It’s only January, and another channel has left Freesat.
(altough we did receive a time shift channel of an existing channel)

Call that a channel. It was a barrow. Channels come and go. Times are hard. Entire shop chains are closing down.

The C5 region changes took place for Regions 1,3.4 and 5 last week, has Region 2 now also changed?
Speedauction TV may be winding up which could be why they’ve left the platform? No great loss for me though.

At the risk of appearing dim. I am, of course, aware of the ITV and BBC regions; but what are Channel 5 regions and how do these correspond to postcodes?
KeithQuote
January 17th, 2012 at 11:09 pm
Keith: the main broadcasters all transmit multiple region variants for targeting advertisers. C4 have six, C5 have five and ITV have numerous regions identifiable by name (Meridian, Central etc). For a long time and due to spotbeam limitations bandwidth-wise, C5 have transmitted a single region (R2 – Midlands and South) to all of the UK for Freesat, only now all their services are on Astra 1N have they gone free to air and as such Freesat users receive the correct corresponding region for ads etc depending on their location determined by postcode.
NeilQuote
January 17th, 2012 at 11:56 pm
Neil: Ah! Very interesting. Thanks very much for that; and for going to the effort to provide such a clear and detailed explanation.
I really hadn’t considered that. I had always assumed that only ITV had regional advert variations, all other channels carrying the same national adverts. Out of curiosity; do you know if C4 and C5 have always transmitted regional adverts on Freeview, or even on analogue based upon transmitter location? I can’t say I’ve ever noticed any specifically regional ads on any channel other than ITV – but I can’t claim to have paid any particular attention.

The +1 channels for 3,4,5 were not properly regionalised. The HD versions of 3,4 are similar. Some do get the right region some don’t.

i’m pretty technically challenged so could someone explain why I have now lost channel 5? I would have thought if channel 5 were regionalised I would stll get it?

If you do a scan you will get it 5 back
steve 1Quote
January 18th, 2012 at 10:28 am
No worries Keith. Yep, C4 and C5 have always had regional variations for advertising on all platforms. Analogue-wise each main station gets the relevant ‘region’ for the area although obviously in the Analogue terrestrial world that is now being slowly wound up.
As James correctly says in post 13, the +1′s of ITV are not fully regionalised with only six ‘macro’ regions, C4+1 is fully replicated with the linear C4 and C5+1 is a single national service (at present). Likewise HD versions of ITV and C4 aren’t fully regionalised. C4 use the London region for the whole of the UK, ITV currently have two ITV1HD’s FTA on Freesat (London for the South, Granada for the North).

We seem to have logged on to a different satellite DM ? and numbers start at 5000!!! Really can’t understand all this at all.

Don’t buy a new box. Try to add a TP on your existing box: 10964 H 22000 Check the following link and you will find TP 57 channel list: http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html
You will get more than Channel five back!

Press TV won’t ever be joining the platform, they’ve just had their licence revoked today, now completely off-air at 28.2/28.5E. Apparently the official line is that they failed to pay the Ofcom £100k fine and abiding by their licence conditions, George Galloway will be disappointed!
NeilQuote

Steve: I added the TP as I described and I now have Channel 5, 5USA, 5* and so on. This on a simple “Skyline” HDSR 400 box. Just check the channel list on the link I provided, and for tp 57.

Tried rescanning this evening – still giving the old frequency for Channel 5. We have a Fortec Star box and I find the instructions incomprehensible. Can someone give me a complete novice guide in how we get Channel 5 back?
I suspect what we need to is “Try to add a TP on your existing box: 10964 H 22000 ” but I haven’t a clue how. to do this.

Freesat novice: I don’t know the Fortec Box, but in the menu, you should have an option to add a TP? Try to find in the menu options something like Installation, Manual Scan,… Then just add the values as I mentioned previously: TP/Frequency: 10964 Polarization: H Symbol rate: 22000. Best of luck
Liz_jesQuote
January 27th, 2012 at 8:48 pm
Thanks for your help – managed to add the TP – didn’t seem to work at first. Then switched off and unplugged everything and at the second attempt it worked (once we’d remembered how to get the TV looking at freesat rather than the builtin Freeview which we can’t receive here).
So I;m going back to the World’s greatest truckers which is the only thing I watch on Channel 5.
Help much appreciated.
