It has been confirmed today that Portugal’s Euro 2008 game against Turkey will be the first publically available HD broadcast from the new ITV HD service.
To access the HD channel, you need to press the ‘red’ button during the SD broadcast on ITV1 (channel 103). ITV HD will not be available on Freeview, Virgin or Sky.
It has also been confirmed that in addition to Portugals game on Saturday 7th (7.30pm), that games on Monday thro Friday of the following week will also be available in HD.

Excellent start for ITV HD, look forward to much more HD material, I think they need to advertise this more as well.

LIB I certainly hope so, I would think that the Silverstone race will be likely.

(Portugal v Turkey) Saturday 7th June on ITV 1 from 7:15pm to 10:00pm.

Hopefully their transmissions will have a high enough bitrate, otherwise their HD broadcasts will be pretty much pointless.
Their SD broadcasts look terrible compared to BBC’s.

I think the BBC should also go down the red button route. There’s no point repeating old programmes over and over. As for F1, I dont think you will see it in HD until the Beeb get the rights next year.
June 4th, 2008 at 9:28 am
I would like to think the BBC’s HD material will increase rapidly, so the repeats will decrease over time. I’m getting the Freesat PVR on launch, so will be happy to watch all the BBC HD material straight away.

If it was me ild be screaming this from the rafters, adverts the lot, Freesats PR company is inept they will keep it a closely guarded secret as long as possible. the pull of HD football is massive just ask sky. How many new hd telly’s we sold when the world cup was on. If they miss this opportunity we will all know why ITV is going to the dogs.
June 4th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
How will red-button HD programs be recorded on the PVR units (when they’re released)? Will it only be possible to program an HD recording in advance if it’s on a separate channel?

Seems the BBC are showing the football in HD too checking the schedule for next week - shame they’re not covering Queens Club tennis in HD too tho
oh well can’t have everything lol - it does seem they’re slowly increasing what’s available though - unless I’m mistaken shows like Gavin and Stacey weren’t on there last time I checked.

DOn’t quite understand the ‘red button’ system.
Does this mean that ITV HD is not transmitted on a separate channel?
Can you receiive it via a manual tune on an FTA HD box ?

ITV HD Content
Some of the footy that was on ITV HD previously has screen grabs on this flickr page. You can see HD and upscaled grabs in the ITV HD sections. They look good.

Does Freesat have a “RED” button? I have been trying to watch the French Open but the “Press i” button does not have BBC i.
I can get it on the Sky box OK.
June 6th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Hi Anne, that’s a very good point. I’ve just checked and no, the freesat version has no way of accessing the extra content (as far as I can see). The freeview / sky versions of the menu you get when you hit the RED button on BBC give you an extra content menu (in this case tennis/cricket).
On my freeview set I can select channels 301/302 manually and see the content but even after a ‘non-freesat’ search on the Humax box I can see no direct channel or any other way of getting to it.
Surely the BBC will add access to this content on freesat eventually as it’s already available on sky and I’d have to say it’s a very important part of the interactive service.
June 6th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
Sorry just to clarify the above - my freesat (Humax HD box) does have the RED button feature available on the BBC but it just doesn’t seem to carry the extra content that the freeview/sky version has.

ITV HD is availabe to anyone within the footprint of the Eurobird 1 satellite at 28.2′E (28.5′E). This includes most of Europe, North Africa and even parts of Greenland, asuming you have a big enough dish.
Eurobird 1 is one of five satellites that are all at the same position in the sky so your dish knows no difference. According to data a dish of 50cm is good enough for the most northern tip of Scotland.
In practice there is no knowing what the signal will be like and will vary the further away from the ‘centre/strongest’ of the transmission footprint.
Take a look here . .

Good luck . .
