About the Panasonic DMR-BS880 Freesat+ HD Blu-Ray 500GB Digital Box
Blu-ray Disc™ Recorder with Twin HD Satellite Tuner compatible with Freesat+ and 500GB HDD
DIGA’s H.264 encoder compresses the recorded programmes at a lower bitrates but retain its high-definition resolution. The images are crisp and clear due to advanced compression technologies that are optimized to match each scene. PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus is a high quality image processing technology developed to precisely process each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc™ video signal. It reproduces colour data with twice the accuracy of conventional systems to keep colours faithful and sharp.
With more than 140 digital TV and radio channels to choose from it’s fairly likely that at some point you will want to record two programmes broadcast at the same time. The freesat+ Twin Tuner allows you the freedom to do this and offers a multitude of other viewing and recording options.
The 35-hour long time archiving in HM mode is also convenient for saving hard disk space. In HM mode, a maximum of 35 hours of high definition recording data can be save onto BD-RE DL/BD-R DL (50GB).
DIGA becomes more convenient with addition of Rewind Live TV. On top of Pause Live TV which let you pause live TV programmes as if you are watching recorded programmes, Rewind Live TV will allow you to rewind live TV to the scene which you want to, upto 2 hours, so you won’t miss important moments. *Rewind Live TV will be effective while channel stays the same. *The function of Rewind Live TV does not work during simultaneous recording. *For Pause Live TV, when 8 hours pass since the programme was recorded, the recording stops.
Using DLNA® technology, Panasonic Blu-ray Disc™ players and home cinema systems can access files on the DLNA Server Blu-ray Disc™ Recorder DMR-BS880 or compliant PC*. By simply connecting to Home Network (LAN), you can enjoy AVCHD, JPEG files and recorded programmes on your DIGA or AVCHD, WMV, and JPEG on your PC*. *Requires Windows 7 Operating System.

possibly not “on topic”, but as this new model is now available, you can pick up a bargain with the old model (bs850) now on offer for around £420!

The equivalent Freeview HD model is getting bad reviews because apparently the EPG screen contains adverts.
No idea whether the new Freesat version does the same but it may be wise to view a working model before purchase.
I also grabbed a BS850 very cheaply (slightly below your price, Al.

Do you need 2 sat dishes for this product or can you run 2 cables to the single dish?

You only need 1 dish but at least a twin LNB on the dish. Most of the time Sky put a quad LNB on the dish. If you only have a single LNB you would need to replace it to make the most of this product

I’ve been looking at this product for some time now, but was always put off by the hefty price tag. However, I managed to see an ex-display one in comet the other day for £375! yep, £375! the only thing wrong was a tiny hairline scratch of about 4mm on the front fascia. I simply couldn’t resist buying it!
As far as the product goes, it does exactly what it says on the tin. Huge memory, excelelnt freesat compatability, fantastic blu-ray player and recorder andi nternet access to boot. Brilliant. The only downside I’ve seen with it so far is this…
i’ve used sky + for a good few years now, and then when i looked at my planner of recorded programmes, I realised that I was only recording terrestrial channels. This is what prompted me to go to freesat +. However, when you look at what you have recorded on the panasonic, it doesn’t allow you to view the programme synopsis (as in the freesat guide), it only allows you to look at the recording info (date, title, HD/SD etc). A minor thing, but very irritating when you want to watch a specific episode of something.
so all in all 98% why? perfection has to strived for, and it’s the little irritations that make conversations so interesting!

How can it be ‘product of the year’ when it can’t record C4HD or 5HD?

re. peterhb
Because you can’t get them on freesat … yet!

@peterhb
Because it is what Freesat deem their platforms best product. It isn’t Panasonic’s fault that those channels aren’t available.
