Manhattan Plaza HD-S v1.45 Update AvailableManhattan have released the v1.45 update for upgrade manually via USB. It will be issued as an OAD after the Olympics as Freesat is on lockdown until after then.

The update has been tested extensively by Manhattan and Freesat as well as users given it as a pre-release to address specific issues they were encountering. There has only been one upgrade issue reported where an upgraded box experienced the audio cutting out after changing channels using the CH+ / CH- buttons or UP / DOWN buttons. Restoring to factory default fixed the issue.

Despite trying extensively Manhattan have been unable to reproduce the issue and would appreciate anyone that wishes to upgrade to v1.45 ahead of the OAD doing so and contacting Manhattan via their website or posting below if you encounter any issues.

The release notes for v1.45:

• Supports ITV Player which can be launched via freesat channel 903.

• Supports On Demand channel “The Space” which can be launched via freesat channel 908.

• Fixed an issue where the SCART audio left/right outputs would only output audio in mono.

• Fixed an issue with Auto Turn Off, Auto Turn On and Auto Standby timer functions that would cause them to work intermittently.

• Fixed an issue where pressing back to cancel the programme reminder prompt would not work correctly.

• Increased HDMI audio output level to bring it level with the sound from most TV’s internal analogue/digital tuners.

Upgrade instructions are included in the download. To perform the upgrade a USB stick or powered USB hard drive is required as there is not enough power from the USB port for many bus-powered hard drives.

I’ve been testing this firmware for over a week and it works a treat.
Just put the bin file on a fat 32 formatted usb stick into the usb port on the back. Go into the system menu, select update by usb press ok and wait until the new firmware is installed.

I was listening to LBC radio last night. It was a phone in about the Olympics. Some guy phoned in and gave Freesat a massive plug. Said he had 24 Olympic channels for free etc, you only have to buy the kit.Great idea.

If Freesat are on lockdown how did Humax boxes get a OAD on the 30th July?

As it reads you don’t need permission. Don’t you mean NOT not NOTE admin?

…because it was deemed a critical error.

    Corrected, thanks.

So obviously Freesat’s lockdown is a sensible precaution that is violated in emergencies (eg the Humax update), whereas the BBC’s lockdown appears to be absolute (otherwise they could have modified their streams to work around the problem just as C4 HD did just before they first launched!)

Well possibly but this could be Sky being awkward and yes, critical issues override lockdowns – even in the BBC’s case if it’s service affecting (this more for discussion in the previous thread to this one).

Nice to see ITV Player arrive on the Manhattan, presume admin it’s not yet available on the HDR-S? Richard, have you given ITV Player a bash yet?

  7. Richard Crichton Says:

Hi Neil, Yes I have but it’s no iPlayer. No better quality option and I hardly ever watch ITV anyway so don’t really want to watch the stuff on there. The Space is more me . Really enjoying the John Peel material on there and I like the way the Freesat info bar still works. Glad that Manhattan have got everything working although the operation of the BBC red button seems more sluggish than it was before the Olympic channels were added although it could be the new firmware.

It hasn’t launched yet. Satbuyer is now saying early August although they don’t specify the year :-)

It should launch late this week, maybe even stock in the country today. It comes with ITV Player as standard.

Sorry admin, forgot the HDR-S hadn’t launched yet, will be good to see how it does sales-wise, good to see that will also have ITV Player as standard too.

  11. Muzer Says:

Just a random thought, probably most people have realised this already but worth spelling out anyhow – the most likely reason for the high number of “No” votes in the current poll is that most people who come here already have a Freesat box and most likely already a recorder, and any second boxes they might want they don’t want to be recorders. Just a thought; I know if I had the choice between the Humax and the Manhattan right now, having no previous Freesat boxes, I’d definitely think twice before choosing the Humax straight away (depending on whether or not I could live without the custom firmware), considering the price difference for new. Certainly if I didn’t know about the custom firmware I would go for the Manhattan. So, anyone from Manhattan who might be reading and seeing the poll results, don’t take it as a sign of discouragement ;)

Anyway, I am glad to see the other Manhattan get an ITV Player/The Space update. Does BoxOffice365 work now as well? Also, are there now any IP-capable Manhattan boxes without these features? Just wondering.

If the answers to both these questions are “yes” and “no” respectively, it bodes well for the relationship between Freesat and Manhattan wrt G2 (considering Manhattan are supposed to be the primary partner). Humax has a bit of an advantage as being the de facto standard testing box*, presumably because they’re the most popular higher-end boxes – but again, it bodes well with their partnership with Freesat for G2 purposes that their boxes also work with everything.

    * Except for the BBC’s HD department, it seems ;)

No it doesn’t (it’s just a beta trial) but anyway I don’t want to pay £4.99 a month and only have 28 mostly oldish films to choose from.
The Manhattan has a much smaller form factor than the Humax due to the 2.25″ 320Gb notebook style hard drive. That probably puts some people off although I found 320Gb perfectly big enough for use with my Technisat recorder.
The future Manhattan G2 box will have 500Gb or 1TB which is obviously more in line with the Humax box.

Is there an update on the G2 boxes? I am a Sky subscriber and desperate to leave as their prices rise from this month, I want a box that will allow me to get an element of pay TV like Netflix/Lovefilm etc. too so I’m hanging on for the G2 boxes.

G2 now due in September; not sure if this applies to Manhattan or other brands.

A factory reset might resolve it, but if you can wait, it might be worth getting in touch with Manhattan first as this naturally will be a concern to them and the reason why they’ve released the update at this stage; to ensure no bugs.

Could be corrupted firmware I suppose. My boxes have been perfect since I upgraded in July.

    Hi SKC,

It would be best if you could contact us directly regarding this issue by creating a support ticket on our website or calling us (020 8450 0005). I want to discuss with you directly but I don’t want to post my email address publicly (and get it picked up by spam bots).

My first thought is that Dolby Digital has been turned on but that your equipment doesn’t support it… that would explain the lack of sound. However, you mention BBC HD “and the 3 or so other BBC channels” so it can’t be anything to do with Dolby Digital.

Have you tried a factory default to see if this resolves it?

I’m eager to help you resolve this issue, and get to the bottom of the cause.

    All the best,

    Alex

    Hi Richard,

I’m not sure if any do unless the manufacturer has implemented support themselves. If there’s a particular model you have I can get in contact with them. Or any infrared/learning remote would do the trick.

I’m guessing if you haven’t contacted us or responded here the problem resolved itself with a factory default? It would be good to know if that is the case.

Hi . went to freesat site and found the frequency for ch4hd and did a manual retune , that now works ok but still no itv player as this is probably in the soft ware of the box due to the fact it is internet based , is there a service mode one can access to see if there is a switch which have have been switched off and requires reseting . seen many problems on flat screen tvs which have been caused by this sort of glitch? . regards william .

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Some times when switched on sound is ok . then more often than I would like there is no sound via hdmi . having said that the other sound outs work , ie: scart oand optical it makes no odds whether dolby is on or of still no sound through hdmi . when it works its ok but as I say its getting worse about 8 switch ons from 10 mon hdmi sound . any one any thoughts ? regards William young
