1. footy Says:

New to this, the Humax foxstat was turned on out of standby, automatic update-brilliant. Actually I did not see it, my wife said it was called re-tune.

2. Prison Warden Says:

Another shopping channel. Just what we need :-(

3. Glyn Smith Says:

I asked the following as the last post of the last update scan, but guess the thread wasnt getting any more traffic, so here goes again…
Does the Hummy indicate when non-freesat channels are added, or is that a manual scan only?

4. Stevejp Says:

It may be a shopping channel but it does mean more money going into Freesat which can only be a good thing

5. Jim Says:

I don’t know about others, but I’m really disapointed with Freesat, I gave away my Humax Freeview PVR for a Humax HDR when they came out at the end of last year to find the only channels we get are shopping channels.
Freeview has better channels with Dave, Virgin 1, Five US, and The History Channel all of which are unavailable on Freesat. HD content is nothing to write home about either with BBC HD only on part of the day and ITV HD hardly ever available!

6. Paul Says:

@Jim – ” HD content is nothing to write home about either with BBC HD only on part of the day and ITV HD hardly ever available!”

Couldn’t disagree more. There are quality programmes on BBC HD from 6pm to 12pm, the time most people watch it and ITV HD via the red button has films and everytime there’s a live footy match being covered on ITV1.
It will improve when the ITV comes online as a stand alone channel and when Channel 4 HD joins FreeSat.

7. Dean smith Says:

Shopping channel. wow . Why bother telling us that, it just depresses us.

8. ChrisA Says:

I think we have to look at the additions to the Freesat guide to date in context – which is since launch, the commercial broadcasting sector has been struggling with very low advertising revenues due to the recession. Free to air commercial channels which therefore inherently rely on this advertising revenue have therefore not had the spare £30k available to justify getting added to a guide only around 500,000 people currently have access to.

Things seem to be getting better, but there will always be the lag between the general economic situation improving, to advertisers starting to spend on television advertising again, and that money therefore making it viable for channels to launch on a platform that currently has a very small footprint compared to the likes of the Sky, Virgin or Freeview EPGs. The lack of available space on 2D for UK targeted broadcasts only further complicates things, as we have seen in the case of C4HD recently.

As things improve and Freesat gains a stronger market presence – thanks mostly I predict to being included as standard on newer HD TVs – the channels and content will follow, but it will take time, especially as BSkyB have so many channels on the satellite platform locked into encryption contracts yet remaining available to their 10m or so customers…

9. Saltydawg Says:

I keep reading that there’s no space for channels but we find room for another crapola shopping channel?

10. gordon b Says:

grundig box updated ok for three mins then no sound try to change chanell completly stops working tried reeboot does the same again

11. Briggsy Says:

Anyone had problems with their freesat GFSAT200HD units rebooting repeatedly today, turned it on after getting home from work today and it showed download had been done ok…

Less than 3 mins later it constantly rebooting every minute continuously.

Hence I powered it down and switched on sky!

Left it for 15 mins and powered up -all appears to be fine again now – software techies playing again I suppose!!

12. Liz c Says:

Hello, my freesat box has stopped working after an update. Could someone kindly tell me how to do a first install again as I can’t remember. Thanks

13. GaseousClay Says:

@ Glyn Smith
Does the Hummy indicate when non-freesat channels are added, or is that a manual scan only?
The box will only prompt you for freesat channel updates, non-freesat channels will only get added should you perform a manual retune.

@ Saltydawg
I keep reading that there’s no space for channels but we find room for another crapola shopping channel?
The channels are not taking up space on the epg. These channels already exist on the satellite transponders and it is the lack of space here that prevents other channels to transmit from said satellite. The channels are simply being added to the freesat epg and are not taking up any more space than they have previously

14. Glyn Smith Says:

GaseousClay – thanks for your answer. Now I’m left wondering the following. Everytime the Hummy re-scans channels because of a ‘Freesat’ update, does it include non-Freesat? Probably not. My second question is, does a resource exist anywhere, advising on non-freesat updates? similar to the way we now get Freesat channel updates on this site. I know all about lost schedules, but as I bought the box at launch, imagine my non-freesat line-up is long out-dated?

