Samsung have confirmed that they will be launching a Freesat+ receiver in March to accompany the televisions with built-in Freesat to launch around the same time.
The SMT-S7800 is a twin tuner HD PVR giving you access to all the available SD and HD content, plus 500GB hard drive for recording your favourite programmes.
The receiver will carry Samsung’s WebTV service, as well as on-demand services through the broadband connection. USB file sharing will also be possible, with playback of video and music in DivX, XviD, AVI, JPEG, MP3 formats.

The rear panel will include a HDMI connection, plus Composite, 2 x Scart (TV, VCR), S/PDIF Optical and Audio Left/Right.
Andy Griffiths, Vice President of Consumer Electronics, Samsung UK, said;
Samsung continues to deliver against its promise to create products that evolve with the needs and desires of our customers. With the Digital Switchover happening, we want every TV owner to be able to enjoy a great selection of TV channels and connectivity options. The SMT-S7800 is Samsung’s first foray into the UK retail set top box market and we are looking forward to becoming a force in this sector
Managing Director of Freesat, Emma Scott, said;
Marrying a trusted and loved national TV service with such a well known household name can only mean good things for both Samsung and Freesat, and it’s great to have them on board. This launch further strengthens the Freesat proposition of subscription-free satellite TV and is part of our long-term plan to keep on innovating to offer viewers across the UK great TV without monthly bills
The rrp is expected to be around £299. More information to follow.

Sounds interesting lets hope it can also play mkv files and the SD output is nice and sharp as I find the Humax box SD output is not the best.

This is a smart looking receiver and with a 500GB hard drive too. With all these new product lines by new manufacturers coming on to the market it’s excellent news for the platform as more retailers will stock these (ie Samsung based). Panasonic retailers push Freesat a fair bit so will be good likewise for others. It makes you wonder too whether it will change the opinion of big groups like Sony to re-introduce a Freesat TV or even a STB.

Good to have another manufacturer on the platform. Hopefully they wont make any cock ups like LG did.

Good for the Humax to have some serious competition. I’m hoping the Samsung’ll have a remote that actually works properly – not like the apalling dysfunctional device on the Foxsat HDR. If there’s one aspect of the Humax that’ll make me change, it’s that!

£299 is too expensive for a Samsung. The selling price needs to be under £200.

thansk for link as found by Paul, lists just short features and specs.
Let’s hope their product does not cripple its nonfreesat usage and we don’t have to do complex mode switching. I’ll be buying one asap if so having waited far too long for humax to bring out their second version.

Richard, £299 I guess is the starting price. After time I expect it to drop probably closer to the £230 mark. I paid £550 for my Panasonic BD750 in Nov ’09 but 3mths later they were selling for under £500.

What are the chances of being able to Save/Copy recordings to USB? Or will the USB be used for playback only?

I would sell it at an attractive 150 pounds to get freesat hd recordability into more homes.

I wish Samsung or any other manufacturer would realise that there is a waiting market for smaller freesat-integrated TVs out there. I am desperately waiting for someone to bring out a 19″ OR 22″ for the smaller rooms or bedrooms. If they did – I would buy three immediately!
