It isn’t so much a reflection on the value of Freesat, but the struggling broadcasting market leading channels to either go FTA only (no EPG inclusion) or vanish completely. In addition, with Sky stopping new requests for SD slots on their EPG, many small broadcasting channels are being bought out (like Sony did) for EPG slots. Not that I’m suggesting this has happened with Wedding TV, I’m not sure of the reasons…sure someone will confirm?

I would take a guess and say Wedding TV is fairy likely to be back, as based on previous events it seems Wedding TV removal is just a temporary one.

On 18/08/11 Wedding TV was removed (http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/update-scan-180811) and then added back again on 31/08/11 (http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/update-scan-310811)

Perhaps someone at Wedding TV keeps forgetting to pay the Freesat fee I wonder? ;-)

Due to the week economy & more firms closing down or in recievership/liquadation at the moment, I think some broadcasting Co at the moment are in the same boat, think we will see more channels leaving here before any new channels arrive. Lets just hope this is not the future trend for Freesat, I’ts a dame good & best free sat platform.

It is better to have quality over quantity, so the most important thing going forward is an increasing number of HD channels.

Freesat should be lobbying hard for the ITV, Channel 4 and 5 hi-def channels, other channels will come and go.

Wedding TV is still on, albeit just on the non-freesat menu.

Last time they removed the service I dropped them an email and got a reply along the lines they weren’t aware of this. To the best of my knowledge I’m not aware the channel is shutting down so either they’ve been removed, chosen to be removed, got a technical issue resulting in removal or are going to wind up imminently. Apart from M4M’s removal, other channels dropping off the platform in recent Months have all followed shortly afterwards by a Sky platform removal and subsequent closure.

      Quote

  8. Muzer Says:

Well, M4M2 was replaced on Sky with a different channel, so it “sort of” was removed from all platforms.

Sorry!. Being discussed on Digital Spy. Seems it was a transponder move.

Don’t remember losing the signal after a transponder move before. Really odd!

The Vintage TV tp move should give them a more resilient signal in bad weather. The original freq was one of the weaker ones on Eutelsat 28A.

No, I can guarantee it won’t be the ‘death’ of freesat! Whilst I don’t like to see channels disappear it has to be noted that most of these which have recently gone had piffling viewing figures on all platforms! Ocean TV wasn’t exactly riveting viewing for example! Freesat will grow and grow, Sky’s pay TV gains have almost stalled now meanwhile freesat’s sales are accelerating with the next milestone the 3m mark.

I have every faith that more HD will arrive and this year, watch this space!

and with nearly 3 million viewers can freesat take this to future channels saying there missing 3 million viewers

      Quote

  16. Muzer Says:

Once the figures are confirmed so they can actually say they have 3 million boxes purchased (note: not the same as 3 million viewers necessarily, as boxes might have been to replace/supplement others, but on the other hand boxes are often in houses with more than one person…), I’m sure they can and will use that argument if/when attempting to convince channels to join.

Offtopic for this post but relevant for this blog: Interesting and slightly disappointing from our perspective post on a516′s blog today, regarding what various platforms (including Freesat) think of the idea of local TV: http://a516.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/digital-tv-platform-operators-reveal.html

My question is, why haven’t Freesat been in talks?

Yep, 3m unit sales will equate to a calculated ‘per viewer’ figure on a household basis freesat will use to perspective channels joining the platform. As for local TV, this is a dream by Jeremy Hunt, the existing services aren’t exactly doing well with Channel M in Manchester recently closing down. I don’t think they’ll have the money to launch on DSAT unless it’s at very low bitrates!

      Quote

  18. Muzer Says:

I understand that, and I don’t think it’s likely to do well at all – but it does make Freesat look bad in comparison to Sky, Virgin and DMOL who are all actively making life easier for any local channels who might want to venture onto satellite. Freesat could at least reserve channel 111 oslt. The worst possibility would be them going pay or FTV on satellite because Sky have tempted them in, and being on Virgin and Freeview – then if the small chance that some local channels do succeed becomes a reality and people start to value them, Freesat will look pretty lacking. Of course, not saying that will happen, but I’m just thinking out loud as it were on what the worst case scenario of all this local TV stuff might be from Freesat’s perspective especially if they aren’t proactive. Examples of how they could be proactive would be: offering reduced-price capacity on the Freesat Home transponder for as many channels that they can fit at reasonable quality in return for being FTA and not going with Sky, and at the very least reserving an EPG slot for them like Sky and DMOL have done.

