There appears to be quite some confusion on the web about how BBC iPlayer will be connected up and operate through your compatible Freesat HD receiver, so Freesat have put together a very nifty video guide to help once released to Freesat customers.
Please note that once beta trials have been satisfactorily concluded, the BBC iPlayer will be rolled-out on Humax Freesat HD Receivers first, followed by the rest shortly after.

I’m on the Freesat beta and my connection is via a Buffalo Ethernet Bridge to a Netgear 54Mbps wireless router. Configuring the Buffalo via my laptop was easy and the rest went smoothly. I would recommend the Buffalo as it has 4 ethernet sockets so my Xbox 360 and Blu ray player can connect up as well.

So it only works via red button on BBC1 not the other BBC channels? I doubt that somehow but could be wrong.

will be available on all hd boxes. The service is streamed not downloaded. So no retirement to have storage.

It says connecting but nothing happens but that’s probably because I updated my Technisat to the latest non iPlayer firmware today.

The iPlayer service is only available on Humax receivers at the moment; seems Freesat like to use them as their testbed!

I suppose it was inevitable the code would become public, but it’s a shame that the rest of us can’t take advantage of it, even now.
After all, it’s not really much of a beta trial if only one receiver has been tested. What about the rest?
Also, I must admitt to feeling a bit cheated: a resricted. invitation-only, beta trial isn’t quite the same thing as “launching in Autumn 2009″

Come on guys – let’s be sensible about this. It’s not a competition. We have recently experienced a host of problems with software updates screwing up our receivers, and a lot of people blamed it on the lack of pre-release testing and validation. The Beeb is trying to validate this new service before releasing it to the masses in time for Christmas, And what are we doing? Trying to be clever and screwing it all up!
For whatever reason, the Humax box is the only one with the iPlayer software ready to go, so only Humax owners can take part in the trial. Many of those boxes can record two channels at once while watching a third so surely you can wait another week or two to watch on-line repeats. If you screw up this trail so that the service starts late, you will only have yourselves to blame.

BBC i player team have have just posted to Digital Spy and I quote:
“We won’t be formally launching before Christmas – that will be some point in the spring as there’s a lot of work to do.
However before that we will make the access code more widely known – depending on how the initial beta test goes, this may be before, or after Christmas.
There’s a lot of new stuff involved with this iPlayer – no one has built such a service to a standard set top box/TV before; we’re creating video in a format iPlayer has never had to make video for (MPEG4 delivered in transport streams); and we’re doing all this over the open internet rather than a closed network like Virgin Media’s where such things can be better controlled. And there’s a lot more too! ”

The I-player option has been mentioned since Freesat launched in May 2008. whats taking these guys so long, are they still working on the Millenium bug ?
Ok rant over but i am getting mighty peed off with Freesat. 200 chanels by christmas 2008 (no). Chanel 4 by end of 2009 (no). I-player by christmas 2009 (looking increasingly unlikely)

So how does this version vary from that which is currently available on the WII (which works a dream)? Fail to see why Iplayer is such a ‘must have’ on the PVR, when a simple bit of planning suffices?

I hope the picture quality will be better than on the Wii – even the new iPlayer channel looks very poor in comparison to iPlayer SD via a PC browser.
(I think I read somewhere that the Wii doesn’t have the processing power to decode H264, so presumably Freesat SHOULD look much better – though following the BBC HD picture quality debacle, I guess that’s not guaranteed)

I use iPlayer on PS3 and it looks good but it will be more convenient to have it on the Freesat decoder and I’m hoping there will be HD content. Ability to download would be nice for those of us with PVRs but I don’t see that happening any time soon.

The picture quality is far superior to the Wii version – admittedly i only have a 32″ crt tv – but I can’t fault the picture quality.

#53 Rob H – if you’re still using a CRT, why have you paid the extra for an HD box? Presumably you can only input the sound and picture to your set via a SCART plug.

Dear Alan Thank you for contacting the BBC iPlayer Support Team. I understand that you would like to know when you can access BBC iPlayer via Freesat. As has been announced, the BBC is working on a version of the BBC iPlayer that will work on Freesat set top boxes. A closed beta version of this was launched at the end of November, however initially this is restricted to a small group of users whilst we test the service and the systems that run it. It is our intention to make the beta available to a wider audience in early 2010 and information on how to access the beta version will be made closer to the time. #55 Dan M Don’t you think Rob H is capable of answering these questions on his own? Without the “maybe”. I have used a Goodmans SD box for 16 months without a scrap of bother, during which time long running problems have seriously affected both the Harvard and Humax HD boxes. I would not rate my SD box as being inferior to Humax at the moment. Thanks for your interest.

I don’t have a LCD tv as She Who Must Be Obeyed picks up on the sometimes ropey picture quality on an LCD tv we’ve tried a few but the strange face movement that can be seen is seen too clearly by Mrs Rob and it gives her a headache! As the tech is constantly evolving we’re hoping the next gen will solve the problem and we can go HD!

Doesn’t it depend on the capabilities of the router? I though most routers worked out the pin assignments during the handshake with the device at the other end of the cable.
Surely Pat would be advised to try his existing cable before buying anything new. It will either work, or not work, without causing any damage.
