What surpises me is that the BBC are not advertising this EVERY day in the build up. I have been hoping that it would be in HD, but this is the first confirmation of it. Surely something like this is a great incentive to get Freesat?

Excellent. Between ITV HD and their 4 HD football matches and now the BBC’s coverage of the 6 Nations in HD, the next 2 months are a HD boon for freesat viewers.

Why aren’t the BBC showing all the games in HD? How can anybody praise them, show them all or don’t bother shown any! They are shown them all in SD.

The BBC is not showing all the games in HD probably because the games not on the list above are not BBC productions. The missing games are to be played in Ireland, France and Italy.

Tony’s right – why on earth aren’t ALL the matches being shown in HD?
There’s little enough HD coverage anyway on BBC.
And as for ITV – their efforts so far are frankly pathetic.

Bob, how exactly are ITV pathetic? They show all their football matches in HD.

Not a rugby union fan myself but its good news that the BBC seem to be making an effort to increase their HD output.

When will we see match of the day in HD do you think ?

The current BBC Sport studios aren’t HD enabled.

The Sports department are moving to new HD studios in Salford in 2011.

Not a great rugby fan but this has to be good news. I’ll certainly take a look if only to spy the quality.

We get some good news for a change and STILL people come on here and moan…..well at least i’m pleased ! My glass is half full rather than half empty.

  15. Paul D Says:

Steve B, I totally agree with you. Do these people moan about everything in life?

We have been handed an entirely FREE service which gives us 6 nations in HD, all ITV football in HD, olympics in HD, wimbledon in HD, some good films like the fast and the furious tonight in HD etc etc etc and all people can do is complain. Just enjoy it people and watch it grow and get better and be proud that you invested in it at the start and helped it grow by advising people to get it rather than putting them off it.

Derek, does the studio need to be HD enabled (whatever that is) to actually show the matches in HD ? (as long as the matches are filmed in hd)

I wasn’t talking just about sport. You can’t deny that ITV’s overall HD output is pretty minimal. Until things improve there’s not much justification in buying a Freesat box – unless you are a football fan of course. I rarely bother turning mine on these days – but I will be watching the Six Nations Rugby!

the bbc dont produce the stream for matches in ireland france and italy. why would they??? some people just open there mouths sometimes and have at it. as for match of the day, i’m not sure that all the matches are actually filmed in hd. i think its only the ones that are live on sky.

Yes. Until they move to their new studios all BBC HD sport productions have to be 100% outside broadcasts. The only way they can now do HD highlight shows is as part of an OB. Think about Euro 2008 and The Olympics. All the highlights were produced as OBs in a temporary studio.

Sky have similar problems, they only have two HD equipped studios that are used by Sky Sports and Sky Arts. Some of their studios are only 4:3 as well.

This is why the highlights of the golf shown live in HD during the day, are broadcast SD/4:3 in the evening!!. Also Spanish football, received at Sky Centre in 16:9 is only broadcast in 4:3.

Like the BBC, Sky are building new HD studios.
