Freesat have today announced the addition of six new TV and Radio channels available on Friday 5th September.

The newest additions to the Freesat platform particularly strengthen the radio line-up, with RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2fm, RTÉ lyric fm and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta joining.

Also new are the three ‘time-delay’ channels from Channel 4, including Film4 +1, E4 +1 and More4 +1. Showing identical programmnig to the original channels, just with a one hour delay, should the times suit you better.

All channels and variants will automatically be updated via your Freesat digital box sometime during tomorrow (usually around 11am).

Commenting on the addition of the new channels, Emma Scott, Managing Director of Freesat, said,

We’re pleased to announce the addition of these new services to the platform. The RTÉ Radio stations bolster Freesat’s radio offering for listeners, while Channel 4’s time-delayed services give viewers further opportunities to watch these popular channels

Adrian Moynes, Managing Director of RTÉ Radio said,

RTÉ Radio is looking forward to launching on Freesat this Friday. Listeners with Freesat will be able to hear RTÉ Radio in high quality sound anywhere in the UK, which is good news for consumers with an interest in Irish radio

Sarah Rose, Head of VOD and Channel Development for Channel 4, says,

The time delayed channels we are launching onto Freesat will give our viewers even more opportunities to enjoy our programming

So Freesat can reach their 200 channels… BBC 1 & 2 will also have +1,+2,+3,+4 (oh, and -1,-2,-3 and -4 for people who cant wait) by November……..joking aside….we are getting there…….keep it coming….

PS: I recently sent an email to the CEO of Extreme Sports…Al Gosling asking if they propose to transmit FTA via freesat….he replied…

”many thanks for the enquiry, One of our team will come back to you on this if we have any positive news”

This would be a cracking sporting coup for us freesat supporters…..

Send him an email to al@extreme.com

Paul – there is plenty of stories about RTE going FTA in the next 3/4 weeks but from what I gather it is only the 3 RTE channels RTE1, RTE 2 and TG4, there is no mention of TV3 going FTA yet as TV3 is owned by a different company who is Doughty Hanson! If TV3 does go FTA i presumme that Channel 6 would also follow suit as they are owned by TV3. If all 5 channels did go FTA and joined the Freesat platform which more than likely the will since the radion stations are, it would be a blow to SKY in Ireland!

Good news. Freesat is steadly building into an excellant free service. We have come a long way from the days when I started watching TV with just BBC and ITV. (2 channels). I think some people that grumble about the service don’t realise just what a great service it is.

Yes I know things have moved on and progressed and it is all about choice but lets get back to basics, realistically just how many hours a day of TV does the average person want to watch. I probably view for about 6 hours a day and even then I cannot fit in all that I want to watch on Freesat and Freeview(recordings).
Yes choice is impotant but more choice reduces the number of viewers for each channel and in turn means that various pots for financing them have to be shared by more channels. Less money for individual channels probably means a reduction in the quality of programmes. Clearly there is a balance between the number of channels and overall finance that is available in order that quality programmes are to be produced.

I supose in the end it will be survival of the fittest. As we see in other walks of life those that fail go to the wall.

Well I have had my rant.

Minor point on EPG list, Raidió na Gaeltachta doesn’t have RTE in front

Very glad about the RTÉ radio channels – I occasionally listen to RTÉ Radio One via satellite (excellent news programmes, especially between 5 and 7 pm – useful for filling in the gaps left by the BBC and other UK purveyors of broadcast news).

Freesats advertising is predominately about HD TV which is what attracted me and although limited at present, what is brodcast is excellent.I got mine just after the Olympics started and couldn’t tear myself away and I’m looking forward to Kong tomorrow (bad luck SKY viewers SD for you). Please could you answer the question most of us have, ”who is lined up for HD and when?”

The + 1 channels came live well after the 4 RTE channels.
If your Alba (e.g Bush etc) box did not update channels required try this:
Unplug box from mains for one minute then repower and select a tv station broadcast from Eurobird satellite.
Examples are France 24, Chart Show and Bubble Hits.
View for 12 minutes . Now check your channel list and hey presto the new channels are there! (I hope!)

no such luck for me no +1 channels

  19. Duncan Macdonald Says:

lib – try keying 301 and see if Film 4+1 appears on screen.
If it does you have corrupted EPG due to manual tuning history of non – freesat channels and only fix is a First Time Install.
If no show try to copy exactly my successful forcing of channel update on a BushSD with software 1.2.16 (receiver upgrade set to automatically). Hopefully it works on HD versions of Alba box series:
View Bubble Hits channel (Selects Eurobird satellite – source of EPG data)
Switch to Standby (Blue light on)
Unplug from mains for one minute (Blue light off) (Sets box in “update mode”)
Plug back in (Blue light on)
Switch to ON to view Bubble Hits .
Leave this on view for 10 to 15 minutes.
Check Channel list now and new channels should have appeared.

Unfortunately I have a Bush HD. It has never updated automatically, always been a hassle. Its about time Bush got things working properly! Freesat should be chasing Bush to get updating sorted!
