Inspired by a comment made recently, I thought it would be a good idea to produce a list of all fta/ftv channels currently available within the UK (astra2/eurobird1) that Freesat don’t have included in the EPG. Now obviously some of these channels may be classed as “less exciting” but as you may know, these channels would pay an annual fee for inclusion within the Freesat EPG (tv guide), which means money in the Freesat pocket for future growth, and an increased possibility of more good folk becoming Freesat viewers/customers to enjoy their fav channels.
All those listed as fta are “free-to-air” meaning there is no obvious reason why they couldn’t join Freesat, apart from willingness to pay up for inclusion. Those listed ftv are “free-to-view” meaning whilst they are not tied to a subscription provider, they are currently encrypted which requires a Sky viewing card and digibox. There may be more fta/ftv channels out there, but these are the ones found so far.
I’d encourage all of you to visit some of the web links to channels you may be interested in, then contact them (again using the links) to encourage them to join Freesat. Don’t forget that putting pressure on broadcasters and showing them there is enough interest is very important in the decision making process. I’ve not produced a template email to send because I feel individual unique responses would gain a better reaction, but don’t forget to mention things like how Freesat is free, readily accessible and already has well over 2 million sales (potential eyes watching).
Those key channels I’d recommend we definately focus on contacting would be the ftv ones, as more often than not they are looking for a way out of the encryption at the end of their contract (with Sky); these include Channel 5 HD, Sony Entertainment Television, Viva, Motors TV and LFC TV.
I’ve also included within the list a number of channels I deem “soft subscription”; what I mean by this is that these are high profile premium category channels (sports and movies) contracted to Sky within weak subscription packages, i.e. Entertainment Extra pack, not Sports pack or Movies pack, which assumes the revenue they gain from this is small in comparison, so over 2 million Freesat sales might start looking attractive. These channels include (sports) British Eurosport, Extreme Sports Channel and ESPN Classic, plus (movies) TCM and Movies 24.

Will be contacting quite a few.
patsyQuote

As far as I’m aware, Premier Sports is a premium channel on satellite, so only available through Sky. Premium subscription channels are never likely to come to Freesat because of the huge costs associated with sports rights.

Hi again. Any chance that RTE could come on board. I appreciate there may be problems with copyright on some of their broadcasts. Maybe RTE NEWS for a starter would not only please the Irish diaspora but I feel would really increase the Freesat user numbers.
patsyQuote
January 27th, 2012 at 3:18 pm
It doesn’t seem likely because of the Irish broadcasting laws. RTE doesn’t broadcast in the clear, so even being able to add to non-freesat mode isn’t possible.

January 27th, 2012 at 3:27 pm
@Patsy
I agree that RTE News would at least be a start, but and correct me here if I am wrong, is that broadcast at 28.2/5 ?? I thought it was only online or part of Saorview / Saorsat.

The point of the post is to see what channels realistically could come to Freesat. Quest TV is a subscription channels, so would need a lot more than a potential 2 million sales to drop their existing subscription revenue.
adminQuote

No chance. There were plans for an RTE International channel but it got dropped due to the financial crisis in Ireland.
RoscoQuote
January 27th, 2012 at 5:09 pm
I think that should be Freesat’s job. They could do more to promote the service, just buy a cheap second FTA receiver if you want Sky News or any of the other channels.
Freesat could also lower their prices, yes I know they are lower than Sky’s, this could encourage smaller channels to join.
ExpatQuote
January 27th, 2012 at 5:12 pm
Why would you need a FTA receiver when you can access the FTA channels in non-Freesat mode on an official Freesat box?!?! There is no harm in anyone contacting these channels if they want them.
Freesat are a not-for-profit organisation and are currently running at a loss (as expected in first few years) so not much chance of an EPG reduction.
adminQuote
January 27th, 2012 at 5:18 pm
The epg fees are insignificant compared to the transmission costs. Any channel thast cant afford £30k for the Freesat epg isnt going to last very long in the first place.

Every little helps although getting your friends, relatives and neighbours to buy a Freesat box or TV is the best way to help Freesat grow. Also people asking about Freesat in chain retailers may make a difference to the generally very limited selection of Freesat equipment that is stocked. Also the 2 million figure must have been totally surpassed by now I would have thought. How much Freesat stuff was sold at Christmas is something that would be good to know. Getting Freesat boxes in the DIY sheds and German discount supermarkets would also be a good way to promote instead of the non Freesat FTA boxes that they flog at the moment.
Richard CrichtonQuote

