Welcome to joinfreesat.co.uk. The intention of this blog is to provide information on the new BBC/ITV freesat satellite TV service due soon. You’ll no doubt have plenty of questions regarding the service, and we hope to answer them as and when information becomes available. Above you’ll find our first meaningful blog, a faq based on the existing knowns about the freesat service.
So why create a blog? Thats easy, freesat is a joint venture between the BBC and ITV. This service ‘will’ (despite being ‘not for profit) go in direct competition against the existing satellite tv service from Sky. The only trouble with this is that neither BBC/ITV nor Sky will make direct reference to each other in their promotions, which in turn means confusion reigns supreme. We have no such morals or legal implications (or hopefully not anyway!).
Enjoy, and welcome to probably the more conclusive freesat blog you’ll find, from experts within the industry.

With the upcoming launch of freesat, when will the PVR boxes start to appear in the market place. Considering a possible launch is due in Spring 2008 (which I’ll optimistically take as meaning March!) surely information should start to appear soon?

Hi David, no indication has been made into whether the PVR digiboxes will be available from launch, but it is claimed that manufacturers like Humax are not ready yet. I suppose it will come down to launch date, and whether that is March as you mentioned, or further on in the year when C4′s existing contract is finished!
HD PVR from launch would be great though wouldn’t it

please ignore my previous ‘post’. In the future i will do what most people do, and read your FAQ!!! doh!
Also regarding freesat, this is pure bliss to find someone to challange Sky, they have had people bending over backwards to pay for their packages, with an increase only a few months ago! The selling point for me is the HD content for free, which Sky will not do due to them being the only current HD content supplier (i think i’m correct by saying this). I will say this only once, thank you BBC, i won’t complain about me licence fee anymore!!!

We can’t wait for freesat, its a breathe of fresh air which could quite nicely replace ‘freeview’. What must be understood however is that Sky isn’t just a pay-tv platform, it can offer the same channels as freesat will with no charge. Whilst you could go out and buy a freesat HD box, you could alternatively go out and buy a Sky HD box, they will view the same ‘free’ channels. The advantage freesat will have, certainly for a few months anyway is PVR capabilities for free, which Sky presently charge for.
