Not to be missed! Britain From Above, a new documentary hosted by Andrew Marr which begins Sunday 10th August at 9pm on BBC HD and BBC One.
An epic journey revealing the secrets, patterns and hidden rhythms of our lives from a striking new perspective.
Join host Andrew Marr as he discovers how each and every one of us is interconnecting making Britain what it is today.
Britain looks very different from the skies. From a bird’s eye view of the nation, its workings, cities, landscapes and peoples are revealed and re-discovered in new and extraordinary ways.
Cutting edge technology allows you to see through cloud cover, navigate the landscape and witness familiar sights as never seen before.
We have been lucky enough to see a preview of this in high-definition and it was nothing short of stunning, the best we’ve seen from BBC’s high-definition service so far. Do not miss it.

I’ve watched a couple of the short clips on the beebs website - like the gps tracked taxis and flight paths. Even in the iPlayer format these short clips were simply stunning, certainly looking forward to this in HD!
Now if only the beeb were to film Top Gear in HD my Sunday evening would be dedicated to one channel!

So what is the general opinion of the programme? Thought the quality was excellent, and the show itself very interesting. A massive well done to BBC, looking forward to next week already.

I have to disagree with you here. Whilst the picture quality was great (I watched on normal BBC and even that looked impressive), the program itself was extremely boring, just full of traffic stats etc. I soon lost interest.
Now “Coast” in HD would be something worth seeing!

I thought it was pretty good, and the images were quite spectacular; an excellent advert for HD. I do wonder, however, if it might have been better in an earlier time slot for family viewing (my kids would have enjoyed it*). After all, the programme was presented in an easily accessible way and (though this is not a criticism) lacked the rigour that you might expect from a factual programme aimed at a primarily adult audience. All-in-all, though, pretty good.

*They’ll have to make to with an SD recording.

I thought it was great but was puzzeled by the femal voice interjections. Then it clicked, Audio Description; now disabled, but if you need it, it is very good.
Well done BBC.

While I did enjoy the 9pm BBC1 programme and thought it looked fantastic (even watching it in SD), I found the 10pm BBC2 spinoff (confusingly also called “Britain From Above”) on the history of the City, the RAF aerial imagery survey just after the war and the plans for completely rebuilding London that were (thankfully) never put into place much more interesting than the main BBC1 programme. It also showed visualisations of the ugly new skyscrapers that are going to “grace” the London skyline in the near-future and how architects like Richard Rogers work around the planning laws that protect the sightlines of St Paul’s from different parts of the city.
It’s a shame that it wasn’t in HD too, although given that it had less helicopter aerial imagery in it I guess it wouldn’t have benefited as much.