2 million sales was 8th Sept that’s almost five months ago now. It must be more like 2.25 million or more by now.
Richard CrichtonQuote
January 27th, 2012 at 7:06 pm
Richard, post says well over 2 million sales, which is the only official figure I can “officially” use. We are well over that now.
adminQuote
January 27th, 2012 at 7:11 pm
Hi Guys,
Richard has made a very good point regarding Aldi / lidl, the boxes they sell are around the same price as official Freesat products & I know that they have a lot of problems with customers not understanding them as the are often preset for astra1 german stuff & dont auto update channel frequencies or have red button/ mheg 5 functions.resulting in returns & unhappy customers despite them offering a three year g’tee.
The target shoppers of these supermarkets have a similar profile to a large percentage of the Freesat customers.
Someone at one of the budget freesat brands could do very well by contacting & working with these supermarkets, or the people at the supermarkets suppliers (silvercrest / tevion) could commission a production run of freesat boxes for them to have badged for their brands.

To be honest, half the reason I switched to Freesat was so that I wouldn’t get all the junk channels that come with the free Sky service. I’d prefer most of these channels to remain off Freesat.
The only channels I’d really like to see added are Sky News and Dave.

That was answered by me just a few comments before yours, http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/encourage-fta-ftv-channels-to-join-freesat#comment-49147
Freesat, as with any platform cannot survive without a number of less important/exciting channels; just the way it is.
Sky are unlikely to ever pay for inclusion on the EPG of a direct rival. Dave is unlikely to come to Freesat for the same reason as why Quest won’t (link above).

No, reason being that Showcase (1) is available on Freesat and I assumed (rightly or wrongly) that the broadcaster is fully aware of Freesat and the potential viewing figures, so if they wanted to add, they would do. I’ve done the same by omitting all the +1 timeshifts too.

Why bother?? If you don’t want to watch a channel then just don’t press the three digits corresponding to it’s logical channel number! The more channels that join the platform, be them adult, religious or factual ones of interest, they all pay in to Freesat’s coffers which, as admin says, benefits us all in extra marketing and R&D revenue for the platform.
The more and more sales Freesat get, the more channels that will join and for me that’s only a good thing.

On a similar point I listen a lot to the radio stations (as do many others) through satellite because the quality is far superior to DAB and I am mystified as to why major stations like Real Radio, Magic and LBC haven’t joined the Freesat line up yet. Thankfully you can tune them in manually but not everyone is as dextrous in the frequency manipulation department. Perhaps Absolute radio could be encouraged to launch Absolute radio 70′s and 60′s on the Freesat EPG and tell Sky subscibers that they can tune them in manuallly instead of the other way around!
I think I’ll get a few e-mails off to some radio station suits.
spannersQuote
January 28th, 2012 at 9:28 pm
Agree there, more so for Real Radio considering Smooth is already on the platform. As Real is regionalised, only the welsh service is carried on Satellite. Kiss, Magic and LBC would all benefit from being on board the platform, £7k/yr EPG inclusion isn’t going to break the bank, even in radio terms!
NeilQuote
January 28th, 2012 at 10:36 pm
In fairness have there been any good FTA Sports channels on Freesat?
I’ve never noticed any but maybe I never looked hard enough.
To me that’s where Extreme is different. It doesn’t try to challenge the likes of the PFV sports channels by trying to compete with mainstream coverage as they presumably know they can’t win with that approach.
Instead Extreme, as the name suggests, concentrates on Extreme Sports – Surfing, Mountain Biking, Motocross, Free Style Motocross, Skating, Snowboarding, Free skiing, and BMX with the emphasis very much on Extreme competition or challenges.
As such it offers something fresh and different that appeals both to the thrill seeker market, the youth / young persons market and the older person who enjoys watching extreme sports. To me not only do I find the content appealing, but I think it also fits in well with Freesat’s existing content being a little bit less mainstream.
I think if anyone thinks Freesat is going to attract a major mainstream sports channel carrying premium sporting events then they’re sadly mistaken, at least whilst Sky is in the game with big money deals available. I very much think major sports will continue to fall within the BBC / ITV remit.
However, there maybe a chance in the long run of attracting something with more niche sports but that nevertheless has appeal to many, such as Extreme.

There sure was, even the German ones gave you something to watch when there was nothing on the UK channels! I think that was why Murdoch specifically wanted Sky’s Digital offering to be from a new orbital position so that he didn’t have to compete with German broadcasters for sports rights (plus the extra capacity).
Arthur: Argos TV is on the EPG, 819 I think??
I am amazed The Travel Channel isn’t on-board Freesat as of yet, surely they won’t want to be missing out on the potential viewers they are missing? Why don’t they just make it a Freesat requirement that freesat channels fall within the freesat bouquet and all FTA services will come at the end of the service list (e.g. 800+) and without event EPG info (unless broadcast in the clear). That way your many supporters will have the choice of watching even Sky News if they so wish. This selection of FTA services can make the difference between someone switching to Freesat and not. I doubt there would be any licensing agreements here because if they are broadcast unscrambled whats the problem, right?
On the Humax HDR I know there is an option of going from Freesat mode or ‘non freesat’ mode. Going to non-freesat mode means you lose all the channel numbering and EPG, and all the channel order is a complete mess.
I think it’s great that you are making the point about these other channels though, a definite step in the right direction.