15. Rodders Says:

Reference the October 13th (is that a bad omen) download, it has caused my Bush HD box to loose sound every 1~2 mins, the picture will jump and every 2~3 mins the box will turn itself off and then on again. All for the sake of another shopping channel and I think slightly improved graphics on the now/next menus and the programme guide.

I assume Freesat will correct this immediately as it has made my investment in Freesat unuseable. There are some great programmes on BBC HD and a few on ITV why should I have to loose these channels?

Come on Freesat GET IT SORTED.

16. stevec7747 Says:

My Bush HD has also been crippled by this latest down load and turns on an off all the time. Does anyone know how to do a hard reset or cause a reload of the software. A firdt install fails to cure the problem.

17. blue 1963 Says:

my goodmans hd keeps switching itself on and off. and also keeps saying no signal i disconnected it and reconnected it its still doing the same thing. even after a first time install ? i dont know what else to do

18. Mark (North Wales) Says:

@stevec7747
My Bush HD has also been crippled by this latest down load and turns on an off all the time. Does anyone know how to do a hard reset or cause a reload of the software. A firdt install fails to cure the problem.

** My Bush HD doing exactly the same **

19. admin Says:

Alba/Harvard Group, responsible for the Grundig, Goodmans and Bush brands are aware of the problem and have said when speaking to them that they expect to resolve within 2-3 working days. We’d urge you all with problems to contact them to get this pushed through.

20. derek500 Says:

@ Saltydawg. There’s lots of space left on Astra/Eurobird sateliites but only on the pan-European beams. Shopping channels etc. don’t have any copyright issues.

For the main UK channels to be FTA they need to on the tight UK focussed beam 2d, which is at capacity.

21. Prison Warden Says:

Admin. Sorry its off topic but what is the USB port on the rear of the Foxsat box for.My guess would be iplayer downloads. Please confirm.

22. Arthur Says:

Where did the Audi channel go guys??

23. Brettski Says:

I have another question on rescans since we’re all going slighly off topic! Before I sit down and delete all the rubbish out of non-freesat mode to leave only the decent stuff e.g. Sky News can anyone confirm whether these deleted items will all reappear if I rescan again in the future. Using Humax-HD.

On related item, is there a list of what non-freesat channels are avaialble (ie not encrypted)

24. Prison Warden Says:

@Brettski, They will unless you use manual scan using transponder details that you put in yourself.

List of channels etc here: http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html

25. Glyn Smith Says:

ADMIN – are you able to get an answer to my questions in post 14, before it becomes buried? ta

26. admin Says:

@Glyn Smith

A Freesat receiver only re-scans Freesat channels on the EPG, not the hundreds of FTA channels in non-Freesat mode.

Not sure of the best resource for FTA channel updates as we focus on Freesats offering only, but try http://www.flysat.com/28east.php, it has a full list and they add updates in frequencies, additional channels etc.

27. blue 1963 Says:

{comment 19} sent them an e-mail the reply was[ updating again ] in the next two days .so in the meantime ive gotta suffer?

28. Andy Wellings Says:

well Yer another shopping channel,Lets have some Great News bring on FIVER and FIVE USA im still waiting for these channels to come on board please

29. Kevin McFarlane Says:

@Jim 5, you mean you didn’t check the Freesat channel availability before giving away your Freeview PVR???

30. Mark Says:

Email from Five this morning:

With regards to FIVER and Five USA, unfortunately, due to a lack of narrow beam capacity, we are unable to make these channels available on Freesat at the moment. However, we are exploring options to secure capacity to enable these channels to join Freesat at some time in the future but cannot provide a date at this time.

31. Batfink Says:

My Goodman GFSAT200HD, updated last night and not worked since. It keeps turning of and on then freezes completely. Email from goodmans saying wait 2 days for updates to complete. Cant even turn the box on to receive updates.. What am I suppposed to do.. Any one have any ideas..

32. admin Says:

@Batfink

Not much you can do unfortunately until they resolve :(

33. Chay Says:

The latest download left my Bush box frozen in standby and the only way to get it working is to totally switch off and restart. So far two further standbys have resulted in a frozen box so I suppose I shall have to leave it on all the time.

