Metronic SATHD100 Freesat HD Receiver

Metronic have finally released their first Freesat product, the SATHD100 Freesat HD Digital Box, a month later than planned, and TechRadar have written a useful review worth reading:

TechRadar Metronic SATHD100 Review

The review seems to suggest a fairly good all round receiver, although nothing ground breaking over the existing cheaper range Alba boxes (Grundig, Goodmans and Bush) or middle range Humax, with the exception of the usable USB port for playing your media files like music and video.

Priced at an initial £150 uptake will probably be slow, given the current price of the other HD receivers, but once Metronic begin to recoup the cost of manufacture, that price should drop.

At present we have not found any retailers selling this product, but it’s early days so please keep checking our Metronic SATHD100 product page for info.

Metronic are also developing a PVR version at this time, although we have been unable to confirm an ETA for release.

Hard to see who is going to buy it in my view.

It looks ugly in my opinion and the review seems mediocre.

So when the excellent Foxsat looks a million dollars, has more enthusiastic reviews and costs £20 less, who’s going to buy this?

Personally, I wouldn’t buy it for £100 with the Foxsat at £130. At £150, I just can’t see any demand.

I agree with Al – not many takers at that price.

Think they should have released a PVR at a £200-£250 price point, think they would have done some business then, Humax can’t seem to make enough of em!

Doesn’t seem good value for money at all!

People will buy it, but it’s likely to be those who know absolutely nothing about satellite receivers. For a fixed dish install and people leaving $ly I’m sure it will do the job perfectly and they’ll be happy in their ignorance. It ought to be under £100 though.

Not very appealing, looks quite ugly. Personally if the box is at that price, Humax wins hands down.

Hey, don’t slate the ALBA boxes! Ive got the BUSH branded ALBA box and it is the most reliable set top box ive ever had. HD picture on it is superb.

But I do agree, that Metronic box wont sell at that price. They could have made a killing if they had introduced a basic PVR box at a £200 price point with lots of stock. Could have killed the Humax. Wasted opportunity.

In fairness, the Metronic is has good specs (rather better than the Alba boxes, and somewhat different from – though not as good as – the Humax). Yes, it does seem overpriced, and no, I won’t be buying one, but I’m sure it has a place in market (even if only for its USB functionality).
