Encourage FTA/FTV channels to join Freesat

Encourage FTA/FTV channels to join FreesatInspired by a comment made recently, I thought it would be a good idea to produce a list of all fta/ftv channels currently available within the UK (astra2/eurobird1) that Freesat don’t have included in the EPG. Now obviously some of these channels may be classed as “less exciting” but as you may know, these channels would pay an annual fee for inclusion within the Freesat EPG (tv guide), which means money in the Freesat pocket for future growth, and an increased possibility of more good folk becoming Freesat viewers/customers to enjoy their fav channels.

All those listed as fta are “free-to-air” meaning there is no obvious reason why they couldn’t join Freesat, apart from willingness to pay up for inclusion. Those listed ftv are “free-to-view” meaning whilst they are not tied to a subscription provider, they are currently encrypted which requires a Sky viewing card and digibox. There may be more fta/ftv channels out there, but these are the ones found so far.

I’d encourage all of you to visit some of the web links to channels you may be interested in, then contact them (again using the links) to encourage them to join Freesat. Don’t forget that putting pressure on broadcasters and showing them there is enough interest is very important in the decision making process. I’ve not produced a template email to send because I feel individual unique responses would gain a better reaction, but don’t forget to mention things like how Freesat is free, readily accessible and already has well over 2 million sales (potential eyes watching).

Those key channels I’d recommend we definately focus on contacting would be the ftv ones, as more often than not they are looking for a way out of the encryption at the end of their contract (with Sky); these include Channel 5 HD, Sony Entertainment Television, Viva, Motors TV and LFC TV.

I’ve also included within the list a number of channels I deem “soft subscription”; what I mean by this is that these are high profile premium category channels (sports and movies) contracted to Sky within weak subscription packages, i.e. Entertainment Extra pack, not Sports pack or Movies pack, which assumes the revenue they gain from this is small in comparison, so over 2 million Freesat sales might start looking attractive. These channels include (sports) British Eurosport, Extreme Sports Channel and ESPN Classic, plus (movies) TCM and Movies 24.

  3. “Dear Angela,

Thank you for your email regarding Disney Channel and Freesat.

We appreciate your ideas and will forward them on to the relevant
department. Although there are currently no plans for a Disney Channel to
launch on Freesat at the moment this may change in the future. We hope you
continue to enjoy your favourite shows on Disney Channel.

    Yours faithfully,

    Disney Channels Customer Services”

Hi this is the email I received from Disney channel – lets see if we can get them to Freesat soon.

    Angela.

    Angela.

Hmmm… I think Disney would only join Freesat once it has gone over 7 million as they make loads from Sky. More than some others I’ve heard.

  5. is pop girl +1 and tiny pop +1 coming to freesat in 2012? also is TCM and Movies 24 coming to freesat in 2012?

Do you realise you ask the same questions over and over? No one will be able to confirm channels coming other than the broadcaster or when Freesat release the news.

  7. feedback from Ch5HD:

    Dear Al

Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding Channel 5 HD.

Although we do not have any current plans to launch this channel on Freesat, we are keeping the option under review for the future. Nevertheless, your interest in seeing it made available on this platform has been noted for the attention of all relevant personnel.

Thank you for your interest in Channel 5.

I got the exact same reply. Even down to the Dear Al bit!

  9. Hi all. Had a few replies from the channels I approached.

    From Dance Nation

    Thanks for the email.

Great to hear you enjoy Dance Nation so much.

We’re always looking to add more channels to Freesat so will certainly bear your email and request in mind.

You’re right Chart Show +1 will be swapped out for another channel, which we’re all busy working on, but I don’t have anything I can announce or share with you at the moment. Once we do we’ll be posting and tweeting about it. If you follow digitalspy I’m sure someone will pick it up.

    Yours,

    Will

    And from UKTV

    Thank you for your email.

We are afraid UKTV channels are not available on Freesat.

The only channels available for free are Dave, Really and Yesterday via Freeview.

We are committed to our Pay TV strategy and there are no plans to move any other channels to Freeview or Freesat at present.

We will however pass your interest in Dave being available on Freesat to the relevant UKTV team.

    Kind regards

    The UKTV Team

And from Channel 4 (regards Film4HD)

Thank you for contacting Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries.

We would love Film4 HD to be available on Freesat and all other broadcast platforms, but at the moment it is only available to Virgin subscribers. We
hope this will change in the future, so please keep an eye on the website below:

Thank you again for taking the time to contact us here at Channel 4 and for your interest in our programming.

And from Channel 5 regards their HD channel not had a reply yet 🙂

  10. Interesting….. Sony TV have put this up yesterday on their Facebook page “Sony TV (UK) No news on Freeview or Freesat just yet Brian but we’re continuously looking at new platforms. We’ll let you know as soon as there’s any news. Thanks for your enquiry.” – At least shows interest and hasn’t ruled out the platform completely.