34. Alex Says:

any news if were going to have iplayer or CH4HD before christmas?
If not, i may have to invest in a cheap sky package as the christmas deals come out with them then. :S

35. Paul Cooper Says:

My Bush Freesat HD keeps rebooting every 2 mins when watching ITV / ITV HD tonight, really spoilt my football viewing tonight, cant watch it at all now as the box is just rebooting constantly and the signal for terrestrial is not available on my freeview box for ITV – how crap is this?

HELP please

36. Derek Says:

My Bush BFSAT01HD updated last night and now it turns off and on about 4 or 5 times and then freezes on a black screen with a box at the bottom showing the words ‘Data Only’. Only way to get out of this is to unplug from mains and start again, then it goes through the same again untill it freezes – Why can’t they just leave my operating system alone? lets face it, it was working well before this so called update.. Now what do I do?

37. Fran Says:

At least I am not the only one who seems to have had their Goodmans Freesat box nuked by the latest software download. Anyone got any idea how to fix it? Or are the techies working to debug it and we just need to wait for another update? It’s areal pain though because freeview round here is a poor signal.

38. GaseousClay Says:

@ Prison Warden

Admin. Sorry its off topic but what is the USB port on the rear of the Foxsat box for.My guess would be iplayer downloads. Please confirm.

If it’s the non-pvr foxsat the USB port is just for firmware updates.
If it’s the foxsat recorder then it can be used to transfer recordings to and from a seperate Hard disk drive or a usb flash drive.

The iplayer, when it becomes available, will use the ethernet port on both recordable and non-recordable foxsat devices.

39. Prison Warden Says:

@GaseousClay. It’s the non pvr foxsat. But firmware updates are done over the air.
I thought iplayer shows could be downloaded and watched for a week not just streamed. Hence the need for a storage device via the usb port.

40. admin Says:

@GaseousClay

The USB port is part of the original spec; there is nothing to suggest it will be used for anything just yet.

41. GaseousClay Says:

Software update via USB host
Copy the software to the usb memory stick and connect the usb to the receiver. Press the standby button and turn off the power. To power on, press the standby button while switching on the receiver to start software update.
@ Prison warden

Software updates are done over air but the usb is also available for this purpose.
Further more the foxsat is not capable of displaying stored files such as iplayer downloads so you will only be able to stream content via the ethernet port.

regards

GC

42. Prison Warden Says:

@GC thanks for the info. The foxsat is not capable of storing iplayer downloads as things stand at the moment but we are expecting a firmware update to enable iplayer functionality so things could change-hopefully:-)

43. JWhit Says:

We have had freesat for just over a year and our box has started switching itself onto standby every 5-10 mins, loosing sound, picture hanging or screen going blank. Thought our box had broken (handy just outside the warranty period) but reading some comment looks like other people have the same problem. Please let me know if this is due to the update scan 13/10/09 or if it is a faulty box as am going Argos today to buy a new one.

44. GaseousClay Says:

@ Prison Warden
I wouldn’t set your hopes up too much. It’s been confirmed on a forum by a Humax employee that even the recording foxsat will only stream iplayer and won’t be able to store downloaded media from iplayer.

45. Prison Warden Says:

@GC That’s disappointing :-(

46. BiRNiT Says:

One thing keeps coming to mind over this bodged update, and that is don`t these guys beta test them, before releasing them to the general public?, makes you think what type of company we are dealing with. Why is there no way to fall back to a previous firmware/update?, would have kept everyone happy until this was sorted.

47. Bob Martin Says:

Hi Guys

I have been getting a lot of bad signal problems on my humax and I have replaced the Lnb checked the signal it is fine for about an hour then it all starts again. The problem only started after the big re-tune on Freeview? Co-incidently my freeview on the telly is also inconsistant on BBC 1? I have thought maybe it is the RF Lead going to the sat but as this is internally hidden in between the cavity’s on our house I am a little reluctant to replace it as it has never gave problems before and nothing has been touched? Have you had anyone else having these sort of problems as I think it is related to the changes on the terrestrial tv signals as it worked fine before this? I look forward to your reply by the way my postcode area is dd8 2jy?
Bob Martin

