BBC have confirmed their intention to reduce the use of their DOG (digital on-screen graphic) on the BBC HD channel.

In an announcement today, Danielle Nagler, Head of HDTV at BBC Vision, said:

From this weekend, assuming no technical glitches in the areas responsible for implementing this, the BBC HD DOG will be removed from all films shown on the channel and the majority of the drama content. For other programming, we are turning down the DOG to the lowest level that we can while allowing it to remain visible.

In doing this, I’m aiming to make sure that at least some of the programming which really showcases HD quality and experience is DOG-free.

The BBC Internet Blog, where this news was published, often receive emails and messages from viewers requesting the reduction in logo opacity, as well as removing completely. A poll was also created on this very site, with 81% of you in favor of removing the DOG.

Good news all round and well done to the BBC for listening.

    great news
now can we actually have some footage worth watching ‘
at least plasma owners will be happy

  2. Paul Says:

Somebody tell channel 5. There new DOG is very annoying.

  3. zag Says:

Nice, great to see they are listening.

  4. Snoods Says:

Go Danielle Go! Thanks for listening! :)

  5. Michael Says:

This is progress and at least it shows the value of sites like this that encourage polls for consumer pressure. Some descreet dogs are ok like the now long defunct CMT (Country Music Television). Not only was it descreet but they also placed it on the bottom of the screen. Other channels please note!

  6. Paul Says:

DOGs wouldnt be too bad if they were actually in the corner but they cater for 4:3 aspect screens so on a widescreen TV they are always quite a bit in from the edge which makes it even worse.

Good to see that the BBC are listening.

and who said,” the bbc had gone to the dogs”

  8. Simon Says:

Well done to the BBC and joinfreesat, for taking onboard feedback generated from real people who use this site.

  9. admin Says:

We did point Danielle/BBC in the direction of our poll, but we can’t take credit for them listening, they no doubt had thousands of direct communication from viewers wanting rid of the DOG!

  10. Wouter Says:

You should see the US, that is really taking the P*ss. There, the DOG is way larger, full on, animation. What is completely rediculous in the US, is stating (for the entire freaking hour) “now showing . Or better (for the entire hour) “next .

    BBC, well done!!!

Good news indeed – and very encouraging to hear the BBC responding positively to licence payers’ views.

  12. Al Says:

agree with paul, about the 4:3 graphic settings its so annoying

Every channel could at least dim and resize them.(virgin: advertising terminator tscc, was enormous!)

i have a dream that when the end comes and everyone is digital, dogs will die as the epg tells us what were watching

  13. David H Says:

Thank you for removing the DOG. Now can we stop continuity announcers talking over credits. After watching some of the drama on the BBC, I need a quiet moment to reflect on what I have just watched. The credits give me that moment. Please don’t invade it.

  14. Mike K. Says:

l completly agree with David H, regarding talking over the credits.

  15. Colin Says:

Tonights BBC HD of Strictly Come Dancing
has the BBC Dog logo up,
and far worse many shots are not in HD
and the Grain is 10 times worse.

I have 2 TV’s one with it on HD and the other not
So when the grain is in the HD ch.
I check the normal TV – no grain

I know the BBC said it could not do Sundays show due to not enough HD shots
but this saturday show is bad due to the Non HD shots.

ITV HD has had problems but at least the whole prog.
    is in 1080i HD.
