A lot of talk of them not even getting off the ground and not paying their staff in months! Don’t know how accurate this is though.

Because its far far cheaper to transmit in SD??

HD is expensive for little real benefit to the broadcaster.

QVC’s main channel is played out in HD but the feed isn’t distributed anywhere yet. QVC has now closed it’s Active service which was on Sky’s platform and utilised a fair bit of bandwidth, with this now gone there’s capacity for a QVC HD launch which I guess will come in time.

Although there’s a lot of dross on shopping channels, QVC, as one of the first, are pretty professional and all their channels are well presented. I’m sure if they launched a HD version of their main channel it would give them the edge in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

Not necessarily, it’s a bit more complicated than that! There’s a good chance it will reappear. As for a clue as to what’s the issue at play, there’s been a few tweets from journalists about the Nigerian entrepreneur behind this operation in terms of not paying some of his staff. Pity as the HD PQ was great and it wasn’t, and still might not, be very far from a Freesat launch too.

I suppose you think that DVD is no better than VHS was as well. HD boxes are £49. The difference in price is negligable. SD only boxes should be phased out and in the case of Manhattan boxes they have been.

Frack the broadcaster. They are here to serve us. If they refuse to upgrade they should go away.

Any real need to be so agresssive?

And a poor analogy tbh. Blu-ray vs DVD would be more relevant and there are a hell of a lot of people out there perfectly satisfied playing their DVD collections on their native HD TVs.

Just look at the number of large non-freeview CRTs being taken down the dump every weekend or somewhat optimistically being advertised on eBay. A very significant proportion of the general public upgrade when they are forced to, no matter how much you bunch your fists and demand HD channels every other post.

Sure, price differentials are coming down but it’s only a matter of days since the £49 mark was reached and 98% of the population is not about to rush out and buy a brand it’s never heard of.

Oh my you are in an unreasonable mood today arent you?

Many / most(?) folks dont care about HD. How many times do you go to peoples houses and see stretchy vision on the telly or worse as its not been set up right??

TV companies arent charities – at the end of they day they are there to make a profit for their shareholders. Dunno the exact figures but say it costs double to transmit in HD over SD for the extra bandwidth etc. Thats twice the cost **for no extra value to the broadcaster** and shareholders dont like that sort of unnecessary cost.

(You should see the txion quality of some of the low budget Italian channels on 13E – you would be begging them to upgrade to full SD) :D

It’ll be a good few years before HD launches become the norm.

The average “joinfreesat” inmate is probably more erm tuned in to quality over quantity. Widespread HD will probably never happen in truth – sure eventually
all the “low numbers” and their sister channels will have it (even Channel 5!) but CBS/Horror Channel, Viva and the like? Forget it.

An understandable point of view, however…
It’s likely that “HD” as we know it will, at some point, become the de facto standard for TV transmission. It may take a few years but it will – just as 625 lines replaced 405 lines.

There’s a few people who fall in to that category! HD is good but SD can be acceptable if the bitrates are high enough. Check out France 24, looks good for SD.

Obviously with the content there’s no rights issues for them so a cheaper carriage deal on EB1 is better than paying to be on Astra 2A.

They don’t get many viewers but that would potentially increase with a freesat launch. Funny thing is there’s a disclaimer at the beginning asking people not to keep filling it in to get it on one platform or another!

Might be worth admin posting something about it to bring it to people’s attention.

Most people who’ve chosen freesat are Sky defectors so not interested. Sky can go sling their hook as I’m not interested either! Taking live sport off FTA TV and then giving it back to tease people to pay is their usual trick. I wonder how many people watched it and called to subscribe? To me it was all done in a cat and mouse game to get one up over BT. Time they got used to the competition!

Pick TV could not simulcast it on satellite for sports broadcasting rights reasons because they transmit on Eurobird1’s steerable Europewide beam in the clear (along with Challenge TV) on Sky/Freesat which covers most of mainland Europe including half of Turkey as well as the United Kingdom.

Yep your right. The channel itself doesn’t get great ratings so a more prominent freesat EPG position in the less cluttered lifestyle section would probably help them with a few extra (not many but a few) extra viewers.

However many people respond I bet there’s some multiplier formula applied to give a total estimation. My other half would watch it as she’s in to a bit of equitine, I’ll get her to fill it in.

I’m probably grasping at straws here but Virgin Media made all the UKTV channels available to all paying customers, from their bottom tier package, to their top tier package. I can only assume the value of these channels has dropped to Virgin and they aren’t paying as much as before.

What I’m getting at is, I wonder if one or more UKTV channel might appear on freesat at some point in the future?

Is that a recent thing or always been the case? VM and Sky have separate agreements between themselves and UKTV, sadly it’s the Sky one which is preventing them launching on freesat as need to go FTA. I do wonder if there’s any truth in that rumour of a 2014 contract end date? Once Astra 2E and 2G are launched they could easily switch their transponders spot beam cheaply. Both satellites will be in service by next year too.

I’m not too bothered about having them on FS becuse I get them on DTT not that I watch them much if at all. 5yr old Top Gears etc as shown on Dave are not my idea of entertainment.
Found out why STV HD hasn’t launched on FS could it be because they have/had depts over £100mill.

I wouldn’t look into the HD point too much because Virgin restrict all HD channels that aren’t on freeview to their top tier package regardless.

Interesting, so previously their SD services were all in different packages? Presumably the ones on DTT FTA were in the lowest package with the non FTA ones in the higher packages? Their Drama channel replaced Blighty, Really also wasn’t FTA until a couple of years ago so these historically were probably in the higher packages? That may still be the case with Sky, perhaps someone could confirm?

I wonder if this is being paid for by VM as a sweetener for subscriptions or UKTV are taking the hit? UKTV do need subscription services to bring in revenue but they can do a pay and FTA model and it’s daft people having to pay for some of them on satellite when they are FTA on DTT. Yes DTT has more viewers but so do freesat and FTA Sky viewers without subs enabled on their boxes too!

    Gold was on M+,L,XL, Gold + 1 L, XL

    Yesterday and + 1 = All tiers
Good Food was on L, XL, + 1 on XL
    Home + Really = All tiers, Home + 1 L, XL.

Not sure if I missed any but this was how it went prior. Just seemed odd how everything suddenly became available to all tiers, so I suspected something might be happening in the near future with regards to Freesat too. I’m assuming they’re getting less money off Virgin now.

The last time Virgin shifted a few music channels to lower packages, said channels appeared on freesat lol

I guess we should just wait and see what happens I guess.

      Quote

  38. Neil Says:

I never realised VM had timeshift versions of channels in different packages. What package is Dave and Dave Ja Vu in, presumably the lowest? Most UKTV services appear to be in the Entertainment package on Sky, just three I think that are in Entertainment Extra.

I still think though that VM might be taking this hit on subs revenue to add a sweetener to their customers. Time will tell! Are all the Box TV channels now in the lowest package too?

It will be on all platforms, as per Channel 4’s 4seven (similar themed channel) so it’s assumed yes. Not sure when it launches, probably November as that is when the ex ESPN DTT capacity contracts expire for TopUpTV so assumed Channel 5 can regain the DTT bandwidth and launch on all platforms.
