What? Why? Are these being replaced by something equivalent, or just being killed off?

Music channels are one of the few differentiators for Freesat over Freeview, what’s the thinking here?

To be honest I’m not that bothered that’s probably why they left if no one watches but hopefully FREESAT will add 3 new channels ….

I watched Kerrang. Watched Scuzz when that was the rock channel before Kerrang.

The station idents were annoying as hell and it played much the same 50 songs on rotation irrespective of what the theme of the particular “top 40…” was meant to be about. But it was rock music and it was worth it.

    Now, no more.

@1. It’s not Freesat’s thought process that should be questioned, they have no input into which channels choose to be included on their EPG. The broadcasters have no stake in the platform, so presumably they feel that the £30k/channel/year (if memory serves) EPG fee is better used elsewhere.

No great loss, Can’t understand a word they are saying, sounds all the same to me. Just thrashing of guitars, shouting and shaking out the dandruff. Now only if Planetrock had a tv channel and bring it to Freesat.

Now that would be awesome. On non Freesat Propeller channel was very good for new and up and coming bands, but it’s c**p now.

Well that’s another 3 channels gone none the less. All Freesat seems to be gaining is the occasional +1 channel…

  7. Neil Says:

A loss of channels from Freesat can often be a precursor to them being removed from DSAT altogether so wonder, after these removals, whether Bauer plan on finally canning off the Kerrang brand which has been in decline for a while. Bauer may be about to rationalise their output down to the core brands of Kiss, Magic and The Box (which historically was one of their, or EMAP’s as was, first TV music brands). One assumes that if contracts have been renewed then the remaining three services are to stay.

It has to be said that all these music channels must be in strong competition for one another and the market must be somewhat saturated. I did think it wouldn’t be long before a few of them were axed. Sad though for rock fans to see the loss of Scuzz and now Kerrang as these were different to the others.

Considering Freesat was originally for people that were unable to receive Freeview due to terrain, then any other channels above and beyond what were terrestrial channels, please be thankful.

I would like to think Freesat has moved on considerably since and is now a viable competitor as well as alternative to Freeview, and even $ky following further subscription increases… Anyhow losing channels is never a good thing as I’m sure you agree, and one has to hope that others do not follow suit…

Still easily watchable in non Freesat mode if you have a box like the Manhattan Plaza. Heat is on 11222H SR27500, Kerrang and Smash Hits on 12480V SR27500. You can even store them as favourites.

Are the Humax boxes any good for storing non freesat mode channels as favourites or being easy to find? Currently contemplating which one, if any is worth getting…

Spike launches 15th April on 141, the ex BET+1 slot. Not sure if VIVA will stay on 146 as will be Predominantly music based.

Dave, might I remind you you were banned once before for asking the same question over and over again! Freesat haven’t deleted these channels through choice; the broadcaster decided not to renew the license with Freesat. You need to ask the broadcaster.

It’s not just the BBC. All the main channels are doing it. I’m so fed up with TV at the moment I’m considering dumping the dish & aerial and signing up for Netflix. I have a good fast broadband speed and watch a lot of online stuff and get no buffering or other problems, fingers crossed.

Rather than paying £145.00 license fee for period drama’s, reality and stupid game /quize shows and so on. Pay £80.00 year for Netflix choose and watch what interest me and not what broadcaster think I should be viewing.

I know online TV viewing & broadband speeds is not reliable every where in UK due to the some poor broadband networks that are lagging behind our European counter parts.

I live in Cornwall where down here BT & Co are always bragging about superfast, but it will cost you, I think the cheapest is about £30 to £35 a month and thats just for the broadband. And it’s only the big money business companies & people who can jump on the band wagon.

I’m with TalkTalk, though they don’t have superfast in my area a the moment but will be available at the end of the year, they have quoted me and much cheaper than BT for the same speeds including phone.

It pays to wait some times.

Folks, the whole world of TV is being dumbed down, it’s an across the board thing. Since the launch of ITV Be I’ve noticed ITV have dumbed down Saturday mornings exponentially as in a nutshell having more channels, but the same programming means more is shared across the sister channels of the same broadcaster.

ITV have decided to fill weekend mornings with repeats of Jeremy Kyle which I do have an issue with, particularly when school-age children are likely to be watching.