Sorry Ian but I’m with the other poster here.
I never ever use non Freesat mode on my Humax because its too much hassle to change modes and if you do I believe the box won’t record in Freesat whilst you’re in non Freesat mode although Schedules are preserved.
I bought a large dish with a view to using DISCEQ with a multi-arm but never used it because of the switching problem.
I’ve long said, there needs to be some way of having a generic epg for non freesat mode and some way of switching between epgs without having to actually change modes or go into set up menus. A simple choice of epg when guide is pressed would be a better way.
Al (Original)Quote

Freesat have had to make it a little clumbsy in switching to encourage channels away from being just FTA, and paying for inclusion; you can’t blame them for that, but the Manhattan makes this easy as it doesn’t need to switch when you’ve added them to a favourites list.
Having said all that, I agree with the point you make about your PVR, which is an entirely different senerio to my comment which related to a simple FTA receiver which I took to mean an SD or HD box without additional PVR functionality.

All you can do to encourage Dave to join Freesat is keep contacting UKTV, but in reality the financials just don’t add up at this time as they make more from sub/advertising revenue on Sky than they would through advertising revenue alone on Sky/Freesat.
Should they be on Freesat? Ideally yes, but Freesat has a direct competitor in the well funded pay-tv service BSkyB, where as Freeview doesn’t, so it was never in doubt that they’d gain these channels.
If Freesat had a policy and the funding available to maybe offer the UKTV channels an incentive to join, balanced with receiver sales, then that might work, but unfortunately they cannot show favourism otherwise they’d lose more channels than they gain.

Hi Steve,
There could be many reasons for this including, the frequency that the missing channels are now on could be clashing with another local transmitter or the output channel of other equipment (vcr / dvd recorder / sky box even some freeview pvr’s) or if he has grouped aerial the new frequency could be out of group. & of course the aerial could have been damaged by recent storms or even have water inside the cable.
The Tv’s tuner could be faulty, you can check this by fitting another freeview tv or box there & see if you still have missing channels. to check for other equipment interferance take the aerial lead directly to the tv & retune.
Good luck.

This is a very interesting list – I emailed Disney channel earlier to ask why they won’t join Freesat – though I’m certain it’s a subscription channel.

Kind of puts that matter to rest then, certainly until Freesat sales figures are significantly more; isn’t really a surprise though; Sky have their claws in!

Disney is a subscription channel virtually everywhere in Europe – there is no chance at all of them joining Freesat. Out of several dozen channels on multiple satellites I can only find one that is currently transmitting in the clear – and that one is on an obscure Russian satellite!

The first thing to try with any problem is to pull the plug out of the wall socket, wait a minute then plug it back in again to alloww the box to reinitialise. You might get lucky, or the hard drive might be fritzed..

Don’t mean to be harsh but don’t think I want ANY of those channels on Freesat, they’re all rubbish! The only one I’d email about is DanceNation but their contact us link doesn’t work lol
For me, it’s got to be the usual Dave, FilmFourHD, Channel5HD thing … and a bunch of the ITV channels in HD too. But I know I know Sky have most of this contracted or it’s unconfirmed …
RichardQuote

Dance Nation announced last year that they would be on Freesat but for what ever reason failed to appear !
Same for some other channels including some from Freesat themselves.

Cant understand why the ITV regions aren’t in the EPG when the BBC regions are.
Adding these would bring the count of channels in the EPG to over 200.

ITV didn’t have the narrow beam bandwidth space available at the time. Now that has been resolved, I’d expect to see movement on them soon.
PS – Email me if you want to continue posting Shaun!!!

Reply from LFC TV:
Thanks for contacting Liverpool Football Club
At the moment our focus is on three platforms, Sky, Virgin and LFC TV Online.
FreeSat is not a platform we are currently looking to put LFC TV on as the growth of Freesat compared to Connected TV is slow and should we enter a new market, it is more likely to be the Connected one.
If this is to change then we will let our fans know.
Thanks for your continued support

People should try and focus on Discovery, specifically QUEST as its on freeview, and DMAX + 1, 2, the DMAX channels arent exactly successful, they could do with going free to view.