Keep posting on their page peeps and lets get at least one channel on freesat!!!…Maybe…

  11. hi i have contacted sony tv and they said that continusly looking at new platforms and will be intouch soon i hope they do
i would like uktv to look at this aswell and listen to people who are looking to watch there channels .SOME NEW CHANNELS IN 2012 COME ON ……

  12. It would be nice for free-to-view encrypted channels via sky card to be available thru freesat to give the platform a boost.

  13. anthony said:

That isn’t possible because Freesat (as a default) doesn’t have a decoder service, so can’t unblock the NDS encryption. In any case, there are only 3 channels, Pick TV, Liverpool FC TV and VIVA

  14. Motorstv is also ftv encrypted via skycard. What the point of free-to-view encryption when you can get more viewers on a free-to-air unencrypted basis? It’s costly to encrypt and be on skys epg to exist on satellite with only free to view type viewers as your audience, when you can get more audience on a clear unencrypted free to view basis via freesat.

  15. i agree anthony also theres sony tv channel thats free on sky even if you dont subscribe .i hope this channel comes to freesat soon
come on freesat give us a boost

  16. Regarding Quest TV, it is available Free on Freeview Channel Number 38,
so just get a cheap Freeview HD box if your TV does not have the Freeview service built-in, Quest TV+ is only available through a Sky Subscription
and is on Sky Channel Number 167

Freeview to me is awful picture quality with too much crammed in at the expense of quality, thus I have chosen freesat. I really want to watch Quest TV, VIVA and DAVE …. even REALLY … yes really 🙂 – Just can’t cope with the bad quality. I just don’t understand why UKTV doesn’t use DAVE as a showcase type channel on freesat in the same way they do for Freeview. Use it to advertise their pay channels and such. Same with MTV (VIVA) and Discovery (Quest) – these two would thrive on freesat being the only comedy/ music and documentary type channels on the platform.

I have heard the excuse that they are Pay, yeah that may be true, but by providing them for free on one platform, they have, IMO, undermined that.

Oh well, All this because I wanted to watch new Red dwarf on freesat! COME ON DAVE….JOIN US!!!!

  18. I’ve contacted Motors TV and Viva with regards to dropping their encryption and becoming free to air or preferably becoming part of the Freesat epg but I am still waiting for a reply.

I’ve also contacted The Travel Channel to enquire whether they would become part of the Freesat epg in the future as they currently broadcast in the clear, but again, no reply as yet.

However, Liverpool FC TV and Channel 5 HD did respond but with a stock answer, remarkably similar to a previously posted response but a response never the less.

I know these channels may have a limited appeal but I’m thinking of areas where the Freesat offering can be widened to attract potential buyers with the emphasis on dedicated sports channels.

Unfortunately, in the case of Liverpool FC TV, they are looking at Connected TV as an option which I presume would require a subscription. So perhaps its days of being free are numbered?

  19. 5 HD may becoming to freesat in aprill or may of this year but not to freeview due to channel five sponsoring freesat in 2012 and they will want to maximise that

  20. I hav herd that 1 to 2 million freeview customers may have to come to freesat late 2012 early 2013 due to 4g interfearing with freeview boxes and 4g operators to stumped up for the customers whitch are effected so dave quest and yesterday and pick.tv and skynews will may be forced on to freesat and other platforms due to falling revenue on freeview platform and maybe challenge also

Channel 5 HD are still in contract until June/July so unlikely to appear earlier, plus their decision to not appear on Freeview has nothing to do with sponsership deals with Freesat.

Existing broadcasters on Freeview won’t be forced on to Freesat, they can’t. Some very unusual assumptions there, it has to be said.

  22. i e mailed uk tv and made it clear that i was not impresed about favoring freeviwe and sky over freesat and asked them to show the same respect that they shown to freeviwe to freesat as well they gave the same reply as a few of you had so no change there then

Beginning to wonder if their real strategy regarding freeview is to just block other channels from taking slots on behalf of sky (random and probs clutching at straws lol) Why else would a channel broadcast fta on one platform and not on another which involves next to no extra cost? And I was hoping the recent buyout of Virgin Media’s UKTV stake by Scripps would actually come to something good!!!

  24. DMAX is free to air in Germany, might be worth asking them pointing out this fact and also that being on freesat will boost the mediocre ratings stuff receives on their 3 channels a bit, enough to offset sub revenue at least.

  25. this is my reply from movies 24

At present we have no plans to bring Movies 24 to Freesat although it may be something we look at in the future. We hope you continue to enjoy Syfy Channel.

