Freesat Awards 2012The stars of British broadcasting were recognised at a VIP gathering in London’s West End last night, as the winners of the 2012 Freesat Awards were announced – with Ant and Dec, CBeebies, Channel 4’s Educating Essex and 5USA among them.

A panel of media industry judges, chaired by journalist Neil Midgley, deliberated on the very best channels and programmes available on Freesat. Now in their fourth successful year, the Freesat Awards showcase the breadth of choice and quality of programming on offer on the subscription-free satellite TV service.

Actor and stand-up comedian Greg Davies, best known for his role as Mr. Gilbert in The Inbetweeners and his appearances on Mock the Week, hosted the event for a 250-strong VIP audience in London and announced the 2012 winners:

– Best Live TV Programme: This Morning (ITV1)
– Best Children’s TV Programme: Andy’s Wild Adventures (CBeebies)
– Best Niche TV Channel: QVC
– Best Digital Radio Channel: BBC Radio 1Xtra
– Best News Channel: BBC Radio 5 Live
– Audience Vote: Entertainment Show of the Year: Sherlock (BBC One)
– Best Digital Initiative: The Million Pound Drop (Channel 4)
– Breakout Channel of the Year: 5USA
– Best New TV Series: Educating Essex (Channel 4)
– Best TV Presenter: Ant & Dec
– Freesat Channel of the Year: CBeebies

Freesat Managing Director, Emma Scott said:

It’s been a truly outstanding year for British television and radio, and it is a real privilege to be able to recognise and celebrate the personalities, programmes and channels that Freesat viewers really love, including my personal favourite, Mr Drew on Educating Essex.

Neil Midgley, chair of this year’s judging panel commented:

The fact that Ant & Dec can be Freesat Award winners alongside Radio 5 Live, CBeebies, This Morning and The Million Pound Drop shows just how strong Freesat’s content is. It’s been such a pleasure to chair an awards process which focuses on the people and shows that viewers really love, and I’d like to join Emma in congratulating everyone who’s won an award. I’d also like to thank my fellow judges, who put so much time and expertise into choosing these worthy winners.

The Freesat Awards Ceremony was sponsored by Arqiva, Humax, Sagemcom and Samsung.

Is it about time the truth about award shows was disclosed. They are no more than a marketing exercise by program producers. Ant and Dec are so yesterday!

I don’t watch or listen to any of them. I doubt it reflects what the vast majority of Freesat viewers actually watch ! It would be interesting to know how many people use there Freesat boxes to listen to the Radio?

I believe it would be fairer if it actually reflected the thoughts of people who actually use Freesat, maybe we should be able to vote through this type of media ?

Awful choices, the only one I watched was Sherlock which was the viewers choice.

I never watch anything the panel gave the awards too. I think it was the same last year too.

Really goes to show just how out of touch these so called expert judging panels are.
I also ld be more than happy to bet that this panel, isn’t 100% Freesat users. So its more than flawed and doesn’t reflect what the reality is

Totally and utter nonsense. By the sounds of that post, you don’t even watch the content on the CBS channels.
Not to mention, if all we had on Freesat was BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1, Channel4 & Channel5, we wouldn’t have a Freesat at all…
If you had a proper awards show, voted for by the viewers & Freesat customers, you wouldn’t be making comments like that!!

Freesat channel of the year: CBeebies, thats got to be a joke? surely?!
What will win it next year? Playboy Chat?!

“- Freesat Channel of the Year: CBeebies”

Well, frankly, there are a hell of a lot of parents of young kids for whom CBeebies alone is worth the cost of the TV license.

Much as these things are just excuses for back-slapping, I say “Amen” to any award naming CBeebies as channel of the year.

CBS? Pfft! You’re having a laugh!

I watch Star Trek on CBS Action despite the low resolution. Guess I’m a Trekkie

CBeebies (and Andy) are worthy winners. So too is Sherlock.

Disappointed to see that Ant and Dec have won. My doctor will not let me watch them or Simon Cowell because it brings me out in a nasty rash.

Does all this mean that the same content will win the freeview/sky/virgin channel of the year awards ??????????????????
What a load of rubbish, are these bashes free to the VIP’s or do they pay and if so do any charities benift from the proceeds, if so they can have as many award bashes as they like but don’t tell me any results because they seldom include what I watch.

I’m not a fan of these type of awards either, but ultimately if they wish to celebrate the success of the platform once a year, that is fine by me.

As for attending, believe it is free by invite only; I receive one every year but the distance is too much for me for an evening.

Surely the “Freesat” awards should be voted by the general public whom have Feesat!

Would we expect MP’S to vote for the next Prime Minister for us, or Alex Ferguson to referee Man utd v Man city!

Saying that it was the general public who voted for a dog to win a talent contest, poor reflection on the talent in Britain or just a poor reflection of the general public you decide ?

Technically they do because they vote a leader for their party who by default becomes PM based on which party we vote for! (but I see your point).

Best “Presenter” was Ant & Dec, since when have they become one, or are they now in the same class as Jedward, certainly nearly as nauseating ! I’m a celebrity (well I had fifteen minutes of fame in 1974,or I know someone who’s famous, or i came last in come dine with me once) get me out of here!

    Sorry for the rant !!

Not sure why you commented on it then?!?! I don’t watch anything like those you mention either, but this programme didn’t have any association, just a shame they used “Essex” in the title really, as many will have missed it assuming it was a drama on credit card living young adults living the high life! It was a documentary about a public school…watched with my o/h as she’s a teacher!

    Good grief!

How predictably boring and inconsequential. Highlights just how far the “dumbing down” process of British television has gone.

Awards? Industries patting themselves on the backs and saying what great guys they are.

Sadly of course, the vast hordes of viewers who appear to be content to allow some of this content to wash over them, seem oblivious to how crass the majority of this is.

    Rant over……………………….