Plus the fact that a local London TV channel is lobbying heavily for satellite provisions to be included in the local TV scheme due to the fact that the signal from Crystal Palace is planned to be a bit rubbish – if that goes through, it’ll be interesting to see how this will be handled.

If you have poor signal on both Freeview and Freesat, which are broadcast in completely different ways then it would suggest you have issues elsewhere…you don’t live inside a mobile phone mast do you ;)

  21. Neil Says:

I take your point Muzer but I really can’t see the content on these local TV channels, for the majority, being any good at all. Channel M went through a phase of not being too bad up here in Manchester but in recent years it’s been in a declining orbit until closing down a couple of weeks back. A London-wide TV channel could do well given the population but in smaller populations like Preston, Liverpool or even Manchester then Jeremy Hunt is living in fantasy-land! If Ofcom decide to harmonise the 700MHz spectrum DTT-wise then the whole thing is up the swanny on Freeview as there’ll be no spectrum left! I do wonder if Hunt doesn’t survive his recent political battering when ’round two’ enters Westminster then this whole local TV idea will go with him.

In relation to Ch.111, isn’t this reserved by the BBC? It’s a lucrative EPG slot now and I wonder if C4′s ’4 Seven’ proves successful whether ITV will want to do something similar and acquire it for this purpose? I’d argue you can watch most ITV1 primetime output at other times on ITV2 though so it probably won’t happen!

  22. Kevin ver 1 Says:

Jeremy Hunt has done a great deal of damage to local news. On one hand ITV have been allowed to reduce their local TV output on the other the BBC budgets have been cut which must have an effect on local news output. I have noticed just how little local news is now on the BBC website compared to a few years back.

It is clear that he favours Sky to succeed and for that he should resign. Who is going to watch these new local stations? Most of the content will be amater in nature and is only on for short periods. I think the internet would be a more appropriate home.

      Quote

  23. ASK Says:

Three Million Freesat boxes, might not equal three million viewers, but one thing is certain, is that it equals three million deliberate sales, and all that are in working order, will be in use.

I am sure, the same can not be said for Freeview. As a case in point, I have five Freeview units, and only use one, about three times a day, for the Scottish news, as I only get a handful of channels, and the Radio channels shut down at 4pm, to enable BBC Alba to broadcast. This is why I hope Freesat’s next advertising campaign targets Freeviewlite users, as Freesat can offer much more

In terms of TV viewing, Freesat is the best purchase I have made, and my one fear, is that Sky will do everything in its power, to destroy Freesat. If you don’t agree, just watch the recent Panorama episode on the demise of ITV DIGITAL.

Kevin, I couldn’t have said better myself! I heard Mr Hunt’s resignation was being called again by Labour this morning, no doubt it will all come out in the wash when he turns up at Leveson!

ASK: Sky will try to dent Freesat around the edges but it’s getting harder now as HD is slowly maturing as a standard and once exclusivity deals expire I’m sure we’ll see more going FTA out of Sky’s Encryption deals. The same thing that happened to ITV Digital can’t in essence happen to Freesat as there’s no encryption/subscription involved and the media are very wised up to these sort of goings on now, especially where Murdoch’s concerned!

It’s doubtful they’d tell you anything in a speculative enquiry, they usually like to make a formal announcement and I think they are tied in with Sky up until a certain period. This won’t last for ever, may not expire for a couple of years but long term I think they will join the platform, especially now Virgin Media has no shareholding in UKTV! Don’t expect Dave in the short or medium term though however if you can’t wait that long just buy the box set of Top Gear and QI ;)

I once thought BBC Three was ‘Chav TV’ but it does show a few odd decent things although mostly repeats too. ITV2 is aimed at celebrity ‘goss’ together with it’s use for ITV1 re-runs. I caught 10mins of an episode of TOWIE the other day, watched it more for curiosity than anything – the acting was so poor it was amusing, not my cup of tea in the slightest!!

I do think though and you all have to agree here that these shows regarded as ‘poor’ which attract high viewers put good advertising money in to ITV’s coffers to hopefully keep all these channels FTA and away from the evil teeth of Sky’s corporate coffers so as long as ITV and C4 get good ratings for shows most intellectually minded would regard as ‘dross’ then it helps support the channel and also pay for production of programmes that I do find of interest. I used to think this of Big Brother on C4 which never watched but helped pay for other more factual stuff on the channel, it’s for this reason alone I wished it had still done well for C4.
