Freesat, the free-to-air satellite television service, is delighted to announce the launch of Vintage TV; a ground-breaking new channel dedicated exclusively to the music, culture and fashions of the five vintage decades from 1940 to 1989.
Vintage TV brings viewers a blast from the past with a cutting edge. Its eclectic mix of music, classic and original programming and must-watch shows includes Me and Mrs Jones, a new take on the talk-show format fronted by veteran rock journalist Lesley-Ann Jones. The channel also offers unique access to some incredible archive footage licensed from the BBC and Getty Images, to bring the ‘Golden Age’ back to life. This archive footage and imagery will be incorporated into 500 brand-new music videos for songs which were recorded prior to the arrival of the video era. An impressive line-up of famous faces will front the channel, led by legendary broadcaster and music expert Paul Gambaccini. He is joined by David ‘Kid’ Jensen, YES keyboardist Rick Wakeman and Eighties pop singer Kim Wilde, as well as by Tony Blackburn and David Hamilton.
Mark Briggs, Freesat’s Head of Channels, said;
We are really excited to be launching Vintage TV on Freesat. This brand new channel reaches out to the ever-growing over-fifties audience. With the current renaissance in classic trends and styles of the past, Vintage TV’s eclectic mix of music, timeless television shows and iconic presenters is sure to be a big hit with Freesat viewers. Vintage TV is another great addition to our broad and burgeoning selection of over 140 channels and yet again increases the range of quality and choice available to Freesat customers.
In the run-up to its launch, Vintage TV has also conducted a public vote to select the first song to be played on the channel, with proceeds donated to music charity Nordoff Robbins. Tune in to Freesat channel 515 at 6pm on 1st September to hear the winning track.
David Pick, former EMI executive and founder of Vintage TV said;
We are thrilled to be bringing our programming to Freesat’s loyal viewers and feel confident that our channel will soon prove to be the Number One destination for those seeking all things vintage. Our content has been created using the latest tapeless technology. There is consequently a wonderful back-to-the-future quality and feel to our programming which gives it a fresh, contemporary style. The music we celebrate, from the fifty-year so-called ‘Golden Age’, was never intended to be here-today, gone-tomorrow entertainment. Such music was crafted by some of the most legendary artists in history, and was made to last. Their recordings have stood the test of time because people all over the world still want to listen to them. They also set the impressively high standards for music being created today. Thanks to Vintage TV, viewers will now be able to enjoy all the visual memories too. We look forward to a long and mutually beneficial association with Freesat.
Vintage TV will be added automatically to customers’ Freesat service via their TVs or digital boxes. Viewers need do nothing but sit back, relax and enjoy this exciting new addition to their channel line-up.
Vintage TV will be available on Freesat channel 515 from 1st September.

@Francis
I am really sorry, but as no Country channel has managed to last more than a year or so in the UK, I guess that just like line dancing, Country is not merely a very minority interest but a very tiny and insignificant niche – therefore, so small that there is not profit to be had.
But, back to Vintage TV. The start appeared OK. Never liked Gambo and have not changed my opinion after tonight, but he has one hell of a great knowledge and memory – so respect.
Horrified to see Tony Blackburn – but there has always got to be some pain.
I liked the rather Jazz influenced flavour to the start up, but suggest that this will become marginalised as the Channel establishes. Like Country, Jazz is eclectic and minimal in commercial terms for telly.
Only real gripe is the very jerky movement on some of the early “in house” produced videos, especially the black and white segments. Was it the same off the $ky platform? And, some of the segments appear to be pretty low def and grainy. But I think that may be down to the poor source material available as opposed to transmission.
Will be interesting to see other opinions.

Further to my earlier post, I would like to add a favourite quotation of mine from Frank Zappa:
“Jazz is not dead – It just smells funny!”
I suppose the same could apply to Country as well. But after seeing the Conway Twitty segments in Family Guy, I would have to ask any Country fan “Are you Mad?”

Bad macroblocking on some of the videos so vintage it looks like Video CD quality (remember them?). No excuse for that in this day and age.
Rick Wakeman looked daft with a telly on his forehead. What a silly oversized DOG.

A good addition to the line up. Could definitely do with more bandwidth when funds allow as some of the blocking was abysmal. Good to see that Vintage are using a play-out provider that can switch aspect ratios at segment boundaries as and when required, rather than forcing everything into a 4:3 frame.

Agree with Tony @9, the logo top-left of a tele is ridiculous, and why does it have an aerial on top when the channel is received via satellite? Someone obviously got an etch-a-sketch last Christmas and thought “I know, I will design a logo on-screen-graphic-thingymebob to interfere with what is an interesting new channel”. Maybe.

@12 David – I expect the DOG is meant to look retro so they added an aerial to the TV! I expect the DOG is meant to look retro so they added an aerial to the TV! Probably look even worse with a satellite dish stuck on the top! LOL

Enjoying Vintage TV so far. Hate the DOG! It was strange watching Rick Wakeman on Wednesday peering with one eye through an old TV set. If we’ve got to have a DOG, how about placing it on the screen so that it does not intrude on the performance?

The description on this thread says “a ground-breaking new channel dedicated exclusively to the music, culture and fashions of the five vintage decades from 1940 to 1989.” So far, it is doing what it says on the tin.
Your interpretation is a personal one. I agree it would be nice to re-visit many of the vintage shows – who else remembers Rooftop Rendezvous and Cafe Continentale? Perhaps Vintage TV will evolve this way as they find their feet and work out what people want to watch. And if they can afford to do deals with the copyright holders.
And remember – give a DOG a bad name . . . . .

I don’t especially like the DOG but it’s so translucent that you hardly notice it after a while. It didn’t bother me at all in the Rick Wakeman interview.

In the whole history of television has any channel managed to show so many repeats in so little time. It all just goes around and around and around and around. Please wake me up when something new appears.
