Is there anything coming in to replace teacher’s TV ?
KeithQuote
September 6th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
Well, I never watched it and I guess almost no one who was not a teacher did likewise! A victim of Ed [I've got] Balls decision in March to try and save £1m p.a. from the then Labour education budget. Any fans of the station can still get it online apparently.
Still, at least it makes a tiny bit of room on the satellite for……………. well, something!

I watched one full programme, part of science week or something, and dipped in for the odd few minutes occasionally.

Was expecting this to have been removed last week when Vintage TV joined, there must have been a reason for the delay.

As we are off topic, Admin, can you tell me if channels are added automatically to non-freesat, or do I have to scan for them? Ta

@Glyn Smith
Off topic on these update pages is absolutely fine.
Good question though, suspect if you remain in non-freesat mode, you might need to rescan; but if you are switching to and from Freesat mode, it should update automatically as part of the default rescan anyway.

Educational support programming comes and goes; what is covered is often a barometer of current educational fads. For example, in the mid-90s “IT for Teachers” programming was delivered by the BBC in the early hours of the morning. To access it, the VCR was your friend!. In the late 90s, retargetted funding ensured that it vanished from the airwaves. Nowadays, given the availibility of broadband in the UK, I’m not surprised that broadcast delivery is seen as a waste of resources. On demand, delivered over the internet is a far better model for a market with such a limited range of consumers.
To be honest, I think there’d be a market on Freesat for old OU programs, especially the ones with bearded mathemeticians in paisley ties demonstrating obscure functions with marker pens and pieces of wood and string.
Much better than counting sheep!

I agree, old OU programmes are far more entertaining than the Gambling, Big Brother and shopping channels. You also get to learn something!

10876V on Astra 2D is near being cleared, $ky have put two test labels for their two remaining services on to other widebeam transponders so I’m expecting they’ll shift very shortly.
What will become of this vacant transponder who knows but potentially interesting developments for us Freesat users (fingers crossed).

Whatever greedy $ky are doing it will be for their own benefit not Freesats.
Perhaps it will be for more 3D channels so they can charge more.

@shaun – most likely the Electric Sofa channels will use capacity on Eurobird1 and go FTA as they won’t have rights issues (also cheaper carriage than using Astra’s birds but without the same level of redundancy).
@Tony – $ky are getting a bit tight in terms of available bandwidth for their ever-growing HD expansion. Yes, they can use 2D TP’s but the transponder bandwidth is narrower so has less capacity, certainly not enough for the four HD services they plan for this year.
What would be more logical would be to do a deal to effectively ‘swap’ with Channel 5′s 2A transponder so all the C5 bouquet of services move to 2D and Sky get a 2A TP for HD use. They could move the encrypted ITV regions there too and do a similar swap deal but my hope would be we’ll get Fiver and Five USA instead! Who knows what either ITV or Five had written in to their cosy HD-Sky deal when they launched their services?
Unless SES decide to move Astra 2C back to 28.2E capacity will soon near max-out and may end up that Sky need to tempt existing 2A or 2B broadcasters on to their remaining 2D space to free up what is becoming more scarce capacity on other Astra crafts.

Astra 2D was launched in December 2000 and has a propellant service life of 12 years. In 2012 another bird will need to take over Freesat duties so not much point in moving everything onto 2D now.

Interesting article, strange Astra 2D was pretty much the only narrowbeam satellite covering Europe built and launched at the time for DTH service.
Although it’s ‘contract life’ is 12yrs, Satellites can and do last a lot longer. Services and whole multiplex bundles are added and dropped from Satellite transponders all the time. It’s got a fair bit of life left yet, once it’s replacement arrives in 2012 it won’t take much effort to offload and swap services on to one of the newer replacement craft so adding extra services now won’t have any impact in terms of it’s longevity.

As “update scan” allows us to go off topic, I’d like to do just that.
Some of the recent stories have been quite long, and have quickly filled up the front page. Stories like LG and the iPlayer are really only of interest to LG owners and conspiracy theorists. How would it be if Admin adopted a policy of putting headlines plus a summary on the front page, backed up by a file containing the full story? Admin will say it will take more time – but the result ought to be a far more readable front page, with the opportunity to comment on more topics. What do other posters think?
And another thing! Official statistics have shown that around 25% of Scottish youngsters leave school functionally illiterate. Why have so many of them turned off their spelling checkers before choosing to post on this site? This post would have been a mess if I’d turned off mine!

@Jock
Will give your comments some thought, but with the current setup/layout, it might be too hard to implement; we’d need to operate more as a newspaper style site if that was the case. Don’t forget that the ‘recent post’ column at the top left kind of serves as a way to go straight to a news story of more interest to you.

#24 – admin
Thanks for the quick response. At present the site operates by presenting a news story and inviting people to visit an associated page to post comments. I was visualising a condensed version of the news story (when it seemed too long for the front page), accompanied by the chance to click to visit the full story. The “recent post” column currently only points to about half the stories on the front page and is of no help in finding stories which have been pushed down the stack.
Would you consider the idea if enough readers said they liked it?

I did a retune last week and did it with Other Sat Channels, so now I have an extra listing on my Panasonic G10B as well as Freesat, Freeview and Terrestrial I have an Other Sat. OH dear over another 100 channels but no listings to say what they are. Strange one is some time ago I emailed LBC 97.3 and asked why they were not on Freesat or Freeview and the reply was 2 words “To expensive” but I have found it on Other Sat Channels.

@26 – It’s £7k/yr for a radio service to be listed on the EPG, not going to break the bank. Maybe you should email LBC back and ask them why, if so expensive, are services owned by the same group (Capital, XFM, Choice FM and Gold) all on the platform yet two of their biggest (Heart and Galaxy) aren’t.
Freesat is only going to grow in popularity and there will come a point when more and more services (both radio and TV) join.

Will BBC One HD have a DOG? Guess what the “other” BBC HD channel will be called
The BBC is about to run two HD channels, the existing one, and BBC One HD. Please speculate about if the channel will have a DOG, and what the other one gets called.

HD to become the norm for all BBC programmes and channels so I expect Freesat to carry these as Freeview does not have the nessisary bandwidth.
“Danielle Nagler, Head of BBC HD, says: “HD is the future of television: people who have HD have clearly told us that they want more of their licence fee-funded content in HD. I’m delighted that the HD simulcast of BBC One will become available on satellite, on cable, and now also on Freeview’s new HD service. This is a key moment for us on the journey to HD becoming the norm for all our programmes and channels.”
“Audiences have already been enjoying many BBC One programmes in HD on our existing HD channel and the arrival of BBC One simulcast in HD will make it easier for them to find the programmes they love in high definition. BBC HD – the most popular HD channel in the UK – will continue to show programmes from across all BBC channels.”
BBC One HD will be made available to Freeview, Freesat HD, Sky HD and Virgin Media HD platforms so it really is across the board, and with BBC HD currently the award winning, most popular HD channel in the UK at the moment, viewers will certainly welcome the extra high definition content.
Given the BBC is now going down the route of simulcasting, surely the majority of their content will hopefully now be available in full HD goodness, although I wonder how long we’ll to wait for TV shows that the BBC don’t have direct control over the production of, such as Formula 1 – how long until we see F1 HD coverage for the BBC to broadcast on their HD channels?”

To be replaced on Freeview with Challenge TV… won’t make popular viewing!!
Currently on holiday in the Scottish Highlands, Freesat seems to be very popular up here, certainly amongst the guest houses (which have all recently undergone DSO switchover), particularly with Grundig SD Freesat receivers.