48. Bob Martin Says:

Hi again Guys/Ladies

Re 47

I Forgot to mention it is not the reciever as I have checked on another reciever just a normal free-to-air sat box but this acts in exactly the same way works fine for a little while then starts bad signal situation I have also checked for spiders webs etc on the dish and there does not appear to be any trees moving in the wind either in the path line? I wonder if after reading the letters regarding “Software Update Causes Mass Box Failure” if this is relating to the humax box now as well? By the way my one is not the PVR type but is the high definition version one though.
Bob Martin

49. Batfink Says:

RE: Goodmans GFSAT200HD
This is the reply I received yesterday from Goodmans Customer Service:

Since Goodmans are aware of the problem & they are working hard to resolve the issue, when we have a fix we will release this via a OAD” (Over Air Download) to sort out the issue. You can provide us with you phone number so that we can inform you when this happens or else we will mail you.

Seems like they are on the case.. I shall provide updates as soon as I hear…

50. GaseousClay Says:

@ Bob Martin

Turn off or move your dect telephone and/or your broadband router see if that improves the situation.

51. Andy Says:

It’s appauling that an untested firmware update has been allowed to be broadcast. The majority of Freesat boxes probably are Bush, Goodmans or Grundig as these are not only the most readily available but most reasonably priced. All I can say is that I hope they release an update to remedy this fault asap and then I’m turning off auto update!

52. Bob Martin Says:

Re CaseousClay

Hi I tried this it did not make any difference but thanks anyway, the thing is nothing has been touched ie the dect phone has always been there and the router has always been where it is as well? I only replaced the Lnb as I suspected this was failing but as it is the same problem then the old one is probably still ok as well? The only thing it could be now is the dish or the RF cable but it is weird that it works for ages then starts to break up? So thanks anyway it may be as I said earlier the software update?

53. Prison Warden Says:

If you buy a cheap box you get what you pay for. There is no substitute for a quality product by a manufacturer with a good reputation.

54. teedee Says:

when is the bodged download to be fixed.. i now have a useless goodmans freesathd. time they got some bad press. nothing is mentioned anywhere of this and no apology.. had to really search to find this forum.. many thanx for the information
terry

55. ken dobson Says:

Phone Harvardplc the parent company and ask to speakto Paul Cornwell . T he number is 02082387650. Also berate Freesat for their poor support in this matter. They are still advertising the freesat boxes on their webpage . Who is paying their wages I wonder!!!????? They certainly don’t seem concerned about all of us without freesat!!!!

56. teedee Says:

phoned harvard but got fobbed off so then called grundig same treatment…… so called harvard again once past snotty bird on reception got tech support guy who would not listen and just said keep waiting for a few more days for a OAD update” would take any notice of the fact that the f….in thing will not stay on long enough for an update to download.. bloody awful state of affairs now had no freesat since update on 13th

57. ken Says:

Teedee
Sorry to hear about your problem….Was P Cornewll no help??? Try the commercial director Mark Neave at the above telephone number. He was very sympathetic and sorted me out..good luck

58. teedee Says:

thanx ken,, harvard are now collecting unit monday.. say they are going to attempt software updae. but say they may have to replace the unit. but say my grundig would be swapped for a goodmans unit
not sure i want that as my unit is small black and fits perfectly under my panasonic telly..

59. Chazzer Says:

@ admin

Admin, there was another update scan today, noting
0 Channels added
0 Channels removed
8 Channels changed
I cannot see what changes there may have been, could you please advise via your usual means?

60. Batfink Says:

My new Goodmans unit arrived yesterday via courier. Great Service, however, when I plugged it in it came up straight away with signal strength of 85 -89%, when I started to perform a scan it said scan failed and no channels were found… STILL NO FREESAT TV. This is really annoying me now…

Anyone had a similar problem with Goodmans GFSAT200HD

61. teedee Says:

my old and knackered set ( gufsathd01) was picked up by courrier from harvard on monday and wednesday a new gufstahd200 was delivered. bloody excellent service EVENTUALLY. set up and is working fine.. just waiting for next update to f**k it up

62. easybeans Says:

tryin to install my freesat box, have 90% signal strength, but fail to pick up anything on a scan, what’s going wrong?

63. teedee Says:

are we in the midst of yet another freesat f**k up.. new download today failed.. and thats non my new harvard supplied goodmans hd freesat box.. any one else having probs..
