a year old but it should last longer than that. I am disabled and so fixed income and cannot afford to replace this thing every year.

I am also having problems with this box, it tells me I am recording two programmes when I am not, will not live pause, recordings fail on a regular basis and scheduled programmes won’t record (there is even a particular programme I cannot even set up as the box won’t let me put it on schedule).
Being a pensioner and not knowing that much about these boxes (this is my first), I naturally thought it was me but now I see others are having the problem. Could someone please let me know what I should do next?
I have had the box since July 2014 and it has been like this all the time.
    Many thanks.