  26. It

Dmax may be free over there but is it in english though?

  27. Movies 24 is owned by Universal.

As Universal also broadcast SyFy, Universal, E! Entertainment and Style Network, all of which have been pay channels from day one (just like Movies 24) I think the odds of them joining Freesat are very slim 🙁

  28. The whole shame of these threads are, that there are virtually NO documentary/interest channels, like Discovery etc mentioned. This is down to both BBC and ITV really – they could easily have a channel not unlike ‘Yesterday’ on freeview (Which still falls short of being a true documentary channel, as it shows ‘Catherine Cookson’ dramatisations, Last of the Summer Wine etc). The wealth of documentaries, new and old but both the ITV/BBC and channel 4 (Secret History, Cutting Edge, Dispatches etc.) means they could seriously challenge Sky/Sky’s package – don’t know why they wouldn’t want to do this. Also BT Vision has a good ‘mix’ of films etc – apart from Film 4 on Freeview, there’s nothing like this on Freeview or Freesat. I think is very madly and badly missed by both the channels in question and a lot of the people who like these channels, normally, after coming off Sky (As I did – I’n not bothered anout Sport!)

  29. I recently (January 2013) helped one of my close relatives purchase a new tv – a Panasonic TX-P42GT50B – which has both Freeview and Freesat tuners built in and is supposed to be a smart tv except that the only catch up tv app it has is BBC Iplayer plus an Internet Browser that by luck currently supports ITV Player and old programs on C4OD from two or more years ago but not recent C4OD programs. Demand 5 unfortunately does not work at all in the Panasonic Web Browser and simply makes it lock up. So much for Smart Tvs and in January 2013 I found this to be pretty much a disgrace.

On the Freesat side of things life is a bit better though as although its not implemented by default when you set up the tv if you manually go to the Freesat menu and the non Freesat channels menu within that you can then do a scan which creates an additional input source of “other satellite”. You can then sub select from the channels scanned channels you want in your channel list and from that also create a favourites list which unlike the wretched Freesat favourites list can be sorted in to alphabetical order or any other order you fancy. The only downside is there is no EPG of any kind. How it is very easy to get in to this list by just pressing the TV button on the panasonic remote and you can even flip between a non fressat sat channel and a freesat channel or freeview channel by pressing the change to last channel viewed button.

Coming back to this thread well the impossible actually happened and Sky decided to add Sky News, Pick Tv and Challenge but annoyingly not PickTv+1 and Challenge+1, which surely at least says something about the regard which Sky News in particular (who have to work very hard to find new viewers due to their dry subject matter) hold the more serious minded Freesat audience in. Why did they not bother With PickTV+1 and Challenge+1? Was it really down to money. Or is it to stick two fingers in the air at Freesat viewers by reminding them Sky has these channels but that the service will still be inferior to that of a Sky box. Anyhow I added PickTv+1 and Challenge+1 in the Other Sat list favourites of the Panasonic but I know from a firend’s Humax box that using non Freesat mode on that is a complete and utter nightmare where hundreds of junk channels (Mosaic et al) are also stored. For some reason the Panasonic Other Satellite Mode is comparatively intelligent and doesn’t store any of those junk channels and all the junk channels with a black screen. It does however store a few FTV channels like Motors Tv even though I told it I only wanted FTA channels in the scan it did.

Lastly I see that Wedding Tv is no longer in the Freesat EPG. Unless my memory is very defective I could have sworn that it was on Freesat from its earliest days so if they have decided not to go on paying that is quite serious. Also still no C5 HD + the stupidity of ITV only putting ITV2 to 4 HD and their +1 equivalents on Sky encrypted simply makes my blood boil. Do they have a death wish or something by making a pact with Satan (aka Sky) which should surely be their deadliest enemy.

Also finally like many here I particularly cannot believe the Travel Channel not having an EPG listing on Freesat when it has always been FTA and is really one of the very best FTA channels available on the Astra satellite at 28 degrees East outside the main BBC, ITV etc offerings. Are Sky paying them to keep off Freesat or something? It really makes no sense to me. I can understand weird channels like Sumo Tv and My Channel not being on Freesat but I am mystified as to why the Travel Channel is not?????????

Unfortunately with the launch of YouView for Freeview but the joke Freeview Freetime for Freesat still not working for C4OD or Five and also not giving access to any pay channels for customers wanting to buy extra content away from Sky I think the game is more or less up for Freesat and I can only see it being saved by a takeover by You View and YouView then offering boxes with both Freeview and Freesat tuners as a kind of all out war by non Sky content providers on Sky and to a lesser extent Virgin.

… and fast forward 2yrs to 11th March 2014 and Pick +1 & Challenge +1 both finally make it to the platform! Better late than never!
