  1. Sorry if I’m being an idiot, but what does Freesat actually do with the money they get from channels paying to be on the epg? I presume they aren’t out to make a profit.

  2. The last few updates all seem to have been shopping channels. Are we going to get anymore entertainment channels or anything from other genre? Not everybody wants this sort of channel. When are freesat going to get their act together and put some decent channels on?

  3. They can’t force channels on; it’s up to the broadcaster to want to put them on Freesat; but what channels are available that should be added that haven’t been already and aren’t stuck in an encryption service or struggling for ‘in-the-clear’ slots on 2D?

  4. If these channels have the money and the “want” to be on Freesat then great, they’re feeding and supporting our medium of choice. Sure it would be great for more entertainment channels to join, but on the face of it, if I don’t turn the PVR from one day to the next at least I’m not wasting money on a subscription.

  5. Stop whinging freesat is not supposed to be a premium channel provider. And those premium channels on sky are just a waiste of money anyway like GOLD for example repeating the same things over and over. I certainly know I won’t be subcribing to sky because it’s a rip-off

  6. @Llewellyn

Nicely put, my sentiments exactly. I dont think we are going to see any new “premium” channels in the near future. I think this may be it for a while. If you want premium channels then go spend the money elsewhere, sky and virgin will take it off you. This platform has to rely on the unencrypted channels subscribing to the EPG. Its not a lot of money to put into the freesat coffers and has to pay for someone to sit there and type the programme guide in, no doubt some money for $ky to allow the EPG to flow through their systems etc.

I am sure freesat are actively working on bringing some of the bigger names in but have a number of hurdles such as licensing of programmes to UK only (how do you ensure it isnt transmitted to europe, Freesat havent created this problem) ITV-HD have been very creative with their “encryption” mechanism to keep it uk only, although it would be great to have a permanent channel, how do you keep it UK only for copyright/licensing requirements when Sky pretty much have a monopoly on the satellites restricted to UK? On top of this many channels are stuck with Sky until renewal of contracts etc, its only as the number of freesat users climbs that this will become a viable playform to drop sky.

Dont expect miracles guys….. build it and they will come……

  7. @Oscar Key
Freesat have to pay for the narrow beam channels it has on Astra 2D. That means paying the satellite operator and paying the uplink provider. Also they to pay to get the channels from the origin source to the uplink provider.

  8. There will never be any so called ‘Preminum’ channels on Freesat. Get over it.
You pay a premium to watch them thats why they are called premium channels. No one is forcing anyone to get Freesat. You know what channels you get before you buy a box so any channels added after that are a bonus.

  9. Just delete them, you are not forced to watch them. Thats the best thing about Freesat, you don’t have to watch the bloody things, when that little re-tune box comes up, select NO and press the OK button SIMPLES!!!! the bugger is gone YIPEEEEEE. Thats all folks.

  10. AT THE END OF THE DAY FREESAT IS A GOOD BIT OF KIT.I GUESS LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE BE NICE TO GET SOME MORE HD CHANNELS AND LESS SHOPPING CHANNELS BUT I RECON THAT FUNDS FREESAT.
AND AT LEAST ITS UPSCALING SO WONT GO OUT OF DATE UNLESS YOU UPGRADE TO PVR.BUT THATS A BIG LAYOUT JUST TO RECORD AND WITH THE ONSET OF IPLAYER AND ITV PLAYER YOU MIGHT NOT NEED ONE BUT YOU WILL NEED BROADBAND TO ACCESS.SO IN ALL GIVE US SOME DECENT CHANNELS DONT BOMBARD US WITH RELIGION AND SHOPPING JUST TO BUMP UP CHANNEL NUMBERS.i THINK FREESAT IS AND WILL CONTINUE TO GET BETTER

  11. You are better sticking with freeview if you want a greater selection of channels. I just bought a Pansonic freesat blue ray recorder & was most disapointed with the selection of channels compared to freeview.
Silly me I should have checked first, still it is nice to be able to record in I HD to disc.

  12. @Roy King

Freeview doesn’t have a “greater selection of channels” than Freesat; it’s just that Freeview has more of the popular channels including Dave, Gold, Sky Sports News etc. Do bare in mind that the original proposal of Freesat was to offer HD free of charge, and give digital tv access to those not fortunate enough to be able to pick up Freeview terrestrial signals.

  13. The problem I have with paying a monthly subscription is that I feel like I’m wasting my money when not watching.
Thats why I went for Freesat and an Apple TV unit. The movie selection is great (especially if you get a US iTunes account) and I even buy episodes of LOST (in HD) a few days before they are broadcast on SKY. Its a great set-up If we feel like watching a new release movie we just rent it on the ATV (in HD if we think its worth it) 🙂

  14. There is nothing much on Dave, Gold etc just lots of old shows I am sick of seeing so no loss there.
Why all this lusting after more channels they just spread the content thinner. We need more good content on the channels we already get not more channels.
I have no intention of paying anyone for content beyond paying the licence fee so no to pod/ tunes /tv etc.
500 channels and nothing to watch is very very true.

  15. I am one of those strange people who likes repeats. Sometimes it is because I missed the program when it was first on or I just find the program fun to watch. I would rather watch a repeat of a good drama series from the 1970’s than watch rubbish like Big Brother or X Factor.
