A couple of potentials but I’m not aware of the deals being concluded yet.

The closure was announced back in February so no suprise. Did not meet expectations is the reason given. I wouldn’t shed a tear if they all closed but that would be bad for Freesat coffers so I hope they don’t.

Fair enough, I hope they are strong additions.

I agree Richard, freesat need the fees from these channels to keep investing so it is certainly important they hang around for a while!

Argos seem to be the last of the ‘old school’ high street retailers that haven’t yet disappeared. It’s very sad but seems to be a sign of the times, Argos saw their TV channel as a last ditch attempt to revitalise their portfolio. What will happen now I don’t know but hope they manage to keep afloat as it’s the staff who will then loose their jobs.

They are going to focus online from now on. Those catalogs must cost them a fortune to print so I don’t blame them.

For the sake of clarity, Argos is owned by Home Retail Group, which also owns Homebase. They are a profitable business and their shares have performed well over the last 12 months. They have not “gone under” just made a business decision to close their TV channel as the strategy of promoting products on TV failed to meet their expectations.

Not sure I agree with the digital future plans.

I have shopped at Argos but always turn to the catalogue for inspiration only then reserving on-line for in-store pick-up. In fact browsing the catalogue is a good source of ideas. I doubt I’ll use an Argos website in the same way which probably means its the last time I’ve shopped there.

As for Freesat, a shopping channel is no great loss. Never watched it, never would.

Slightly off topic but guess you have all seen the hype over BT sport being free if you have broadband with BT. It is being shown free on Sky TV if you have a Sky account and broadband with BT. So my question to admin or anyone with inside knowledge – Is there any chance Freesat will transmit BT sport free if you have BT broadband or am I just living in hope?

They said no in an email, but I can’t see why they couldn’t do it for the free time boxes, where surely they’d be able to sell it directly. It’s a shame.

The issue for the BBC who’ve 50% funded freesat is that the Trust didn’t like the idea of what was public BBC money then in effect going to fund a service which ultimately is competition for other pay TV providers. That excuse sounds very two faced to me based on the fact firstly ITV also 50% joint funds the platform (and is commercial facing) plus all that development in youview, guess who part paid in to that (and is now a full commercial venture), you’ve guessed it the BBC! The BBC Trust gave freesat permission to stream pay movie services but no sport, this however needs to be re-thought as feel otherwise the platform could get left behind longer-term.

BT are in this for the long-haul, whilst it’s great welcome competition and will dampen Sky, it would be nice for freesat to be a platform which also has BT Sport’s availability. Remember, this for BT is about broadband and phone customer gains, whilst I’d agree the majority of ‘hardcore’ sports fans wouldn’t live without pay TV (so wouldn’t be freesat adopters anyway) feel it could add something for the casual sports viewer!

They could deliver it through IPTV, not linear channels in the same way the movies you pay for get through.
But the fact the BBC Trust has to ratify everything basically means ITV’s stake is name only, because if those gimps at BBC Trust HQ say no, it doesn’t happen.
So its not as 50/50 as they’d like you to think it is.

Yep, fully agree there. The BBC Trust need to allow freesat to exploit some commercial value, it’s PSB remit is clear and doing a good job in that respect. It’s no different to DMOL or Freeview which the beeb also have a shareholding in.

You need a Sky UK box with an active card in it (not in Ireland though). Then if you get BT broadband you can have it activated on your box for free for a year, or if you are provided by another company then you can subscribe like any other premium channels.

Plusnet is BT’s bargain basement ISP, I’m with them too, and good they are, but they will only offer these channels to people taking BB direct through BT themselves.

It replaced Pitch World after Pitch went into administration- looks like the changes to the freesat data happened yesterday as the overnight update has put ‘Discount TV’ on 804 (and capitalised 803 to ‘PITCH TV’).

In addition to Ahlulbayt TV, Paversshoes and Horse & Country, there are a number of other channels with the 3840 freesat data PID active; DM Digital, LBC, LBC News 1152 and ‘8900’ on 11024H.
Data is still present on a number of channels which have left the platform or taken over from channels that were on freesat at some point: SuperCasino, UMP Movies, Channel AKA, Sony Movies (took over from Movies4Men2), Sony Movies+1 (took over from Movies4Men2+1) and bid plus (took over from speedauctiontv). Chart Show Dance has had its PID enabled since freesat’s launch…

Cheers Harry, noticed too that PID’s are left active after channels have ceased. DM Digital’s has been there for ages, not sure if Ahlulbayt and Paversshoes TV have though? It’s also interesting that 3840 is active on that 8900 encrypted stream, maybe it could be something destined for the platform (Channel 5HD??). I would like Chart Show Dance to come on board, apparently when Ministry of Sound were involved with Dance Nation they wouldn’t pay for inclusion which is why it’s CSC’s last station not on-board. Since the rebrand it is now 100% CSC owned so there’s hope!

It is interesting looking at that list as things have moved on somewhat since last January. Just goes to prove that ‘never say never’ when it comes to channel additions – I never thought Sky would ever put their channels on the platform, just shows when there’s some bargaining and arm twisting to be had (in the form of ITV Player/iPlayer) by FS’s two shareholders then things start to happen!! They did miss one clause though, that the +1’s were included too!

Considering £299.99 from most places from Richersounds to JLP, Currys and most Indies. Many people including me Don’t seem that the price is too high for a box that has Integrated WI-FI and 1TB hard drive.

Possibly not, but the trade price is very high for the product and retailers are having to be careful how much they hold in stock. Also, £50 more for a white box with wifi is quite an increase in price.

      Quote

  61. Steve Says:

I don’t see the trade prices.. 50quid for a white box with wifi and a tb hard drive people would pay more for the black 1tb and wifi dongle 279.99 + 39.99 JLP prices. so what’s the problem. With saving the extra cash getting the white box. Unless this is a trade issue that its only available to trade that are not ripping the price to shreds #save the high st.

      Quote

  62. admin Says:

Not really, the black 1TB can be easily bought for less than £250 so that is a £50 difference, less ~£10 for an appropriate wifi dongle and you’ve saved a ton. But anyway, the point being that retailers aren’t that keen to stock the white unit as it doesn’t make sense to do so, the product is incredibly niche.

I do beg to differ with you Admin its best that we call this one off. We could go on about prices and no profit for the Sellars. This is causing the high st to close many of our electrical shops.

The white freetime is going very well. you have your contacts in freesat or may be not Now… ask them. I have my retailer that I have brought from and friends in the trade. I presume Sky doesn’t pay for Challenge +1 on purpose just to make a point that its there but you need one of their boxes for maximum convenience. But what would a non Sky channel have to gain by not listing its +1 version. Or is Sky also behind this denial of +1 variants by other channels on Freesat? The Panasonic GT50 series handles the non Freesat channels pretty nicely letting you only put those channels you want in the list in whatever order you want unlike Freesat itself where you are rigidly stuck with having channels 101, 102, 103 and 104 occupied by their SD variant and cannot swap with HD (unlike the Freeview part of the same set where you can make these swaps).