    Hi neil
Do you know if freesat are still pursuing NETFLIX ? I’ve got it on chromecast just ideally all in 1 unit one day :-)

I work all day every Saturday so won’t miss Jeremy Kyle Saturday lol.

We believe there’s been discussions but nothing as of yet. Netflix would be a great addition to freetime, I’m amazed it’s not yet happened but there’s obviously commercial reasons why not.

There’s actually lot of good content amongst the rubbish. Sure, the primetime stuff is going to have to appeal to the masses and daytime stuff… well… but just take a look at the vast amount of content on the iPlayer – the Showcase editorial recs are actually pretty good for highlighting some of the better things on catchup and broadcast. Nobody is forcing you to watch any of it but there’s a lot of quality content available.

  33. Chris S. Says:

I think there’s more than enough quality content on Freesat, my PVR is filling up and it’s a struggle to keep up! I’m still holding out some hope for a network PVR as the next innovation…. Apparently Humax have already got it all sorted on mainland Europe. The iCord PVR (which is also a SAT>IP recevier and Server) together with the smalle media-stremaer client boxes that behave like any other connected streamer device (including DLNA renderer and also stanadlone SatIP clients) but can also connect to the iCord server for full PVR functionality. Exactly what I’ve neen looking for for years! I emailed Freesat asking whether they had any plans with their manfacuters to release such as device, and got a standard reply that didn’t convince me that anyone actually read my question, saying something like “Thank you for your suggestion which will be passed onto our developers”.

      Quote

  34. Chris S. Says:

PS. Of course that reply either means “No, we are not going to release such a product but want to give you the impression that we’re listening” or “We are possibly looking into this, maybe even got something in the pipeline for imminent release, but we are not going to give any hint at all until our PR machine wants to release the info”. It’s pushing me down the NAS/Sat>IP/DVBLink Server route and abandoning Freesat-branded products…

Viacom must be shelling out a few quid in promotion to use other channels for Spike ads. Spike will show some repeat C5 output but will also have its own original material, like Breaking Bad.

    Dear Dave,

Thank you for your email regarding All 4.

Unfortunately, on demand content on All 4 is not currently available through Chromecast. The reason for this is that we have to acquire specific rights to include our content on this or any other platform, and they are not available for Chromecast at this time. However, we can assure you that we are constantly reviewing our options regarding which devices to be on and aim to provide the best possible experience for viewers using our Apps.

Thank you for taking the time to contact All 4.

Frankly moving BBC1 HD from 108 to 101 would be a better investment of time and money (cue RichardC telling me how this is achievable through favourites on his marvellous hardware)

Spike TV is coming soon and is carrying shows such as Sons of Anarchy judging from it’s adverts. The Official description taken from the Freesat website is “Exclusive shows from the UK and US, box office dramas, big budget movies and adrenaline fuelled sports.” It looks like quite a good channel if they keep the broadcasting quality high.

Certainly more worthy than three music channels playing almost identical music! Spike sounds like a more worthy addition and Viacom should be rewarded for bringing this FTA to us and not behind the dreaded Sky paywall. I’m optimistic that, once Viacom can, they’ll get C5 HD FTA.

If the broadcast quality is good, I’ll be all over Spike from the sounds of it as I like Sons, Movies and Extreme Sports.

It will depend on picture quality for me though as I won’t watch channels such as Movies for Men because of the quality irrespective of what they’re showing.

If the quality is good, then I predict a popular channel provided enough people know about it.

      Quote

  48. Neil Says:

PQ should be identical to the any of the Channel 5 services currently broadcast, sadly not the absolute greatest you’ll see but comparable to them and much better quality than some of the lower bitrate FTA services, certainly better than it’s DTT simulcast! It launches on the 15th and being of a “blokey” type male format will hopefully compensate to a degree for all those who keep winging on about not having Dave on the platform!

As VIVA from this point will be non-stop music, and DSAT exclusive, then I wonder will Freesat also move it from 146 in to the music section as will no longer fit the entertainment genre criteria?

Scotland as it happens but I’m aware that most if not all BBC1 regions show Holby City not River City.
    From a516digital.com
“[The] Government is aware that there are some services, such as BBC1, which are not perfect simulcasts in SD and HD as they offer local news and local TV. If there is no feasible technological solution for accessing these channels or programmes in HD and SD from the same slot by the consumer an alternative solution is that Ofcom has the discretion to determine what appropriate prominence is in this case.”
