Comet remove Grundig freesat receivers from website “Hauppauge WinTV won’t work”, claims freesat
Apr 21

No sooner had Comet removed the freesat products from their website, John Lewis have removed all information of freesat from their site too, and are no longer offering any information on the new service at this time.

Do we sense an update to the official freesat website very soon, or are we about to experience another delay?

i have just spoken on live chat on comet and was told the reason they were not there now is they have sold umm.

  3. gaz Says:

sorry meant to say sold out.

We have subsequently spoke to Comet, who stand by the reason being they’ve sold out. Coincidence that both products sold out at exactly the same time? They continued to say that items only remain on the site as ‘out of stock’ if they have a good idea of next available stock, but they don’t on these products. We ask if they will be selling Humax receivers too, all they could say was that they are trying to get hold of some.

John Lewis pulled the info the same day it was put on… I saw your post regarding it on the day, yet never actually saw the info on the JL site.

I visited John Lewis Southampton yesterday and spoke with the manager and deputy manager of the Sound & Vision department.

They told me they attended a John Lewis Freesat briefing last Friday which confirmed a product launch date of Tuesday May 6th (Monday being a Bank Holiday).

They told me there would be two HD receivers for sale on launch day, the Humax unit and a Thomson (???) unit. I asked if I could reserve a unit. The units appear on their system but are non-reservable at present.

If anyone is interested, the John Lewis code for the Humax HD box is 858 08001

The manager stated that they expected to receive stock very soon ahead of the 6th May.

Oh, almost forgot, the JL bods also muttered something about the purchase price of the box including a visit from an “engineer” to check your existing setup and signal strength.

If you require full installation, that attracts the £100 charge.

I paid a visit to the John Lewis store in Oxford St London this morning. Chap there said they were in still in discussions with Freesat about the launch date. He said end of June probably… I nearly fell off the chair when I heard that.

John lewis have just been contacted by freesat to not give out release dates as they are scared of sky doing aggresive marketing to put down freesat. Prob the same with comet and thats why the stuff has been taken down

Here in Cornwall we go digital next year (2009). Was quoted £250 for new aerial on a high pole, (over a hill so signal strength poor) + digibox and installation. Left my email address on the BBC/ITV Free Sat wesite for info as it happens but haven’t received any. Tomorrow I’m having Sky Free Sat installed, (£150) but would have preferred the BBC/ITV version if it was available as my sister has had problems with her Sky Free Sat installation.

I cancelled my Sky subscription yesterday, although Sky were very unhappy about letting me go, and gave me what I think was misinformation about their Freesat service (said I didn’t need a Freesat card, and that my existing “cancelled” card would work fine - so I expect I’ll end up with little or no telly at all in a month’s time!) - so I don’t think they are really going to be aggressively marketing anything that they can’t make money on. I’m sure they would much rather have people pay them a monthly subscription than a one-off fee that just covers the box and installation.

Incidently, Sky do offer Satellite for Life (Pay Once Watch Forever) at £75 in Comet etc. Not sure what the catch is though (whether they make it particularly difficult to downgrade after the 4 months of entertainment are up).

  13. Mark Says:

Out of interest Lucy did Sky offer you any inducement to stay with them?

  14. Lucy Says:

No, Mark, not at all. They try to get me to not cancel by pointing out that I wasn’t on their cheapest subscription offer, etc. I’ll wait with interest to see whether my card still works in a month’s time.

I heard from my local shop that a big consignment of Humax Foxsat recorders were stolen from a lorry recently. Could this be the reason for the delay?