“Dear Angela,
Thank you for your email regarding Disney Channel and Freesat.
We appreciate your ideas and will forward them on to the relevant
department. Although there are currently no plans for a Disney Channel to
launch on Freesat at the moment this may change in the future. We hope you
continue to enjoy your favourite shows on Disney Channel.
Yours faithfully,

Hi this is the email I received from Disney channel – lets see if we can get them to Freesat soon.

Hmmm… I think Disney would only join Freesat once it has gone over 7 million as they make loads from Sky. More than some others I’ve heard.

feedback from Ch5HD:
Dear Al
Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding Channel 5 HD.
Although we do not have any current plans to launch this channel on Freesat, we are keeping the option under review for the future. Nevertheless, your interest in seeing it made available on this platform has been noted for the attention of all relevant personnel.
Thank you for your interest in Channel 5.

Hi all. Had a few replies from the channels I approached.
From Dance Nation
Thanks for the email.
Great to hear you enjoy Dance Nation so much.
We’re always looking to add more channels to Freesat so will certainly bear your email and request in mind.
You’re right Chart Show +1 will be swapped out for another channel, which we’re all busy working on, but I don’t have anything I can announce or share with you at the moment. Once we do we’ll be posting and tweeting about it. If you follow digitalspy I’m sure someone will pick it up.
Yours,
Will
And from UKTV
Thank you for your email.
We are afraid UKTV channels are not available on Freesat.
The only channels available for free are Dave, Really and Yesterday via Freeview.
We are committed to our Pay TV strategy and there are no plans to move any other channels to Freeview or Freesat at present.
We will however pass your interest in Dave being available on Freesat to the relevant UKTV team.
Kind regards
The UKTV Team
And from Channel 4 (regards Film4HD)
Thank you for contacting Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries.
We would love Film4 HD to be available on Freesat and all other broadcast platforms, but at the moment it is only available to Virgin subscribers. We
hope this will change in the future, so please keep an eye on the website below:
http://www.film4.com
Thank you again for taking the time to contact us here at Channel 4 and for your interest in our programming.

Interesting….. Sony TV have put this up yesterday on their Facebook page “Sony TV (UK) No news on Freeview or Freesat just yet Brian but we’re continuously looking at new platforms. We’ll let you know as soon as there’s any news. Thanks for your enquiry.” – At least shows interest and hasn’t ruled out the platform completely.
Keep posting on their page peeps and lets get at least one channel on freesat!!!…Maybe…

It would be nice for free-to-view encrypted channels via sky card to be available thru freesat to give the platform a boost.
anthonyQuote
February 13th, 2012 at 6:48 pm
That isn’t possible because Freesat (as a default) doesn’t have a decoder service, so can’t unblock the NDS encryption. In any case, there are only 3 channels, Pick TV, Liverpool FC TV and VIVA
adminQuote
February 13th, 2012 at 7:28 pm
Motorstv is also ftv encrypted via skycard. What the point of free-to-view encryption when you can get more viewers on a free-to-air unencrypted basis? It’s costly to encrypt and be on skys epg to exist on satellite with only free to view type viewers as your audience, when you can get more audience on a clear unencrypted free to view basis via freesat.
anthonyQuote

Regarding Quest TV, it is available Free on Freeview Channel Number 38,
so just get a cheap Freeview HD box if your TV does not have the Freeview service built-in, Quest TV+ is only available through a Sky Subscription
and is on Sky Channel Number 167

Freeview to me is awful picture quality with too much crammed in at the expense of quality, thus I have chosen freesat. I really want to watch Quest TV, VIVA and DAVE …. even REALLY … yes really
– Just can’t cope with the bad quality. I just don’t understand why UKTV doesn’t use DAVE as a showcase type channel on freesat in the same way they do for Freeview. Use it to advertise their pay channels and such. Same with MTV (VIVA) and Discovery (Quest) – these two would thrive on freesat being the only comedy/ music and documentary type channels on the platform.
I have heard the excuse that they are Pay, yeah that may be true, but by providing them for free on one platform, they have, IMO, undermined that.
Oh well, All this because I wanted to watch new Red dwarf on freesat! COME ON DAVE….JOIN US!!!!

I’ve contacted Motors TV and Viva with regards to dropping their encryption and becoming free to air or preferably becoming part of the Freesat epg but I am still waiting for a reply.
I’ve also contacted The Travel Channel to enquire whether they would become part of the Freesat epg in the future as they currently broadcast in the clear, but again, no reply as yet.
However, Liverpool FC TV and Channel 5 HD did respond but with a stock answer, remarkably similar to a previously posted response but a response never the less.
I know these channels may have a limited appeal but I’m thinking of areas where the Freesat offering can be widened to attract potential buyers with the emphasis on dedicated sports channels.
Unfortunately, in the case of Liverpool FC TV, they are looking at Connected TV as an option which I presume would require a subscription. So perhaps its days of being free are numbered?
