Freesat today announced it has added Ketchup TV to its extensive on demand line up. Available from today, Ketchup TV offers free children’s entertainment and educational shows.

Firm favourites for children on Ketchup TV include Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom, Little Baby Bum, Caillou, Fireman Sam and Thomas and Friends, as well as educational programmes Super Why? and Monster Maths. Plus, this summer on Ketchup TV, kids can look forward to new Sesame Street segments such as Cookie’s Crumby Pictures, Super Grover 2.0, Elmo the Musical and Abby’s Flying Fairy School.

Commenting on the launch, Alistair Thom, managing director at Freesat said:

We’re delighted to launch Ketchup TV on Freesat and offer even more great entertainment for kids to enjoy during the school holidays. Ketchup TV is a perfect fit for Freesat as we both offer customers a huge range of free content, without the need for expensive subscriptions or contracts.

Paul Coster, CEO of Ketchup TV’s parent company VOD365 said:

The Freesat launch massively compliments Ketchup TV’s desire to deliver children’s premium content, in a 100% safe, simple, on demand environment for free TV viewers. We’re excited to be included in the evolution of free TV in the UK and very happy to be working with the great team at Freesat.

I had a dream last night that UKTV pulls out of the Sky contract and Channels like Eden, Good food and also Gold coming on to Freeview and Freesat only if this dream came true.

But you never know but as for Gold no chance wishful thinking i would laugh my head off if it did came across to Freesat.

I think the next channels will be Sony TV and Sony Movies.

Gold no chance even if it came true Gold would stay with Virgin and Talk Talk but there is still a chance for Eden and Good Food but it will be a very long time till we see these channels come to free to air. as i know Sony TV is staying with Sky for the time being.

That’s not as daft as it sounds. If Sky Sports News was broadcast on Freesat, then it would be a constant reminder to viewers of what they were missing on Sky, so having what amounts to a teaser might well be considered good marketing. Then again, Freeview would be an even better platform since it has a lot more viewers.

The bottom line in satellite broadcasting is that things move quickly and you never know what’s around the corner. Sony TV is FTV and therefore not within Sky’s subscription packages.

I very much doubt Gold would join without a very good DTT slot however do think Good Food and Eden are both the next contenders.

That’s the same transponder that carres the FTA versions of Quest and Quest Red. The previous time that the two +1 channels were briefly FTA they were the ones on the Sky transponder. Cue the speculation!

I too am more than happy with all the recent additions, shows the confidence UKTV and Discovery see in Freesat and it being “up there” with DTT as a FTA platform to be on.

Let’s not get carried away here. More sport would be great but, apart from niche and eclectic stuff, all the major televised sport is tied up with the big players. There’s a channel called Freesports launching soon, owned by the people behind Premier Sports – I don’t know anything else about what it will show though.

It’s a story I hear from a lot of people Natalie. Sky have got very greedy over the years and with the likes of Netflix and Amazon, they are no longer the sole place in the UK for premium pay content.

Spread the Freesat word to more Sky subscribers as the more who defect to the platform the more chances channels will join Freesat, particularly HD ones too.

Germany hasn’t really adopted to pay tv as so many of the top channels are fat. It will rejoin nickelodeon, Comedy Central and viva along with many others which remain SD Fta.

The AstraHD+ service is €99 per year. It’s a shame something like this wasn’t adopted in the U.K. Using simeltanious encryption for the rest of the uk commercial broadcasters like itv, c4 and 5’s additional HD channels. Free is better, but would have hit sky very hard for non sports fans

There’s more chance of Forces TV going HD* than there is of Eurosport making their two channels FTA. I can’t even see Eurosport following the Premier Sports / FreeSport model and setting up a new FTA channel, because Eurosport make money by selling access to the massive amount of live sport that they have rights to but no room for on their two satellite channels via the VOD Player.

What could, concievably happen is that as the Eurosport coverage of the Olympics gets closer they set up an FTA channel to advertise the coverage on their main channels and Player app, but even that’s not going to happen until 2022 (winter) and 2024 (summer) as the BBC has the rights for the UK until then. What will the UK broadcasting terrain look like by 2024 anyway – channels moving away from satellite and going fully IP delivered?

BTW, anyone considering signing up for Eurosport Player should step back for a while, as by all accounts the new Player app is full of bugs.

Agreed, it has been a good year for new channels, but we’re comparing this year with what have been pretty lean times as far as channel additions go in the last couple of years.

Agree spot on Tiffany I do believe more and more channels with follow suit I know this cause i was a Sky employee for 20 years then was paid off in June I now use Freesat as I do not want to pay for subscription TV as Sky are ripping their customers off badly, I also tell you that Eurosport was very close to going free to air back in February when talks broke down between Sky and Discovery
but I can tell you that Eden is next in line the last i heard, Sky will always try and keep channels encrypted.
