Humax updated at about 13.40 and all new channels up and running OK.

Not a FIVE fan [occasional good film] but the more strength to the Freesat cause the better.

    Thanks FIVE

Now, where are all the other potential broadcasters…………………………

The auto-scan on the Humax often happens at 3am the morning after which might be the reason why.

    Admin,

Do you know if we are in for any more new channels between now and this side of Christmas? With most of the C5 family now on freesat, which is always good to see additions coming, its getting less of a reason to use the competitor’s. Personally, I would never go back to them as they have priced me out of existence with their service being far to expensive for me.

I’m aware of a couple more “potentials” to come this side of the new year, but I’m unable to say what due to agreements in place. I suspect unless Channel 4 pull another HD channel out of the bag, the Channel 5 family launched today will be the highlight this month.

I am not happy, having done the scan, yes I can get all of the new channels, BUT, my Humax box has started to play up again on the EPG page, it take ages for the sound to come on, and when I select a program to record, the box locks. I thought we had got rid of this problem, any one else with a Humax having this again please?

Great news to finally see the C5 family of channels on the platform, for me I’d say it’s complete of all the most popular channels available on other platforms FTA (with the obvious exception of a well known channel by the name of someone but that’s been discussed to death!!).

Good on Desmond for finally bringing these channels over and to SES for loaning us the Satellite with the footprint to allow them to do it! Sky’s FSFS isn’t worth the plastic the card is made from now :) :)

No, seriously, I think it’s great – I do occasionally find something on 5USA to watch, but I know people who love the programmes on both, so it’ll certainly make Freesat look a lot more attractive. Who knows, perhaps this’ll attract enough people to make BBC Worldwide/Scrips consider moving a few of their channels to FTA…

Just had a flick through the new channels as been out and about all day so only now got the chance to relax in front of the TV! It’s nice having a few extra channels, including the +1’s as it doubles the programme choice if you like something 5*/5USA may have had on an hour previously (same with C5+1). One thing though, they do need to look at the stat mux pool and sort this out as the macroblocking on 5USA, 5* and especially C5+1 is pretty bad.

Checked C5’s main channel and it’s still mapped to the BBC transponder. I suspect the 8th Dec update we were expecting may still take place but now but simply to regionalise C5’s main channel which is still yet to happen.

Muzer: Agree, think medium to long term we will see some UKTV channels present on Freeview, just glad Freesat has finally got to this point as it will please a lot of people who have missed these C5 sister channels up to now!

Thanks SL, I think that has done the trick, it still takes 30 seconds or so for the information/sound to be received, then having selected a program to record, al least that time again, Humax are good boxes, BUT……………..

Dave doesn’t require a narrow spot beam to launch on Freesat, they simply have a subscription contract with Sky that pulls in more revenue at the moment. The only chance of channels like Dave joining are when Freesat reaches a certain number of sales so advertising revenue can cover the losses of subscription revenue; what that number needs to be, who knows.

I was thinking about that ‘2yr deal’ if that’s what it is? Only speculation of course but I think any more channels in HD from C4 now, sadly, won’t appear until the New Year as they’d be testing by now.

We’ve had our early Christmas present in the form on the C5 channels, next year we’ll hopefully get more HD.

I think we are nearly there with all the freesat channels we really need and the BBC I-player. I live in Scotland and have a 2008 Panny TV and am very pleased. I have ITV HD London, ITV HD Granada & STV HD in non freesat mode but the one thing I would like is STV HD on the Freesat EPG-any up to date information?

Richard, I think you might just be a little bit in love with your Manhattan. Not sure if that is healthy but good to hear you are enjoying it :)

  35. Neil Says:

You never know Richard, those north of the border might get a treat from Freesat and STV before Christmas. I too doubt that it will appear, if it does, before the New Year but you never know. They must be paying for transponder bandwidth and carriage of programme to Sky (who are uplinking it), will be a hell of a lot more than the £35k for the Freesat EPG slot. There’s got to be more than just the EPG costs I reckon.

I’ve not seen a Manhattan HD-S in the flesh yet but will do in the next few weeks and have a play with it. I recommended it to the person who got it partly based on both this site and your experiences. The guy who’s got it is very impressed both with the unit and it’s PQ.

We might see another update scan with the C5 regionalised today. Just a guess but they were planning on adding the C5 sister services today so wondering whether they’ve done this the other way around? All the viewable C5 regions on 10964H now have MHEG compliant subtitles working which denotes Freesat inclusion (as Sky use teletext style ones.. yuk!).

I don’t have any further updates on it, so unsure whether it is likely before Christmas now. Suspect you’ll hear within the next week if at all because Freesat, along with most of the industry shut down for 2 weeks over Christmas/new year.

The easy non Freesat mode and the 8 favourites lists which can contain a mixture of Freesat and non Freesat are a real boon for me. It's so easy to have all the HD channels in one list instead of having them spread out all over the EPG. For me its the only truly sensible Freesat zapper on the market purely because of their software.
    @Neil
Fingers crossed but as I said will believe it when it happens. The Manhattan is a good proposition and only the small and very light remote makes it seem a budget product.

Apart from 111 they were the lowest slots available. If they had come on board two years ago they may have got a lower slot but you can’t expect Freesat to rearrange all their EPG numbers to suit Five.
Personally I think Freesat should have a separate HD channel category instead of having them spread out all over the EPG.

As Richard says, these are the lowest slots available for the ‘5’ channels and freesat has reserved them for C5 otherwise they’d have been in the 140’s. To me it makes sense to put these here as the EPG goes:

    , , , S4C, , (obviously S4C and C4 transposed for Welsh postcodes)

I think overall the Freesat EPG looks really neat compared to all other platforms. Although launched later than the rest, this has become one of it’s strengths, very much so compared to Sky and to some extent, Freeview.

Lee B: There’s no need for a seperate HD catagory as when existing services go HD on the platform (C4’s will most likely be the first) then the SD version will be replaced with the HD for HD receivers. I suspect 127 or 133 is reserved for a future C5 HD and should C5 appear on 127 then 133 for another CBS service or +1.

It seems Freesat have put a lot of thought in to EPG layout from the outset with the future expansion in mind.

… that second paragraph should read:

    1,2,3,4,5, BBC services, S4C, ITV services, S4C, C4 services, C5 services.

Seems the site doesn’t like use of the greater than/less than symbols!

@ Neil if that’s the case and SD will be replaced by the HD version on the EPG then that’s cool, no sign of this update happening yet, any timescale for this?

Not yet but the first president of this was when NHK World went HD (and before it’s SD version was shut down). Sky have insisted until now that broadcasters keep an SD and HD slot separate, only now are they doing the same and allowing the same LCN’s (Logical Channel Numbers) for both SD and HD versions of a channel. The cynic in me makes me think it’s purely a money making opportunity for Sky but good to see it’s happening as it reduces slightly costs for HD channel launches on both platforms. It could be what C4 are holding out for with their other HD channel launches on Satellite as they’ve got the bandwidth to do it if and when they wish.
