We have today been told by the BBC that the launch date is expected to be Monday 5th May through those retailers previously mentioned, and updates will happen on the official site within the next week or so. They have however suggested that whilst the 5th is the date they are aiming for, if the service is not ready, or if there is still issues to iron out, they have no problem delaying it (again!). Whilst its incredibly frustrating for freesat to be so cagey with its dates, especially as this has gone on for over a year, we all have to agree that we want a fully working service from the off, thats been fully tested and working, so the wait might just be worth it. We’ll keep you all informed.

Just a note to say thanks for such a useful website – that gives more answers than I am seeing anywhere viathe official routes. As we can only get 5 channels and no freeview I cannot wait til Freesat comes along – especially with the recording functionality!!

andy – there are a range of generic receivers out their capable of picking up the FTA (free-to-air) channels. The advantage of the freesat platform is that it has a full EPG etc which allows you to move through the channels and programmes easier, without having to do manual updates as and when channels move around etc. Not only this, but generic receivers tend generally to have weak tuners, so if you are intending use outside the UK, you may struggle (but you may also struggle with freesat receivers, we don’t know the strength of them yet)

Thank goodness for Freesat! I’ve just spotted this website this evening and as someone who has been watching BBC HD on a European Humax HD receiver plugged into my sky dish since the world cup HD broadcasts, can I just say about time too. Hopefully this will give Sky a bit of much needed competition and provide the perfect platform for more free HD TV. Now if only Eurosport could be persuaded to come on board I’d be over the moon.
